Jered Weaver, ROY?

With Jered Weaver reaching the 9-0 mark with some 40 games to go he is now in great position to receive the Rookie of the year award.  Liriano is out for awhile and Verlander has strugged in his last two starts while complaining of fatigue (see Joe Saunders).  That pitching trio seems like the front-runners for the award.  Was Tim Salmon our last ROY?

Salmon was our ONLY R.O.Y.
Verlander and Liriano still have the inside track, although if Weaver stays as god as he has been withut fading to fatigue, breaks Whitey Ford's record and the Angels make the playoffs, Jered will get it.

freudian slip?
"although if Weaver stays as god as he has been"

pitching is next to godliness??

Unfortunately...
..I think Jonathan Papelcrap is gonna win it.

Oh yeah
The Boston Hype Sox's closer.  Forgot about him, he is probably the front runner if both Verlander and Liriano fall out of the running.

Pipillon may already be fading...
He had good outings against Baltimore and Detroit, but that gives him only 4 over the past month.

Actually
that would be cool that a teammate of Salmon - our only R.O.Y. - wins the award in his final season.

If Weaver...
loses one game somebody over on the east coast will win it simple as that.

East Coast bias
Either Papelbon wins it, or Verlander what with the Tigers having the best record in MLB and coming out of nowhere to do it
Liriano missing pretty much the rest of the season rules him out I think.
If Jered hadn't gone down for that month then he'd be right up there I think

by Matt UK on Aug 19, 2006 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

hmm
At this point...

It looks like Verlander since the Tigers did come from nowhere this year I mean c'mon.

Unbreakable!
Of course we're getting ahead of ourselves, but if he goes like 14-0, then he gets it.

I think 8 starts left.  It's possible, but not likely he can go undefeated.

by elricsi on Aug 19, 2006 5:11 PM PDT reply actions

Weaver could go undefeated
And the East Coast Mafia will say he didn't have enough innings due to his late May call up and subsequent 3 start demotion. The only way Papel-bon-bon doesn't get it is if he gives up 8 or 9 runs over a 5 outing span and blows 4-5 more save opportunities. Even then he probably gets it just for being a fucking chowderhead.

Papelbon
blew another save yesterday in The Series to End All Series - his ERA is now 1.00

this is just an incredible year for AL Rookies
maybe the all time best. in addition to the 5 or 6 worthy pitchers mentioned, there's our own Mike Napoli and Kenji Johjima too.

in a normal year, any of them could be a ROY.

as for Salmon being the only Halo to win it, GA should have too but he was robbed. Marty Cordova of the Twins won in 1995. Wally Joyner had a decent case too in 1986 but Canseco won, which i think was fair.

Also fyi Alfredo Griffin won ROY in 1979

G.A. didn't get called up until June...
...so his aggregate numbers were less than Cordova's, therefore Cordova won.

Napoli is going to have to learn
how to make consistent contact. This was a problem for him in the minors, and obviously continues to be an issue for him.  No Jackie Robinson Award for Napoli.
Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.
