OBLIGITORY INTRO TEXT FOR THE LAME SYSTEM TO ACCEPT THIS POST.

Star-divide

Down, but still not out, Anaheim tries to make their lawyers earn their keep with yet another legal maneuver.

Could this be the last gasp of the legal grievance?

so there is absolutely no chance of the Angels and Anaheim reconciling.

Arte was moving the team already...
Trial or not, suit or not, nasty words or not, he's been planning on moving the team since he bought it. In fact, I'm wondering why he didn't buy the Dodgers. I guess the Angels were cheaper and more readily available.

I'm glad we didn't get McBankrupt... who by the way WILL move the Dodgers sooner than you can say "Bostonian and Arizonan Billionaires relocating teams for profit".

Where is he planning to move the team to?

No specifics...
I talked to a developer who said they were looking at several sites... one that I do remember is Santa Fe Springs... which would be preferable to north hollywood.

But, he was doin' this before the name was even changed or the lawsuit. This was in the summer of 2004. It's very shrewd because now he seems to be the wounded victim.

I was stoked to see that you actually have a post that was limited to two sentences.

What about Brea? the 57, the 91, and Imperial Hwy.

My dispensations...
determine their own length: like little beautiful children finding their way in the world, becoming whatever they are capable of. Good to see that you're moving beyond grunts and hand gestures :-D

But seriously, Brea would be good. But Arte's def. gonna cross that county line for legitimacy. Providing street cred. for the hooligans that he hopes to enlist.

More Legal
Here's an interesting passage from O.C. Register writer Frank Mickadeit's Tuesday column:

"The city of Anaheim is already on the hook for more than $2 million in legal fees for the Angels lawsuit. (In theory, it also could get socked with Arte Moreno's costs, but that's rare in a case in which there's no attorneys' fees clause in the contract.) There will be political pressure to drop the matter and not appeal the verdict.

"The council members who sat there day after day know a few things the average city resident or pundit doesn't: the strength of the city's case, that one of the three appellate judges has already ruled for the city, and that the cost of an appeal would be a mere fraction of what the trial cost. When you weigh the risk-reward of throwing a few more bucks at a chance to win $100 million or more (and get the name back!), you could see why the council would go in that direction.

"Not to mention that by appealing the decision, the city somewhat ties Moreno's hands for at least another 18 months. He'd be foolish to go whole hog on the further Los Angelization of the Angels while there was a chance he could still lose. And, I almost forgot, there's still a chance Judge Peter Polos could essentially disagree with Thursday's verdict and on March 2 grant an injunction requiring Moreno to restore the Anaheim Angels name - a long shot, but one that would make him a judicial hero of Sirica-like proportions locally."

In the first paragraph above, Mickadeit seems to be suggesting that Arte is less likely to recover attorneys' fees than alot of us have assumed because there is no provision for such recovery in the original lease agreement.

Moving the team
He has a loyal fan base around Anaheim, if he thinks  that moving the team to LA he is going to get the same attendance he is crazy. I am very loyal, but if he thinks I am going to buy season tickets and drive my ass up to LA 81 times a year, he needs to smacked upside the head and told to "smarten up"

Now if he moves 10 miles up the FWY, I will still attend the games, but no way in hell am I driving up to LA. In ten years the gas prices are probably going to be 7.98 a gallon, let alone the increased traffic

Move the team to LA and the fans will have your balls in a vice..Arturo

Definitely
he's only going to alienate the fanbase the Angels already have in his pipe-dream search for a new, larger fanbase (i.e. Angelenos who obviously already have a team).

and yes,
I realize a lot of people who post here are from LA, but the fanbase is still largely OC

Legal Update - Wed , 02/15/06
From the O.C. Register:

'The Anaheim City Council will wait until a judge rules on a request to block the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim name before deciding whether to appeal last week's jury verdict.

'Orange County Superior Court Judge Peter Polos is set to hear the city's request March 2. Polos can rule against the jury, which said the team's name did not violate the stadium lease.

'"This is not about monetary damages. This is about getting our name back," Mayor Curt Pringle said after the council discussed the matter in closed session Tuesday.

'Seven speakers addressed the council about the issue.

'One resident, Allan Davis, called for Pringle to resign. If not, Davis said, he plans to take out recall papers.'
