Bye Bye Bud...
According to ESPNews, Bud Black will be the next manager of the San Diego Padres.
(Editor's Note:) Moving this over from the diaries. If you think that Black's absence will harm the Angels, I'd be interested in reading what SPECIFICALLY you see they will be most impacted...

No Surprise
Good luck, Harry. We'll miss you.
More to the point, though, the Angels' staff will miss Black's straightforward, no-nonsense approach. He always seemed able to commuicate well with the pitchers: to get and hold their attention, all the while helping to build their confidence.
While there is strong sentimental support for Troy Percival, who might very well make an excellent pitching coach some day, I hesistate to hand the ML staff over to a guy with NO official coaching experience. Why not start out as a bullpen coach or minor-league coach?
Dave Wallace is available.
Say it with me now:

The Butcher
The biggest loss associated with Black will be his calming demeanor and communication skills rather than tactical decision making.
But
Hey. Good for Bud.
There are only 3 downsides, from what I can tell: 1) we might also get somebody a lot worse, 2) we might need that rare person to shepherd WTY through the next couple of seasons and screw his head on straight and without getting him we could lose Weave to the dark side, and 3) after making the call of Washington to Texas I was hoping Black to Oakland and being 2 for 2 in my offseason transaciton predictions....

I 2nd the nomination of Ms. Whitesnake.....
Good for him.
Not sure how much effect a pitching coach really has. I guess the main thing is does the coach and the manager know to remove the pitcher when they are giving up scorching line drive outs, and not worry about lucky dink hits.
I would be curious to see if our pitchers are injured more or less often now.
Also, no way should Percy start at the ML level. If he wants to go that way, let him start in the minors. Also, why does everyone think Percy will be such a good PC? He had a very simple repetoire. I would think a finesse pitcher would make a better coach. Also, I think it is a requirement for PC to be bilingual now.
Percy

Many in the bullpen said he was able to give invaluable advice to them

He seems willing to go to the minors now and be the NEXT next pitching coach...

San Diego
Will Black's absence hurt the Angels? Well, I think Joe Maddon's absence this year did hurt the team, and I can't see how Black's absence can be a positive thing. My guess? It won't hurt anything, but the new guy will have some big shoes to fill.
