Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 30/162

Game Thread - Angels at Blue Jays at 4:07 pm (Pacific) on FSN
Ervin "Black Magic" Santana Vs. Gustavo "Sister Gustave" Chacin

Star-divide

The only two starting pitchers on my fantasy team that are not injured are these two !!!! Out of purely selfish reasons, I hope that the Angels score a lot of unearned runs while shutting out the Pajarros Azulos.

FOX's Ken Rosenthal on Team Feathered Cobalt:
One problem for the Blue Jays is that they're not getting enough innings out of their starters with A.J. Burnett on the disabled list, Roy Halladay rebounding from a sore forearm and Josh Towers averaging only 4 1/3 innings per start. The team's bullpen woes are a predictable consequence; the Royals are the only team in the majors getting fewer innings per start out of their rotation . . .

Scouting Report
Some Angel Batters Against Sister Gustave
Vlad 3/5 1.667 ops
Kennedy 2/3 1.333 ops

Sister Gustave has a 4-1 record despite a 4.70 era. I guess that means that Blue Canada has been scoring a lot of runs in support of their Sister's efforts...

my picks...and a question...
what the hell, I'll give this a try:
Angels 7 runs 13 hits
Blue Jays 4 runs 9 hits

Hopefully, they'll still be riding high on their win. With Carrasco, Lackey & Weaver up to pitch the next games, they need to pull it together.

I do have a question/comment: With Molina catching for Toronto, do you think that is a huge disadvantage since he knows the batting styles of the Angels so well?????

Chacin is Trouble
He's a soft-tossing junkballer, precisely the type of pitcher that gives the Angels fits (3 ER in 14 IP last year).  Also, Rex Hudler simply cannot pronounce his name correctly (it usually comes out as "sah-SHEEN" rather than "SHA-seen"), so prepare to be constantly annoyed if you're watching on the tube.

Ervin will be on his game tonight.  In fact, it's my belief that Santana pitches better when the Angels have trouble scoring for him than when he's got a comfortable run cushion.

Angels: 3/7
True Gays: 2/5

Note: I don't want to come off sounding homophobic.  Angels4Adam's "blue gays" reminded me that back when I was a kid, I used to have some fun altering baseball cards (common players, only!), whether it was to mess with their hair, erase out the eyes, or simply add an evil mustache.  Once, I changed "Blue Jays" across a long-forgotten player's jersey to "True Gays."  At age 12, I thought I was incredibly clever.

by Rev Halofan on May 5, 2006 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I think
I still have it.  My parents never threw out any of my old baseball cards, perhaps because my mom, a Yankees fan, was heartbroken when her parents threw out her baseball cards when they moved to California in the 1950s.  She had DiMaggio, Mantle, etc. in her collection; she could have retired years earlier if they'd been kept.

I've got some shoeboxes (Vans boxes, to be precise, from when Vans were originally cool and were made in the USA) with all of my old baseball cards.  Maybe I could put together a collection of my "original work."  If I didn't shower for a week, maybe I could even convince someone that I'm a starving artist genius-type!

This lineup is 'Fun-kaay'. Although, the 6-8 hitters are still mediocre, as usual.

I'd flip Kennedy with Kendrick. AK batting 5 with Kenny Howdrick in the 9 slot.

by proletariat on May 5, 2006 4:01 PM PDT reply actions

AK
likes batting 9th or something, but at some point Sosh needs to put the team ahead of what AK likes and bat him where he can actually use the fact that he's hitting singles and doubles to use

by Matt UK on May 5, 2006 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

i have to backpedal...
I would make the observation that this lineup that sosh has minimizes 1-2-3 innings the most, given the roster. So I don't think it's necessarily just Sosh's indulgence of AK wishes to put him in 9 tonite (given all the newbies).

No
occaisionally you'll notice it with the Astros and a handful of silly costumed teams like the Friars. and is it cool or lame? i say that it is quite invalid.

Don't those teams
have shirts that have Houston or San Diego on them though, even if they have versions that don't? None of the Angels shirts have Anaheim or Los Angeles on. I just noticed how when they showed Glaus homering in the 02 WS the grey road jersey had ANAHEIM on it, whereas tonight it has ANGELS like the home one

the angels are the only team in mlb... and maybe all of pro american sports... that use the team nickname exclusively on all uniforms with no locality mentioned.

by proletariat on May 5, 2006 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions

i think so
it's part of the angels' strategy to market "angels baseball" instead of "[name of city] angels". the radio network is also called the "angels radio network", whereas most (all?) teams have their city names in there. also, commentators don't substitute "Los Angeles" or "Anaheim" for "Angels" when they're speaking of the team.

by yeswecan on May 5, 2006 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Just had a quick look
and from what I can see the Cardinals, Brewers and Orioles also don't display their town on the road jersey, so I guess I answered my own question!

But recent studies hint that your best hitters should bat 1st, 2nd, and 4th ... so putting Vlad in the clean-up spot doesn't really bother me.  The difference is very small.

