Jerry Remy

Being a fan of the Angels, we have been subjected to (IMO) some of the worst baseball television announcers in the game. Probably second in line to those white-sox announcers.

I just wanted to say that this ex-Halo is an absolute pleasure to listen to. If theres anything about playing the Sox that I look forward to, its listening to Jer shed his insight on my team. In my opinion he's second in line as best active announcer under The legendary Vin Scully. He's unbiased and gives really good baseball insight at all the right times. The last game I heard him call was the one in which Jerred Weaver was going for his 8th consecutive W, we lost but it was a great game and Rem-dog killed it that day. You could tell in the tone of his voice he liked calling halo games. Thanks for all the kinds words on our team and your ex-team rem-dog, you da man!

whos your favorite announcer aside from Vin?

AL CONIN
Bring back Al Conin

Right on
Fuckin' Jackie.

I brought this up before.
Al Conin was awesome. Almost as good as the Dick Enberg original.

Reasonable minds can differ....
...but Conin is not in the same universe as Enberg.  In fact, from what I remember of his style, he is closer to Physioc.

First thing you need to know...
...is that there is nothing reasonable about the mind I have been dealt. Oh, were that it so...

I love the Hawk
besides being a "homer", i don't understand the animosity towards the Hawk.

i really enjoy listening to Ken Harrelson- i'd love for him to come to the ANGELS. and think it'd be so cool for him to be calling us 'the good guys'

Jon Miller would be great too.

and i never did like Al Conin.

i think Terry and Rory are cool - no problem with them whatsover.

Phys and Hud? ummmm, can we tell the IDF that Sheik Nasrallah is regularly hanging out with those two?

by rbrianc on Aug 22, 2006 1:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's mostly because he's a dick
No one's ever known as much about baseball as Hawk Harrelson.  Just ask him.

And it's not that he's "just" a homer.  Hudler is a homer.  It's natural get excited and be happy to see the home team do something good.  They're with those guys all season, and they're friends.  But it's another to sit there and say "C'mon, Paulie, take him right here.  You got him, Paulie, take him right here."  It's really pathetic to sit there and root for the your team from the press box.

Hell, even Physioc and Hudler show some enthusiasm when the other team hits a home run.  That's the only time I'll turn the sound on for Hawk and DJ.  I love hearing how quiet they get when the Sox choke on it.

that's why i'd love for him to be on our side
i thought he was cool too as a player.

It says something
that the first Google search result on "Hawk Harrelson" is a page dedicated to his removal.  Hawk is an unabashed homer who relies on cliches to get through his day, and has never had an original insight (not to mention an honest one).  The White Sox broadcast team, on the rare occaisions I have to listen to them, are easily among the worst in baseball, down with the Pirates game callers and the Braves' somnambulistic crew (though the Braves have improved some with Skip Carey on the job).

Vin
Just Vin. I grew up a Dodger fan. Nobody else comes close.

by Carl Johnson on Aug 22, 2006 3:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

any sport?
Keith Jackson - like Vin Scully and the Dodgers, life was good on a November Saturday afternoon when Keith was calling the game.  When the "big uglies" were "swappin' some paint," college football was at its best.  He'll be missed.

And let's face it - LA fans have been spoiled by Chick Hearn and Bob Miller.  Great.  Also:  remember when Dick Enberg called the Rams games?

Next best baseball announcer?  Al Michaels, except I haven't heard him do a baseball game in ages...currently, Dan Schulman of ESPN radio.

Next favorite Angel announcer?  Ken Wilson (just kidding).  Definitely Dick Enberg - there's no comparison.

Enberg did UCLA basketball too
Don Drysdale was awesome too. i enjoyed Torre and Sparky too when they were on for us. i loved it when Ernie Harwell did some games for us that year.

I forgot about Wilson
Was he worse than Physioc?  It's a close call.

I vote for Al Michaels or Costas

Too young to remember Enberg, but Conin/Starr were great (at least in memory). I liked Ron Fairly too, but I was just a 10/11 year old kid back then.

