Spring Training Game CINCO

Official Game Thread

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Angels of Tempe, 1:05 pm

Pitching Matchups TBD

Yesterday, Darin Erstad hit a homerun and Vladimir Guerrero made a fine defensive play - a dramatic running catch. Oh and Jeff Weaver threw nothing but fastballs and changeups, so we can keep hope alive.

Will there be two highlights in today's game for the Angels? Stay tuned!

Terry Smith
mentioned that Steven Shell was scheduled to get the start for the Angels today.

WBC
Bartolo looked good for the DR today.  Velocity was low to mid 90's and he was really working the change and getting good movement from his two seemer.  He was pulled afer the second well below his pitch limit.

WBC Dominican/Venezuela
Edgardo Alfonzo just slugged a solo homer for Venezuela.

Shell
following the example that Weaver set yesterday.  I can only hope he is focusing on his fastball and location like The Weaver.

Just got here
... finally coaxed Windows Media to work on Linux. So what's the deal with the six-run inning?  Steve Shell blew up?  And what was with the comment about Figgy?

Shell Shelled
Shell gave up a three-run home run to O-Dog.

Jered gave up two runs in the 6th(?). Even Duhhh-vanon got in on the action.

Sun field
Figgy started in left and lost a ball in the sun.  That out would have helped out young Mr. Shell but really wasn't Figgy's fault.

by riktermiller on Mar 7, 2006 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, AZ sun
... is notably awful.  Everyone complains about either (a) the incredibly strong sun on clear days, or (b) the difficulty of seeing the ball in the high thin clouds that appear on all the other days.

Of course, it's just my luck that the first day I'm supposed to be at ST it's supposed to rain.  Grr.

Agreed
I was there when Benji Gil got a sun-assisted inside-the-park grand slam some years back.

When are you going to ST, scareduck?

Saturday
I refuse to leave on Friday because it's so crazy. But we'll get an early start Saturday and get there in plenty of time for a game... I hope.

Saturday
If you leave early enough (5ish a.m. from OC) then you should be fine.

by WiseAndEck on Mar 7, 2006 5:27 PM PST up reply actions

In ST at least
... that Callaspo/Bulger trade is looking pretty bad for the Angels.

by scareduck on Mar 7, 2006 2:48 PM PST reply actions

and with that logic
based on ST performance, it looks like Figgins should never play outfield, Salmon should be a starter, and Erstad should hit 40 HRs this year.

i'm not saying the trade was good, but at least wait until Opening Day to start writing people off! geez louise! :)

(and apparently i couldn't wait until OD to start bickering! haha)

Talk about overreacting
I didn't say he was a bust, only that he wasn't looking good in ST.  Jeez.

haha
i think you've substituted "knee-jerk reaction" with "critical thinking" here. what kind of far-reaching conclusions can we reach from watching the first 5 spring training games?

speaking of the Least Panther among us, it will be interesting to see who will be the first among us to declare the angels' season over. i predict someone here (and an Angel fan, no less) will do it by May 6.

we've got enough trolls around here trying to tell us the Angels suck, so there's no use in buying into it until there's actually any validity there.

the Panther is spring-loaded and ready to POUNCE!

Today in Tempe
From the O.C. Register:

"It was pretty obvious Tempe Diablo Stadium isn't where the action was Tuesday. In fact, half of the Angels clubhouse was crammed into a nearby conference room to watch the first four innings of the Venezuela-Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic game. Because the TV in the room wasn't hooked up to cable, they were watching a computer feed of the game. It was like a high-speed slide show, but everybody was still buzzing about Bartolo Colon's three scoreless innings and the hits Edgardo Alfonzo kept getting . . . ."
