Bowden High, Soriano Price Outrageous

the LAT is reporting that Bowden asked for one of the following:
Lackey, Santana, Weaver
AND
Kendrick or Wood

I have a link and the full copy from ESPN on Soriano here.
Jim Bowden MUST be out of his mind, hope he doesn't mind not getting anything for Sori, who'll be a free agent at the end of the year anyway.

This weekend
Hopefully the asking prices will come down by the weekend when it gets down to the wire.

I want some of what HE'S on...
Hello, a partial season rent a player for players under contract/club control for years????

Lackey just signed a multi year deal..

Weaver got a multi year deal when he signed last year..

Santana and Kendrick are making major league minimum or so, and Wood hasn't even made it to the bigs, yet, so is cheap, too..

That must be some GOOD stuff he's got, cause he's in "Alice in Wonderland" mode.

Well...
Soriano's having a great offensive year, and the Nats would be stupid not to try to get SOMETHING out of his expiring contract and their lack of contention.

We're in the hunt for the playoffs, and we won't be if getting Soriano costs us one of our crucial starting pitchers.  But you know what?  Any shortlist of teams with both the propensity and the pocketbook to sign Soriano in the offseason has to include the Angels, so why not wait for the hot stove?

The voice of reason
There's nothing in this flea market that the Angels won't have first or second dibs on in the offseason, when all it will cost them is a draft pick.

This is the EXACT issue I posed to Stoneman...
...when I got to ask him my one question. Why does it appear as though are we always being held up for some highway robbery?

This is just that sort of example: how is it that the rumor mill has Soriano only costing the ChiSox Brandon McCarthy, and Chicago thinks that this price is too high, but the cost for the Angels for that same player would be Lackey, Santana, Weaver AND Kendrick or Wood???? Why are we always being held up for some highway robbery?

Stoneman did not give a straight answer. Even his loopy answer didn't say anything.

Then again, this comes from the LAT. Idiots.

sorry...
I should have wrote "Lackey, Santana OR Weaver AND Kendrick or Wood".

Because
this sort of thing originates with either the writers themselves (imagining stuff to put in the paper), agents hoping to move players to high-payroll teams (Boras, etc.), or front offices sending up trial baloons.  Trade rumors are mostly rubbish.

yeah, and according to the White Sox/Soriano
rumor I heard.  They were trying to figure out the 3rd player coming from the Sox.  Washington wanted the 3rd player to be McCarthy, the White Sox said no way.

Robbery
Why does it appear as though are we always being held up for some highway robbery?

Because they're worth robbing.  Remember the scene in "Vacation" where they fly the car off the dirt road.  The mechanic fixes the Truckster, and when Clark asks him how much it will cost, the guy says "how much you got?"  When you're dealing with desperate people, you try and get as much as you can, and the Angels have a ton.

Hopefully as the deadline approaches, sellers start to compare value in terms of talent as opposed to value in terms of how a guy ranks in a team's system.  We're a day or two away from that point.

Soraino
Will not be in a Halos uni this year, and I am more than fine with that. Although I do believe we need to make a trade for help at 1b or 3b, Soriano and Bowdens price tag is just plain insane. If we want him for the long term get sign him on the open market!

In my eyes we need another reliever and another bat in the middle of the lineup. I am even find with a Platoon at 1b with Q, hopefully someone with a good glove that can be a late game defensive replacement as well. I know everyone wants to keep Howie's bat in the lineup as do I, but 1b is not the place to put him. If push comes to shove Scosh will have to make the decision of benching AK or Ga to put Kendrick in the lineup. I would hope it is the benching of AK and not GA. GA will be alright, he will produce. He just isnt the GA of the past!

Just trade for
Ryan Shealy. He'll come cheaper. Aybar or Mathis straight up will get him.

What Stoneman should do:
Bow: Give me Lackey, Santana, or Weaver and Kendrick or Wood and a handjob.

Sto: Fuck you. Start off more reasonable, or I announce the Angels are no longer interested in Soriano, which drives down the price.

Bow: Okay, forget the handjob, my penis is too small.

Sto: Click

Me: Yeah, you heard right. A dick joke.

I know 75% of everything...
you hear this time of year is bullshit but I wonder how serious Stoney is about going for Tejada.  His name has popped up with the Angels everyday over the last week...

by gorams77 on Jul 27, 2006 12:12 PM PDT reply actions

Hmmm. That brings up an interesting thought...
What if I were Stoneman? What if I really felt that we would turn out Ok, if I just showed a little patience? Maybe having a shot at stealing a division title is enough for this year. What, therefore, could I do to improve my position EVEN THOUGH I WAS NOT GOING TO ENTER THE TRADE MARKET?

Well, one thing I would consider would be to let rumors fly via office staff, and/or make inquisitive phone calls to agents, and/or make inquisitive phone calls to other GM's, and let the world think that I might be interested in everybody that my competitors are interested in. I would not want my competition to be able to improve their situation cheaply, and I am the guy sitting on a hell of a lot of capital.

Take the Soriano situation. The more current talent and future talent that I can get to migrate over to the National League, the better my prospects are in the near future. Sure, it's always a long shot. And sure, the net difference might be slight. But the cost to me is only 3 cents per minute on the phone bill.

Maybe...just maybe...I would get myself an alias on Halos Heaven. And then...   ; )