While I hate the Dodgers, I have always respected Scully, but frankly I don't really enjoy listening to him. His voice and cadence are unrivaled, but I find that he too often digresses into his stories from 40-50 years ago to the detriment of calling the game.

Frankly I don't give a shit about the the time Duke Snider missed a series because he tripped over his dog which he happened to buy off Gil Hodges's next-door neighbors's best friend's sister in law from Brooklyn before the move out west. Keep the stories shorter Vin. To his defense, at least he speaks proper English and doesn't use meaningless phrases like "Rid and Trol".

In Vinnie's defense...
...back when the Dodgers actually played good baseball Scully did not have to carry the entertainment burden and fill the air time. When the product on the field sux, and there is no reason for viewers to be interested in the current 1-2-3 inning, Vinnie is there to instill the spirit of baseball.

What used to grind my grit was (incoming!) Ross Porter. I don't give a shit that Duke Snider batted .485 against left-handed relievers over the first three day games on the road, when he returned after recovering from tripping over that dog.

Vin
I think he's done a bit more of the storytelling since he stopped doing radio broadcasts/simulcasts.  The fact is, there's less need for play-by-play on TV, opening up more air time.  To his credit, more than anyone else I've heard in the last 20 years, Vin isn't afraid to let the sounds of the game itself stand in for his commentary.  Far too many broadcasters feel compelled to ensure that there is no "dead air."

As for Ross Porter, I could not stand the guy when he was with the Dodgers.  But the thing is, I've heard him interviewed since then, and I found him to be witty, knowledgeable and a bit irreverent.  And you know what?  I think he'd make an excellent television play-by-play guy for the Angels, partnered with Jose Mota.

by jjackflash on Aug 23, 2006 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dunno.
My theory is that Porter was on a quest to read aloud all 14.5 million factoids owned by Elias Sports Bureau. Giving him another mic is just handing him the next opportunity to return to his crusade.

Still
That would be far better than the constant "golly-gee-willickers" braying of Physioc.

by jjackflash on Aug 23, 2006 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A matter of personal taste, I guess.
Physioc: "And AK gets a single! Golly-gee-willickers! Molina doubles to left, Kennedy scores!!! Golly-gee-willickers! Figgins pops out to end the ining. Golly-gee-willickers."

versus

Porter: "Back in 1923 Jeff "slacker" Spicoli had a 47 game hitting streak when batting from the left side of the plate. But Spicoli, who was right-handed, rarely batted from the right side anyway. The longest streak in the National League by a second baseman who was naturally right-handed but predominantly hit left-handed was Brad Hamilton, who played two seasons for Cincinnati back when they were still known as the Red Legs. Hamilton once went 39 games. And that should do it. Figgins pops out to short to end the inning, stranding Molina on second. One run scored. We'll be back."

Best on the air
Listen beyond SoCal provincialism.

Off the top of my Halo, the best play-by-play radio guys were/are:

Hank Greenwald, Giants
Harry Caray/Jimmy Piersall, White Sox
Chuck Thompson, Orioles
Jon Miller, Orioles/Giants
Bob Uecker, Brewers
Russ Hodges, Giants
Harry Kalas, Phillies
Pete Franklin, Indians
Jack Buck, Cardinals
Ernie Harwell, Tigers

Rory Markus is pretty good
I have had a chance to listen to a few now on satellite radio.  I must say alot of them are pretty boring or stupid.  Markus does a real good job.  He is pretty objective.

we all have our favorites
and who we hate - differs from one to another. we aren't even unanimous on the greatness of Vin.

but its funny -----
one thing unites us all and we are 100% agreement

- Phys and Hud suck!!

by rbrianc on Aug 23, 2006 3:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes they do suck...
...but I dislike Phys more. At least Hud has an unbridled enthusiasm and a connection to guys like Salmon/G.A./Ersty, since he played with them.

I kinda like the fact that our color guy called up Disarcina on his cell phone and screamed in his ear in 2002.
