what I loved about Glaus...
Is before Vlad, he legitamized this offense.  He was not scared regardless of the competition.  It seemed like every time we played somewhere like in Yankee stadium, or in the playoffs, he would end up having a big hit right away as if to say "sorry boys, we're the favorites in this one."  Plus, if it was an HR he'd put his head down and run the bases.

Letting him go is understandable when you factor in his contract compared to MacPhersons.  When you factor in how much we paid Finley/Cabrera then keeping Glaus/Eckstein and moving Erstad to center in '05 seems a little more logical.  Then Glaus (admittedly he didn't want to play anything but 3rd), MacPherson, and/or Kotchman could have played 1st.

Damnit, my rambling has resulted in me being mad again.

Glaus
Although it was understandable that the organization did not resign Glaus, it was nonetheless a mistake. There had been so much hype about McPherson that a large segment of the Angels faithful were looking at him like the Second Coming. Now, D-Mac may turn out to be a legitimate major leaguer, however, it was my contention that Glaus was too big a part of this line-up and this club to simply toss him aside.

Glaus brought more to this club than simply his smooth and powerful swing, his admirable patience at the plate, or his strong throwing arm from third. More significant was the FEAR he struck in opposing pitchers and managers. For those who are bemoaning the current lack of protection for Vlad -- Troy WAS that protection. The number of walks he was drawing are a testament to the fact that he was/is a truly feared hitter. And this cannot be understated. The offense was imposing with him in the middle of the order, and now it is simply not imposing. Granted, the team now is built more on speed and moving runners (the rise of Figgy helping here) but in big games, in playoff and World Series games you need someone who can take a 96 MPH fastball and turn it around and hit it 400 feet (like Glaus did twice to Jason Schimdt in Game 1)or to Schilling in 04 ALDS.

To pat myself of the back a little bit, I was saying all this prior to Glaus' return from his shoulder injury, and actually predicted he would have a big impact on the Halos winning the Division (which he did).

I do not wish McPherson ill. I just think we need to remember that a proven commodity is one thing and a hot prospect is still a prospect until he does it over time and does it when it counts.

If Glaus was such a good idea
... why have the Snakes traded him after only the first year of his contract?  Glaus had injury trouble, and there were hints that he couldn't or wouldn't follow the required workout regimen to keep his shoulder healthy.  He was a big guy for the Angels, but there was no way he was going to be worth the money the Angels would have had to pay him.

As for McPherson, well, let's see what he can do when he's healthy.  This season really is key for him.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Glaus
I think the Snakes traded Glaus for the same reason the Angels traded him -- namely, they had a younger, cheaper alternative available.  In the case of the Angels, McPherson.  And in the case of the Snakes, Chad Tracy.

Maybe
I'm sure that factored in to it.  But why get a star like Glaus in the first place?  Of course, the counterargument is that Arizona has a new GM in place, and didn't like the last of Garagiola's moves.

Glaus in Arizona
That comment about the GM is probably more to the point. I followed the D-Backs pretty closely last year and if they had had any SEMBLANCE of a bullpen they would have won that division. And Glaus was without question their team MVP last year.

I like Glaus as much as anyone...
And I fully agree on your comment a couple of posts ago about a proven commodity (especially a young one) as opposed to a prospect.  The one disagreement I have (I watched a lot of D'Back games too last year) is that he was the clear cut MVP.  Glaus started out the year mashing, but because of injury or wearing down or whatever his 2nd half was much less impressive.  Shawn Green got hot and carried their second half and most of the players considered Counsell their MVP.  Tracy was also a manchild at the end of the year, not to mention Webb being solid all year.

Bottom line, if he was a super star or an untouchable, he wouldn't have gotten moved/let go two years in a row.  His D is below average and he should be on an AL team so he can DH when/if he's hurting.  He made more sense on the Angels than he did the D'Backs.

Yes and No
Yes, I agree that he is a better fit for an AL team where he can DH. Melvin actually did a good job of periodically resting Glaus last year. It seemed that every time Melivin gave him a day off he came back and hit a big homer the next day. Glaus is the kind of player that does benefit from a rest now and then, however, he did not miss an extended period of time with the D-Backs. It also seemed that most of his 37 HR came in huge situations (many were late inning game winners, etc.)

No, on the other players in Arizona being more valuable than Glaus. Shawn Green was ice cold for two months before he began to hit. Counsell was good, but did not approach the impact of Glaus. The one player you mentioned who was comparable was Webb, who admittedly had a fabulous first half (I know cause I had him on my Fantasy Team), however, he faded in the second half. Glaus was pretty strong throughout the year. Let's see what he does this year in Toronto. I say he hits at least 30 HR and drives in 100. Look for the Blue Jays to rock this year.

agree
with the numbers for this year.  And I hope he does.  I hope they win the AL East, but it will be tough.

Looking back
on those monster numbers posted, i realized that they were alldone in  only half the time he played because he would slump for a mnth and a half at a time when there wouldn't be anything on his bat.

We were lucky he warmed up prior to the '02 divisional playoffs - iw as at the last game of the season and he hit a grand slam and I thought HERE WE GO, HE'S GETTING HOT.

one of the sweetest swings ever
glaus' swing is a thing of absolute beauty. in angels history, only GA, Carew, and maybe Salmon come to mind (at first) when i think about the sheer artwork on display during an at-bat.

on completely different level, glaus might be the angel with the lowest IQ ever. has anyone ever heard him speak in sentences longer than 5 words? i hate to say it, but i think the Monkey might outwit him.

i'm not saying i'm a genius (the Rev kindly reminds me of that often), but baseball players aren't known for their intellectual minds--and glaus proves that.

you're a genius
maybe a misunderstood genius, but a genius nonetheless...

I'm not a big fan of his....
But I always enjoyed Edmond's at bats as well.

Public Speaking
I don't know how intelligent or unintelligent he is but I will admit that's he's not a very good public speaker. That's okay, you can get William F. Buckley to bat clean-up for you and I'll take Glaus.

by Jack Frost on Feb 21, 2006 10:02 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

OUCH!
As Bill Buckley would say, "Quite the vituperative verbiage from Jack Frost tonight..."

Hmm
Didn't he say "I'd rather be governed by 200 Troy Glaus' than by the Harvard Faculty"?

definitely agree...
about Glaus' swing - it's pretty much perfect.  with a swing like that and results to go with it, who needs an IQ?