I disagree...
and here's why:
He did this before, early in the season to Izturis when he would've clearly scored.  Figgy knows that and so he ran through the sign.  You're already down 6, no reason not to run, you have got to get something started and running on the basepaths to force errors is the way to do that.

As good as he is and as young as he is, the chances that he will want a different set of rules for him than for the other players means that he would not work out in the Angels clubhouse.

I don't know if he will go on to be the best player in baseball besides pujols, but I do know that his swagger will be incomaptible with all but the loosest group of apatheitc veterans and unimpressionable rookies.

how about
if they agree to take Alfonzo and Yan too?

by leftwing on May 5, 2006 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

As tremendous a hitter
as Miggy is, Kendrick/Wood have a chance to be a dominating double-play combo from around 2008 or '09 through 2012 or so, and possibly beyond.  That's of huge value.

Of course, that's theoretical, possible value, and Cabrera is pretty much guaranteed value.  So it's a tough question.  My gut is to hang on to our guys.

yeah, it is a tough one...
Pros:  Closest thing to Pujols and he's only 23 or so, Vlad won't be around forever it would be nice to pair him with a stud like this like the Red Sox 3-4 hitters and to have an heir apparent ready when he's gone, can play OF or 3B, we'd be pretty much guaranteed the most talented team in the West the next few years.

Cons:  Like Rev said, his attitude has been a question mark, Wood seems mature beyond his years, Kendrick has hit for a high average everywhere he's been and looks comfortable so far.

NO!
You can't trade both Kendrick and Wood.  I would send Wood before Kendrick and I would think Wood is the more attractive commodity when sending away the production Of Cabrera.

and like the Rev said Cabrera is close to Manny in his lack of concentration but I think at this point the offense would be worth the headaches associated with a 23 superstar.

by riktermiller on May 5, 2006 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

i think
that winning baseball games would take away alot of that "headache" for me.

by angels4adam on May 5, 2006 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

And also
Anytime you trade TWO prospects for a grade A player - you are doubly haunted - what if one is a bust but one is a superstar and MigCab suddenly twists something near some tendon?

Howie for Miggy-C - MAYBE
Wood for him - MAYBE

But not both.

by Rev Halofan on May 5, 2006 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

put it this way....
if they did it, I wouldn't blame them, and if they don't I wouldn't blame them.

It would sure be nice being the favorite in the AL though.  Basically, since he's only 23 and a superstar, we'd be getting the ultimate 'can't miss' prospect for two guys that may be great, may be mediocre.

Tough call for a GM though.  I do like Wood and Kendrick, no doubt.

by thewebb on May 5, 2006 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

wow
you said that m cabrera might twist something.  i'm pretty sure there is an equal chance of wood or kendrick twisting something as anyone else.  the fact that you said that you might not even trade kendrick OR wood one-for-one is just plain silly.  cabrera has a GREAT chance to be one of the best players in baseball over the next 15 years, and youre saying that you wouldnt even take the chance of trading ONE of our players who is UNPROVEN and at best has a CHANCE of being as good as miguel in the next 15 years.  that sounds alot like retardation to me.

What I meant was
if you only get one player in a trade, one injury means you got NOTHING in the trade.

IF you give up two players ina  trade and one is a bust, you still traded a way a player who was not a bust.

by Rev Halofan on May 5, 2006 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions

ok
that makes more sense, but i would still give them any two of our "prospects" for a already proven superstar, 2-time all-star, silver slugger, (I can go on and on) 23-year old.

Agree, not both
Also, I'm pleased to hear you acknowledge the importance of a player's clubhouse demeanor to the ultimate winning or losing of the franchise. You seemed to pushing hard for Manny so I wasn't sure whether you were acknowledging this kind of stuff...This is one of the big reasons I generally frown on bringing in "big name" veterans to this core group of players (Salmon, Erstad, G.A., etc.) because in most cases they won't fit in.

I think Vlad is different because he's very unassuming and has a certain innocent, child-like quality that makes him less threatening than other superstars.

by Jack Frost on May 5, 2006 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Vlad Childlike?
I hung with the team on night and the dude is NOT childlike, he is deferred to by everyone, He speaks English and hangs out as one of the guys - but they all defer to him. Him and Erstad.

There was no doubt who the MAN was. He drank Coronas all night, his girl had cocktails, he never got out of hsi seat - never had to. But he hung with Mathis, Saunders and Josh Paul like they were the sprkplugs on the whole damn engine

  1. Chad Guadin and the A's are CHUMPS and hit his elbow, bruising it, he is in the dugout with a tight wrap around it.
  2. Scioscia has not Finley to love and believe in and Alturdo is the next best overpaid stump for Mikey to love.

I'm just glad
things are back to normal.

Did anyone else know that the Royals were offered Alex Rios numerous times in deals for pitching? I can hardly believe that the Royals had a hard time identifing talent!

He can only get excited about RECOUNTING the past.

If Q can play the field do you start him at 3B and Howie at 1B or do you take a chance and subject Howie to his first game at 3B on the turf?  I am not even going to give a thought to Alfonso being in the lineup again.
