ESPN: Red Sox trying to sign J.D. Drew, trade Manny

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2677627

And, for some reason, the Angels are not expected to make a run at him (per ESPN).

DO IT, STONEY!  This would make up for the GMJ signing in my eyes.

How About ...
Trade Juan Rivera and Orlando Cabrera for Manny Ramirez.

by Rev Halofan on Nov 27, 2006 7:26 PM PST reply actions

I am in
GMJ step number one in a plan for continued dominance, or step number one in a plan for severe weight loss through explosive vomiting?

by hauldog on Nov 27, 2006 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

Nah
It makes too much sense; therefore, it won't happen.

Wouldn't Boston demand some pitching, though?  The suggested deals with the Dodgers & Padres both involved pitching.

Figures, of course.  Watch Boston accept a package of crap, further infuriating Angels fans.

Isn't that how it is supposed to work?
GMJ step number one in a plan for continued dominance, or step number one in a plan for severe weight loss through explosive vomiting?

by hauldog on Nov 27, 2006 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

I FRIGGING DEMAND MANNY
will he clog up LF? Not if you play Juan Rivera.  Can't play in the outfield today Garrett?  Sit on the bench!

Is he insane?  probably.  does he clash with Stoneman and Scioscia's clubhouse?  probably, but not anything like Guillen.

I'd like to see this thread turn into a rigorous debate about who YOU would trade for Manny.....

My vote goes for Shields and Aybar.  In my estimation, Boston will want some pitching.  They are stocked with starters and have always coveted Shields.  Our signing of Spier (sp?) checks the loss of Scot.  We all know Boston loves OC, but so does Manny, and if he's here, there would be some good chemistry in the clubhouse.

by atomburn on Nov 27, 2006 10:51 PM PST reply actions

Rivera and Adenhart
That might get it done.  I doubt that they value OC too much.

This is a perfect way to keep my disgust growing.
No mention of the Angels being in the discussions.

You just know that we're going to hear soon about how the Red Sox accepted some miserable combination of minor leaguers and perhaps one every day player for ManRam.

Meanwhile, we won't be anywhere near the discussions, because Boston will demand a little more from us, and, well, we won't trade pitching, in the words of Stoneman it "would just hurt too much".

If he goes to the Dodgers for Billingsly, and/or Loney, I will be heartsick.

Heartsick.

I've pretty much given up the ghost at this point. I argued earlier this summer that we should be pursuing this guy with everything we've got. He's one of the greatest run producers of his generation.

But now, I'm sure we'll sit around and watch while others, real Stone Men, take action. Fuck it.

Let the "they can have him, he sucks" flaming begin.

by goodvibe61 on Nov 27, 2006 11:28 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, if we don't get him
we're screwed.  We probably shouldn't even bother playing the season.  I mean, we won't even have a CHANCE.  Napoli, Kendrick, Weaver, Saunders, Santana and Morales can only get worse.  McPherson and Kotchman are probably going to be walking diseases forever - there's no possibility that they'll EVER be healthy.  Vlad's going to collapse any day now, I can feel it.  Rivera's .300 batting average?  A complete mirage.  Lackey and Escobar are LUCKY that so many batters swing and miss at their pitches so much.  Frankie and Shields are WAY overrated.  No hope...absolutely no hope for us...and noboby in the minors coming up to help, either...we should all root for another team that has a much better chance at winning...

Dude.....
Have you lost you're pacifier or what? What is your deal???? You've been nuthin but BADvibes61 since september, I understand your frustration but stoneman HAS taken action and thats more than I can say for a lot of teams. I'm not saying they've been the most stellar moves but you're acting like nothing has been done to improve this team when its actually has. For me GMJ+Shields and Magic= better than Fuckin ManRam/Jones/or Wells-Magic and or Shields. Do you honestly believe we will see a duplicate of last seasons first half?? I think not and this division is going to be weaker than last season. I just don't get you're negativity. I for one am honestly excited about the upcoming 07' season and yes even without another move. Good call johnnyangel.

Prediction
Manny's OPS outside Fenway will be within 50 points of Rivera.  Not worth the extra money and taleny IMO.

Word.
Keep Johnny Rivers.

Pull the Trigger
The AL West will be weak in 2007...but wasn't the divison supposed to be weak enough in 2006 to win without making any moves?  Trade for ManRam, dang it!

by Crapper John MD on Nov 28, 2006 7:42 AM PST reply actions

If I remember correctly...
...the Halos weren't seriously in the discussions for Vlad either until the last minute, while it appeared that the Dodgers and Mets were trying to put a deal together for him.

I've learned to not underestimate Moreno when it comes to giving the OK to pull the trigger on a big FA acquisition, especially if he can punk the Dodgers in the process.

by Ajax on Nov 28, 2006 10:39 AM PST reply actions

Agreed
I agree Ajax, I have a feeling there may be something out there brewing similar to the Vlad deal.  However, I am concerned with Stoneman's comments and lack of interest in making a trade in the past, we may be stuck with what we got for another year.

by Crapper John MD on Nov 28, 2006 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

knee jerk reaction
Manny was out almost all of Sep with bad knees.  Neither his knees or his attitude will improve in the future, rather they will both head south.  I would rather have a healthy GA and Rivera platooning between LF and DH.

by mdangel on Nov 28, 2006 3:20 PM PST reply actions

No offense to you personally...
I just couldn't respectfully disagree more.  Another Anderson/Rivera LF/DH platoon over Manuel Aristides Ramirez?  I thought the 2005 offense was sad, the 2006 was quite painful, and now the end of the "big off-season moves" for 2007 is Matthews Jr.?

Trade for Manny doesn't work
Personally, I have been dying for us to trade for Manny for a couple years now.  Why?  Because he has long been one of the game's five greatest hitters, and there is no reason to believe he won't continue as such.

The problem, obviously, is that we now have no room for him.  Vlad, GA, and Matthews cannot conceivably be part of any trade.  That only leaves Rivera, and I don't see a deal involving Rivera and others for Manny as likely.

That being said, I would still like to see us make a major move for someone like Tejada or, in the alternative, A-Rod.

I think we could benefit tremendously from a big bat at one of our corner infield spots, and I'm no longer convinced that D-Mac or Casey can be that bat.  Even though we have a very good team as is, we have not displayed enough consistency on offense the past two years to inspire confidence (at least on my part) in the current lineup.

Finally, I believe that both Shields and Figgins are (a) expendable and (b) likely to be at the height of their trade value.

For all of these reasons, I would like to see us send Figgins, Shields or Santana, and a top prospect (not named Wood) to land Tejada or A-Rod.  I think that type of package would be difficult for another team to turn down, and the benefit to us would outweigh the loss.
