Now this is a cool promo night idea!
And it got me a-thinkin'. What's up with Angels promos? They seem real hit and miss, if not trending seriously towards the weak. Sure, the glory days of handing out baseball bats and balls and even seat cushions has gone by the wayside due to some serious fan abuse in the past. And, yeah, when you are already blowing the doors out in attendance do you really need to try so hard to give shit away?
Well, my answer is YES! This is Southern California. The competition for time and attention is huge. It is not enough to sell a ticket to a game. You want to get the people into those seats. The city gets more parking revenue. The attendees purchase more food, beverages and trinkets.
But how many of this season's giveaways will have a shelf life in the household beyond two weeks? Halo Sticks rarely make it through the game at hand. Tote bags and backpacks are too small. Posters? Maybe one sticks around per household. Bobbleheads are aces! Blankets, caps, and clocks are excellent. Calendars, well, Ok. And Big Bang Fridays is an awesome tradition, of recent vintage.
But why not full-sized pennants? If you are going to hand out goofy looking floppy hats, why not dress them up with throw-back logos? Why not issue a new series of rookie cards for Angels Hall of Famers? Why not sponsor massive tailgate parties on Saturdays? Why NOT do a movie night?
