Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 84/162

Game Thread - Angels at Mariners - Colon vs. Moyer - 7:05 pm

Star-divide

So yeah, here is the deal, our weakest pitching link is the reigning Cy Young Award Winner.
Our pitcher's so fat, he digests your lineup.
Your pitcher's so old, he threw the Brylcreem ball before it was outlawed.

Intentionally Altered Movie Lyrics:
Bartolo: My name? Franz Kafka.
Police Officer: Hm. You think I am ignorant?

I hope we score Bartolo some runs before night falls.

Jumbo
This is start #4 for Colon since coming off the DL.  I predicted it would take 5 starts before the Angels realized he's not healthy enough to get it done, though the fact that they haven't realized it yet makes me want to increase that number.

In any event, tonight's results will provide further evidence.  Colon will probably last about 6 innings, and will give up runs in four of those.

Angels: 3/7

The FO measures success differently for Colon
than it does for everyone else.  Any ERA below 6.00 is a good thing, considering his injury.

He needs to be shut down, but that won't happen.

Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.

Could not agree more...with one exception
Someone please explain to me why we rushed a power guy back form the DL without his power arm? Meanwhile, we had five guys making quality starts almost everynight.  Regardless, Colon will not complete his meltdown tonight - That will happen in his next start (you know, the one after  Weaver clears waivers and we are left scrambling looking for a fifth starter.)  Oh wow, Carrasco lovers unite!

by gorams77 on Jul 5, 2006 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

I'm not sure you can stick a fork in Colon yet
I1) the fork could sink deep into his body and you'll never retrieve it.

(2) He's got his control, it's just a question of getting his velocity back up.  I don't the Angels would be putting him out there every 5th day if they didn't think it was going to come back.

(3) Not having his plus fastball makes him extremely hittable because the batters don't have to worry about his best pitch, but the more his fastball's velocity comes up, he'll get closer and closer the Colon of 2005.

People have to remember, throwing high 90s, you've got to be strong, and his being out has taken that away, but not necassarily forever.  The next month is crucial.  He doesn't have to get back to 2005 Colon immediately, but if the number on the radar gun starts ticking back up, he's on his way and may be back to his old self in the late summer and the playoffs, and it's always handy to have a CY Young type pitcher around that time of year.

by johnsamo @ Halos Heaven on Jul 5, 2006 3:15 PM PDT reply actions

The key phrase
I don't the Angels would be putting him out there every 5th day if they didn't think it was going to come back.

I have little doubt that this is what the Angels' braintrust thinks.  However, when 100% of the evidence is to the contrary (indeed, his velocity appears to be decreasing with each outing), it's time to question your thoughts or thought process.

In his first start back, I was somewhat impressed because Colon was hitting 93 and 94 on the gun, not that far off from his usual.  But by his last outing, according to the radio guys, he was only in the mid-80s, never getting above 90.  Good high school players can hit an 85 m.p.h. fastball.  So unless Bart becomes his opponent (i.e., some reasonable facsimile of Jamie Moyer), he's in deep doo-doo.

From The LA Times
Then the referee showed Rooney a melodramatic red card. Then Rooney, 20, grimaced like a petulant teenager and departed the field to go kick a water bottle. Then England had to play with only 10 men, which meant England probably could win only with penalty kicks, which meant England probably couldn't win, owing to some sort of eerie chemical in English obstetrics units that prevents English children from growing up to take successful penalty kicks.

(Only one of four England players made one Saturday, and he was born in Canada.)

Terry Evans
An outfielder, 24 years old...started the year at Palm Beach (A) and went .311/.373/.550.  Spent the last month at Springfield (AA), where he posted a .307/.369/.640 mark.

15 HR at Palm Beach (60 games), 7 (in 21 games) at Springfield.  But this is the number that the Angels liked the best: at AA, he walked only 3 times against 21 Ks (20/50 at single A).

He's also 26/28 stealing bases this year, combined.

by jjackflash on Jul 5, 2006 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

We already have a Terry Evans in the system
I know he is injured but the numbers sound similar to Nick Gorneault. Terry Evans will be 25 when he is invited to spring training next year.  I guess the cash is also a consideration but anything less than 1.5M would not make sense to me.

jjackflash, sort this one out for me.

Jeff Weaver Traded To Cardinals
Breaking word is that Jeff Weaver has been dealt to the Cardinals for minor league outfielder Terry Evans plus cash considerations.
Evans is a 24 year-old outfielder currently hitting .307/.369/.640 in 75 ABs for the Cards' Double A affiliate. He struggled in High Class A last year, but mastered the level in two months this season.  He's been described as the "out of nowhere prospect who mashed his way out of A ball" by Viva El Birdos.

Down on the Farm
Meanwhile, for those who like to keep tabs on the Angels' prospects, Jose Arredondo had his first start for AA Arkansas today.  I think he did OK: 9IP, 5H, 0R, 2BB, and 8Ks.  He got the win, albeit barely, as the Travs managed but one unearned run.

He had a no-hitter going through 4 2/3.

by hathaway93 on Jul 5, 2006 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, I guess
His fastball is still only 89-92.  In the past, he has gotten stronger as the game wears on, but he'd usually start 92-94, and reach 96 or 97 in later innings.  But if this means that he'll reach 95 later in the game, then I suppose that's OK.

But 89 is a lot different than 95.

His control seems good.

Sure is a shame
When a sweet-tempered guy like Carl Everett is provoked into losing his temper.  I'm sure he's in the clubhouse right now, on the phone to his anger-management sponsor, Jose Guillen.

Thanks Bart, your fantasy status needed that!

sweet victory
our first sweep of the season.  if we sweep oakland and detroit sweeps seattle...that puts us right around first place, depending on how texas does... sweet.

Almost as nice as the sweep
The Angels went an entire series without making an error.

Four games is still a lot to make up, and they can't afford to go 1-3 or get swept in Oakland.  But it's starting to look like they're a third baseman and a reliever away from being a pretty decent team again.
