Predicting Lil' Weave

So, over in the comments of this post, Rob McMillin's loyal readers staged a revolt of sorts, challenging the scareduck to back his relentless WTY pessimism with a nuts-and-bolts prediction for 2007. As of press time, he hadn't taken the plunge, but myself and Seitz and Rich have thrown ourselves out there. My predix:

15-7, 3.32 ERA, 8.12 K/9.

Well...
Predicting the W-L numbers are an exercise in futility with the offense that this team might throw out there, but the other numbers should be doable...

ERA between 3.35 and 3.80 and a K/9 between 7.75 and 8.5.

The most important stat that we should be predicting is innings pitched.  If he can throw 180+ innings I will be happy.

Mark Me Down
Assumption #1: The Halos will play significantly better defense behind WTY in '07.

Assumption #2: The Halos will put forth a moderately better offense in '07 than they did in '06.

Assumption #3: WTY will have superior arm strength and stamina in '07, versus what he had in '06.

Three fair assumptions. Now for one bold (but consistent) personal prediction: WTY is the next Cy Young pitcher from the Angels. And 2007 is the year he establishes himself as a future Cy Young contender.

2007 Results: 20-6, 2.91 ERA, 7.65 K/9.

If he puts up those numbers
in 2007, he won't be establishing himself as a "future cy young contender", he'll probably BE the cy young winner.

I really don't think
you are too far off in calling him the next cy young on the angels.  Those estimates may be a little lofty but certainly doable.

That would win the thing,

...and they will be back.
But meanwhile WTY is still a kid, and a west coaster. It will take him longer to build up enough attraction to win the CY. I mean, like, after all...did you see the CY votes from this past season?

Wins Loses problem ignored
Who had a good season in the West?  No Cy Young guys in the AL that I can think of, and Webb beat Carpenter so what is your beef?

Beat a more deserving Santana.  I am not following this.

(Whispering)
Don't tell anybody, but the Angels have had some success with pitchers increasing their workloads:

Ervin Santana threw 192 innings in 2005, far more than he ever had (154), and actually got BETTER the following year.  Verducci missed that one...but don't let that get in the way of a good story...

I hope he has a great year
but the only thing that concerns me is the 3rd time he faced Sea and Tex, 2nd vs. Oak he got hit pretty good.  Maybe he was just getting tired at the end of the year, but his last starts of the year vs. each team in our division was not pretty.

I go 17-8, 3.61, 7.2k/9

by LosAngel on Nov 30, 2006 11:00 PM PST reply actions

I hope he does well, but realism sets in
Record: 15-9
ERA: 3.70
K/9: 6.9

This is pretty good, but I'm assuming that he has a pretty good year instead of a Cy-Young-winning season.

Every team wins fifty, and every team loses fifty--it's what you do with the rest that counts.

by cardinalwraith on Nov 30, 2006 11:11 PM PST reply actions

Thanks to our offense
14-12, 3.15 ERA, 180 K - 45 BB.

He'll be a tough luck guy, like Lackey and Escobar last year, 24-25 combined despite 3.60 ERAs.

by RallyMonkey5 on Dec 1, 2006 6:08 AM PST reply actions

Tougher year in 2007
12-8, 3.95 ERA, 7.0 K/9, 170 IP

Suspect he may feel it with a full season ahead of him - I won't be surprised if he breaks down at some point.

by The Limey on Dec 1, 2006 7:57 AM PST reply actions

I was about to post my prediction...
... but you already did it.  I might up the strikeout rate a little, but I think the ERA is right on.  He's going to allow some homers.

by Dogman on Dec 1, 2006 8:33 AM PST up reply actions

ok
15-8
3.75 ERA
7.1 K/9

I think he'll be in the hunt for the Cy Young, but will fall short this year.  I think 2008 will belong to WTY.

Won't predict W/L
But I'll say 3.40 ERA, K rate around 6.8/9.  200 innings, +/-15.

by LA Seitz on Dec 1, 2006 11:23 AM PST reply actions

I predict
better offense and defense behind Weaver and the American League hitters will make some adjustments and hit him a little harder.  But in the end Weaver will prevail.

by higdog on Dec 1, 2006 3:17 PM PST reply actions

Sorry, Rob did make his predix in that thread
a run and a half over his 2006 [ERA], and a drop of two points on his K/9.
