Bye Bye Bud...

According to ESPNews, Bud Black will be the next manager of the San Diego Padres.

(Editor's Note:) Moving this over from the diaries. If you think that Black's absence will harm the Angels, I'd be interested in reading what SPECIFICALLY you see they will be most impacted...

No Surprise
The writing's been on the wall for this move ever since the Padres first granted Bruce Bochy permission to interview for other jobs.  This was basically the job that Black was waiting for.  Recall that he rejected the chance to interview for other managerial positions (including the Dodgers, IIRC) on the ground that they were too far from his San Diego County home.

Good luck, Harry.  We'll miss you.

More to the point, though, the Angels' staff will miss Black's straightforward, no-nonsense approach.  He always seemed able to commuicate well with the pitchers: to get and hold their attention, all the while helping to build their confidence.

While there is strong sentimental support for Troy Percival, who might very well make an excellent pitching coach some day, I hesistate to hand the ML staff over to a guy with NO official coaching experience.  Why not start out as a bullpen coach or minor-league coach?

Dave Wallace is available.

However
Imagine he had gone to the A's and then sabotaged their team so that we won the division easily.  Sneaky Bud "Saboteur" Black.

yes, please.

The Butcher
Mike Butcher has been with most of the staff in the minors and should jump at the chance to leave Tampa and rejoin the Halos.  If that doesn't work out I could see the Charles Nagby being promoted to the club much like Dino Ebel last season.

The biggest loss associated with Black will be his calming demeanor and communication skills rather than tactical decision making.

But
Teams almost never allow sideways transfers unless there's an ulterior motive.  In Bochy's case, it was because he wasn't going to get re-upped at the end of his deal in 2007.  I don't see a similar situation pertaining to the Devil Rays.
Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.

Hey. Good for Bud.
I, for one, am happy for the guy. Even the best pitching coaches need to get recycled eventually, when the pitchers have heard it all and stop responding. Bud gets a promotion, to a club that can contend (in the weak NL West), and is close to home. And we get a shot at some new blood on our coaching staff that might make some headway with middle relief.

There are only 3 downsides, from what I can tell: 1) we might also get somebody a lot worse, 2) we might need that rare person to shepherd WTY through the next couple of seasons and screw his head on straight and without getting him we could lose Weave to the dark side, and 3) after making the call of Washington to Texas I was hoping Black to Oakland and being 2 for 2 in my offseason transaciton predictions....

Just
let the big Buddha manage everything. Wouldn't you guys like to see Scioscia walk to the mound more than he does now?

I 2nd the nomination of Ms. Whitesnake.....
Just imagine.......she takes the mound to yank a starter, then WHAP!! -- a stiletto to the noggin.

Josh Barfield
just got traded to the Indians...........

Barfield
Unfortunately for Padres fans, they can only briefly exhale in relief that Dusty Baker was not hired as the new manager... since they are all broken hearted over the Barfield trade.

Good for him.
You do your job well enough you eventually move up.  I'm glad he is in the other league.

Not sure how much effect a pitching coach really has.  I guess the main thing is does the coach and the manager know to remove the pitcher when they are giving up scorching line drive outs, and not worry about lucky dink hits.

I would be curious to see if our pitchers are injured more or less often now.

Also, no way should Percy start at the ML level.  If he wants to go that way, let him start in the minors.  Also, why does everyone think Percy will be such a good PC?  He had a very simple repetoire.  I would think a finesse pitcher would make a better coach.  Also, I think it is a requirement for PC to be bilingual now.

Percy
Great leadership clubhouse guy
(check)

Many in the bullpen said he was able to give invaluable advice to them
(check)

He seems willing to go to the minors now and be the NEXT next pitching coach...

San Diego
was ALWAYS the choice for Black, since he lives there.  I wish him well.  I'd love to see Percy come in as pitching coach, but I'm guessing they'll want him to get some seasoning for a few years before throwing him into the big leagues all the way.

Will Black's absence hurt the Angels?  Well, I think Joe Maddon's absence this year did hurt the team, and I can't see how Black's absence can be a positive thing.  My guess?  It won't hurt anything, but the new guy will have some big shoes to fill.

I think
the Pads are smarter than that.  It has been heavily rumored that Marcus Giles was their target to play 3B or now 2B with Scott Linebrink moving to the Braves.

Congrats to Buddy
I'm happy for him. He's got manager written all over him, if you ask me.

Now bring in Percy.

congrats to bud black for getting the job he wanted

yep, me too
and i'd add Nagy and Marcel L., i saw Marcel as the Olympic coach in Arizona last year - he looks the same as he always did.

Nagy has had a year with the organization.

What about the bullpen coach?
I don't think Mercado was ever a pitcher but he was a catcher for 12 major league seasons.  This would open up the bullpen coaching position for Percy, or Soliz.
