Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 60/162

Game Thread - Mariners at Angels - Jarrod Washburn vs. Kelvim Escobar - 7:05pm

Star-divide

Jarrod hasn't won a game on the road yet, and Kelvim has pitched better than his record indicates. If the Angels can provide Kelvim some defense and a little offense, We might hear a post-game interview go something like this...

Intentionally Altered Movie Lines:
Mike Scioscia:
We're very lucky on this team in that we have two visionaries, Vlad and Kelvim, they're like poets, like Shelley and Byron. They're two distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice, basically. I feel my role in the organization is to be somewhere in the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water.

Halos Heaven/Angels Blog Meet Up
All -
Been talking with HeyLegacy about this idea, of a meet-up for drinks, food, typical tomfoolery at a sports bar somewhere in the OC while the Halos are out of town.  I will "volunteer" to handle the "logistics" of getting the place alerted, etc....  The dates we were thinking are:
Tuesday June 20 v. San Francisco or
  Friday June 23 v. Arizona
My email is listed if you click on my name, please feel free to shoot me an email if you're interested and I'll set the whole thing up.

Friday Night Fights...Oh, Wait, Line-Ups
Tonight's line-ups for your Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim) and the Seattle Mariners:

Mariners:
Suzuki - RF - .362
Beltre - 3B - .229
Lopez - 2B - .268
Ibanez - LF - .289
Sexson - 1B - .215
Everett - DH - .248
Johjima - C - .268
Reed - CF - .216
Betancourt - SS - .292
Washburn - P - 4.50
Finally, a team with a team BA of under .300

Halos:
Figgins - CF - .254
Cabrera - SS - .296
Anderson - LF - .282
Guerrero - RF - .324
Salmon - DH - .271
Morales - 1B - .279
Napoli - C - .323
Quinlan - 3B - .244
Kennedy - 2B - .273

I'd rather see "O'"Murphy in CF and Figgy at 3B, but....Mike is the boss.

my new pavlovian reaction
i upchuck just a small bit of stomach juice every time i see Quinlan's name in the lineup.

by yeswecan on Jun 9, 2006 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

McPherson
I'd like to see Dallas get some AB against lefties (and Washburn seems like a good candidate, as he's not exactly known for big sweeping curveballs), just to find out if he'll ever be more than a platoon player.

Quinlan has done pretty much nothing lately.  With Maicier Izturis due back momentarily, though, I don't see Quinlan getting many more opportunities.

by jjackflash on Jun 9, 2006 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

agree about dallas
I think Sosh takes the righty/lefty thing too far sometimes. Once he decides someone is only good against one or the other, bam, that's it, they never get another chance to prove they can hit both. How are these youngsters ever supposed to turn into everyday players if they don't get ABs? Its just going to make him worse against leftys if all he ever sees is rightys.

by leftwing on Jun 9, 2006 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

R/L irony
the irony of scioscia's righty-lefty obsession is that he made the opposite argument for why the angels didn't have a lefty reliever for so many years. and i agreed with him: if the righties are getting lefties out, then there's no need for a lefty! likewise, if lefty batters can hit righties, then put 'em in!

by yeswecan on Jun 9, 2006 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Quinlan's career against lefties
.315/.357/.509, in 222 ABs. Sitting 25% of the time shouldn't stunt Dallas' growth too much, and we do have a division to win. Quinlan should never face a RHP for the rest of his life, agreed, but a platoon w/ Dallas will be very effective.

Are
Escobar and Vlad having a pissing contest on the field?  Vlad has made a couple of errors while Escobar has been pitching and in turn Escobar threw the wild pitch to let Vlad's run score.

by higdog on Jun 9, 2006 8:19 PM PDT reply actions

Escobar
Has struck out roughly 18% of batters faced.

Other years:

  1.  26% (but it should be higher for relieving)
  2.  22%
  3.  20% (some relief)
  4.  24% (all relief)
So he is down a bit this year, coming into this game ... dunno if K rates are down league-wide, I suspect they might be a bit.

Escy's night is done and we don't come back, in his last five games he'll be 0-5 with a 4.05 ERA.

That's some bad luck ... and his defensive support has been about as good as his offensive support.
