Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 32/162

Game Thread - Angels at Blue Jays at 4:07 pm (Pacific) on FSN
Jeff "Elder" Weaver versus Roy "Cy2-03" Halladay

Star-divide

Darin Erstad is on the disabled list, Juan Rivera has returned to the Angels.
If you are looking for Rivera to be our savior, you're looking pretty desperate.

Scouting Report
Some Angel Batters Against Cy2-03
Garret 8/17 1.417 ops
Alfonzo 6/12 1.167 ops
Tim Salmon 5/13 1.044 ops

Would I sound whiny if I pointed out the excellent W/L records of the teams we have faced so far this season?
That was rhetorical, by the way...

Random iTunes Lyrics
Well Mack the Finger said to Louie the King
I got forty red white and blue shoestrings
and a thousand telephones that don't ring.
Do you know where I can get rid of these things?

Ah, who am I kidding?  The Angels have no chance against Halladay.  None.

Which means they'll probably win.

As poorly as the Angels have played...
...they're still only three games out.

The Angels have the best pitching staff in the west and if these bats ever come alive at all, they'll start to win some series.  I tend to be pessimistic by nature, but I'm still holding out plenty of hope for this season.

Quick point about Weaver: his K, BB, and HR rates aren't that far off from last year's.  If he continues to pitch like he has, the ERA will come down.  Not below 4.00, but it will come down.

by Dogman on May 8, 2006 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

I'm still optimistic
The past couple years our boys have flat sucked at their place, so a win tonight and a split to will feel pretty good.

Halo Fever P239

by P237 on May 8, 2006 5:17 PM PDT reply actions

It's really depressing
to realize that the Angels have no chance of winning any game in which the opposition scores 3 runs or more.  There's the occasional fluke, such as Thursday (?) against Detroit when the team somehow lucked into 7 runs.  But that can't happen more than once every 7-10 days.

Depressing.

It's almost comical watching how bad the lineup is collectively.  I mean, we're talking K.C. Royals, but with decent pitching.

by jjackflash on May 8, 2006 5:18 PM PDT reply actions

What BS
These are kids. This is going to be a tough year, no getting around that.  But there is NO, and I repeat NO, similarity to Kansas City's situation. How many players do the Royals have in BA's top 100? Three. How many players did the Angels have? Seven.

And while I'm writing this, Tommy Murphy doubles and OCab hits him home.

Sheesh.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

What is more important: The Angels winning or you being right?

by Rev Halofan on May 8, 2006 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Good for you
I understand all that, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em. Weaver is mediocre, Toronto can hit, and the Angels can't right now.

Propaganda
Remember last year, when Steve Finley was DUE every at-bat, Rex and Steve pumping him up, talking a great game about how close he was?

And he never was...

This year it is Mickey Hatcher.

As Vlad grounds into a double play, Steve Physioc does not miss a beat in remindig us all in teevee land that it was MICKEY HATCHER who led the Angels to a World Series and Two Division Titles in three of the past four years.

neither scioscia nor stoneman's gonna do anything right now. but if hatcher can't get these guys to turn it around, then maybe it's time for someone else.

by yeswecan on May 8, 2006 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

So they're kids
I'm just starting to think that maybe the kids just aren't all they're cracked up to be.

I know, I know, there are lots of starts who had crappy rookie seasons.

But Oakland's kids seem to be able to come up to the big leagues and perform admirably.

As some (including you, I believe) have pointed out, the Angels' prospects don't get on base and don't hit for power, for the most part.  Their OBP tends to be average-based.  If they're not hitting, they don't get on at all, and when they do hit, they hit singles.

Even Vlad no longer seems to be able to hit for any power.

Once again, I look at Mickey Hatcher...it seems that the more time hitters spend around him, the worse they get.

by jjackflash on May 8, 2006 5:32 PM PDT reply actions

oaklands kids
usually come up when they are 25 or 26 instead of 22 or 23 like most of ours..

by Rev Halofan on May 8, 2006 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

correction
Er, that is, there are lots of stars who've had crappy rookie seasons.

by jjackflash on May 8, 2006 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I think so far
Howie has proven that he can get on base even when he is not getting hits.  I believe that the Angels suffer from a difference in opinion or lack of direction.  They bring up Howie to fit him and move him around the diamond, they weren't paient with Mathis and put him in the position to fail (partly due to the offensive ineptitude of JOMO) rather than a position to thrive, and Sosh has a tendency to rely on vets who are useless (see Alfonso) rather than finding a way to get the new blood at bats.  I don't know if the problem lies with Sosh, Stoneman, or both (most likely) but issues such as these need to be solved so the Angels have the ability to make a strong push in the second half.

The main difference between the A's and Angles prospects is experience based.  Oakland rookies such as Swisher (who was struggled last season) and Huston Street had college experience before the minor leagues to add to their skillset.

by riktermiller on May 8, 2006 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

About Vlad not hitting for power
Ahem. Vlad's in second place in SLG on the team, only following Mike Napoli. (Mr. Small Sample Size reminds us 11 AB is hardly a large enough number to tell how good he'll be.)

The real problem is Vlad's lack of extra-base production outside of homers. He's near the bottom of team doubles production, and I wonder if that's maybe not a problem with his speed.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

by scareduck on May 8, 2006 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Squeakers
His singles seem to have been quite a few squeakers.

His speed in the outfield seems as good as ever.

Edgardo Alfonso
Esteban Yan
Mickey Hatcher - hitting coach may be the toughest coaching job but Hatcher has never been a hitter making the job impossible.

by riktermiller on May 8, 2006 5:32 PM PDT reply actions

Bulger
If Jason Bulger continues to keep his ERA under 1.00 and strikes guys out left and right, as he is doing at SLC, I can't see how they can reasonably keep the sweet potato on the roster.

by jjackflash on May 8, 2006 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem hasn't been
the pitching, either the starters or the bullpen.

by UK Halo on May 8, 2006 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions

true
but if the offense isn't there every pitcher on the staff has to be able to be a stopper.  If Yan is put into close games and continues to hand out runs there is no way the Angels can hit enough to come back.  So further strenghtening the pitching staff will benefit the offense.
