Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

my insane dream free agent signings

This is my dream, i know we only have about 30 million to spend, so i am definitely dreaming, but this is my fantasy angel offseason.

1. Sign Jason Schmidt -
This guy is going to be 33 on opening day, he had a decent year last year, posting 11-9 record, 3.59 ERA, and 180 K's in 213 innings, while issuing 80 walks. Having a Lackey-Schmidt-Santana-Escobar-Colon rotation would be a great thing. (Saunders should be dealt)

2. Barry Bonds -
The guy will hit. And with him protecting Vlad, vlad's batting average will destroy. I'm sick of people thinking Vlad needs to be full time DH already, he played 156 games last year and hit .329 so stop being so scared. It's not like he's made of glass...

3. Package Rivera and Saunders for Carl Crawford, stick him in CF.

If we made these acqusitions, we'd still be left with a hole at third, but i don't want to see McPherson leave and hit another walk off home run against Kansas City, if he's traded it'll probably be in the LCS...

1b and 3b are still left empty in my opinon, i am dumbstruck.

Guerrero "breaking"
isn't so much the concern, as his total ineptitude at playing the position is.  His ability to get injured out there is part of the problem, his inability to catch is a larger part.

Have you heard
of Jered Weaver???

insane as in BELLVUE
  1. A lot of other teams will value Schmidt much more than us, and when was the last time an NL to AL pitcher turned out OK?
  2. I'm all for getting Barry, as long as we have a clause that says if he goes to jail, we don't have to pay him. LH power plus walks is what we are most deficient in.
  3. I wouldn't mind getting CC, but why not just put him in LF?  Just because someone plays LF well, they might do OK in CF, but not likely to be good.

How about
Josh Becke...wait, no.  Um...Randy Johns...no, that's no good.  Hmmm...Guillermo Mot...nope.  Uh...uh...Kevin Bro...no, that's crap.  Geez...uh...oh, I know!  Kent Bottenfield!  There, take that!

well,
Beckett and Johnson both won more games than the biggest angels winner, they didn't have great fantasy years, but I'll take wins for my team. . .so to that you can add Kevin Millwood and  Vicente Padilla. . . and Schilling has pitched fine in the A.L.

WINS
Escobar would have been a 20 game winner in '06 with those offenses.

Wins - a useless statistic on their own.
Every team wins fifty, and every team loses fifty--it's what you do with the rest that counts.

by cardinalwraith on Nov 1, 2006 11:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

hmmm
Wins are a good statistic for a career, as run support mostly evens out, and they adjust for park and league environment.

But anyway my point is that every pitcher that goes from NL to AL seems to add at least a run to their ERA.  So if they were great in the NL, they might be passable in the AL.

by elricsi on Nov 1, 2006 12:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wins?
Who cares?  Their ERAs and home runs allowed shot through the roof. Wins?  How about the 5.01ERA that on any other team would have you go about 8-14?  Everyone can look like a winner with the right offense.

And I have a laminated list of 5 chicks I want to bang, but I'm not getting that either.

sorry
i forgot about dream weaver, i'd try to fish to get something for colon because he'll probably top out at 92 next year.

I'd put crawford in CF because anderson would be occupying LF because i'd have bonds at DH. I'd sell my soul for 14 million to get barry bonds for one year while some younger players develop for 2008.

i disagree
saunders is gonna be nothing more than another washburn, although he wash was decent, he also had the luxury of a ton of run support, and you saw how that worked for him in seattle. Rivera- he had a great year today but he's reaching 30 and yeah, he grounds into plenty of double plays, no matter how much it's been contested on here, he does it, it's ugly.

i disagree with your disagreement
Crawford is fine, but he's not worth Juan Rivera + anything. He's young, this is true, but Rivera has a bit more power than he does. His other tool, speed, is something we have quite a bit of in Figgy and Willits.

Not to say that Crawford is bad, he would be a nice addition, but there's no need to break the bank to trade for him.

Every team wins fifty, and every team loses fifty--it's what you do with the rest that counts.

You're nuts
If you won't trade Rivera and "anybody" for a 4 tool player who is only 25 years old and won't turn 26 until late next season.

Crawford's OPS progression has been thus: +10, +90, +19, + 30. His HR's: 5, 11, 15, 18. On top of that he averages 55 stolen bases a year. This guy would be a perennial All-Star on a winning team and is 2 years away from BEGINNING his prime. His ceiling is WAY higher than Johnny Rivers. He;s an elite player. Juan Rivera is a good average, above average power guy with a great arm, but not a game changer like Crawford.

He's also signed cheap for another 2 years. Now is the time to get him and lock him up multi-year until he's 30/31.

His superior range in LF might make a Soriano in CF viable as well. At the very least he would make Figgy expendable. Maybe we could package him with Mathis and Saunders for Wells. Then we'd have an ELITE defensive AND offensive outfield.

Dumb as a box of hair
  1. We have five legitimate starters, forming probably the best rotation in the American League. Plus Bartolo Colon. And we don't have to spend anything at all to get it. Why the hell do you need to enter a bidding war for a starter's decline phase?
  2. Your three players at the corner outfield spots & DH include a guy in his 40s, another with degenerative arthritis, and a third with balky knees. None of them plays good defense anymore. The Angels, if you recall, had some trouble with the ol' D last year. Also, they have a flyball staff.
  3. Rocco Baldelli has been hurt most of the last two seasons, and still Carl Crawford played only 8 games in CF (53 total for his career). If he was a viable center fielder, don'tcha suppose they woulda tried that out already?
  4. You just managed to spend $30 million without fixing the problem at 3B, while making the outfield defense worse. Congratulations!

i like juan rivera
if he gets full-time ABs, i think he will mash. no science, just a hunch. we need some power, for sure, but i think rivera will be surprisingly badass, too.

I don't like him.
He reminds me too much of the cockiness of Edmonds.

Edmonds.
Yeah, maybe a little cocky, but it's not likes he's been a malcontent.

And yes, we got Kennedy who helped us win the world series, but Edmonds was definitely a fan fav and continually productive.

Erstad, lead us to the promised land.

Soriano
Might be able to play well in center.  He's got the skills.

But I sure wouldn't bet 15+ million per year that he can play there.
