I'm almost crying right now.
This is such a horrible feeling.  And as darkangel pointed out, I should be glad I didn't have to live through '86.

We lose in the final game of the best of 5. So they make the ALCS a best of 7 when? in 1986.

My brother
Was at the game in '86. Remember, this is the same brother who wanted to name me Douglas after Doug DeCinces. Imagine being 10 years old, ready to watch the team you idolize with players you strive to emulate, and having your little boy dreams torn asunder and stomped on (perhaps this partially fuels my residual dislike for the BoSox). He still hasn't gotten over it, though 2002 certainly helped.
Sigh We knew this day was coming. It's just a damn shame that when we sweep a complacent Oakland over the weekend, it won't mean jack shit. Except in a moral, "you're lucky we failed at all the wrong times," kind of way.

Ah, 1986
I spent 16 years dreading the memories of 1986.  But 1986 doesn't matter to me anymore because of 2002.  2002 wiped away any lingering feelings of frustration and consternment I had with past losing Angel efforts.

True, I'd rather go to the game on Friday knowing it could prove decisive in an Angels pennant run.  But the fact that it doesn't will not dampen my enthusiasm for the team.  Hell, they won it all in 2002; they came damn close in 2005.  The fact that this team, with that weak offense and serious injuries, was competitive until the final week of the season is remarkable.  And think--this season saw the emergence of two dominant rookie starting pitchers, an able young catcher and 2nd baseman, and a host of guys waiting in the AAA wings.  I didn't even mention the fact that our owner is prepared to shell out some major dough for a top-flight hitter.  Any Angel fan not excited about the future of this club is an idiot at best, a troll at worst.

So let the A's have their champagne this week.  They did a great job this year winning when they had to.  And smile Angels fans--there's no way they're going beyond the first round of the playoffs!  Unlike the Angels, the A's can't beat the Yankees.

I lived through 86.
But I didn't like it. And it will never get better.

I say we get it up for the weekend. No hitters. Back to back perfect games. outscore the Asses 35 to zip. In game 1. Burn their pitching. Burn their BP. Show them that they needed every last ounce of opportunity on their end and stupidity on our end to barely snag the division away from teh supoerior team.

I. Will. NOT. Surrender.

One Caveat...
...Salmon is the DH all weekend who torches the A's. What great Karma it will be if he gets number 300 against them.

Beat 'em. Beat 'em again.
Embarrass them.
Humiliate them.
Send them off to their playoff journey the victim of some epic pitching mastery.
Hit 7 HR's back to back.
Steal 8 bases in one inning.
Make 3 triple plays in one game.
Strike out 25 A's. In a row.
Hit around. Three times in the same inning.
I. Will. NOT. Surrender.

I know
that they might be longing for some rest, or some relief...but I think that in the end, they're still ballplayers, and they're still getting paid to play a game - I say that they have as much fun in the next week as possible. It's the last time they get to play with Salmon...maybe the last time with a lot of people. I say, while they're still an admittedly great team, they get out there and have fun, and play hard against the A's. Even in losing, I still have had a great week of baseball. I still know that we can have an impact on this postseason.

How much I owe you, Seitz?
All my picks this year were disastrous; I think the Angels came closest of anyone.

Things to come...
How long does Moreno let Stoneman rest before he makes him start pumping us up?
I am very much looking forward to this post-season. But before that, I'm looking forward to some very interesting games to close this out.
Here is to Salmon ending his career on a good note, and to seeing the organization hang his number and name where it belongs below the scoreboard!

I remember 86, , , ,
and it probably hurt me more than ya'll. . . why can't 04 (or 02 in Anaheim's case)just make you completely block that shit out.

Horrible season.
That's the bottom line.
Terrible hitting, terrible defense, terrible middle relief, and just no heart whatsoever, all season long.
Who cares if we beat Oakland this weekend?  I don't.  I have tickets for Wednesday and Friday night, I won't be using them.  They are exhibition games.
I'd like to see Tim Salmon get 300, but I don't really care.  It's 300, it's not 500.  And I don't have favorite players, I have favorite teams, and my favorite team was a big disappointment this year.

by bc56274 on Sep 26, 2006 10:19 PM PDT   0 recs

Hey now
Even though the ultimate goal should be the World Series, I don't want to write off the season as horrible all year. I don't want to sound like I'm happy for second...but I'm certainly not annoyed with this team in the least. The 2006 Angels had some definite problems, but when they were playing well they were spectacular. This year we got some great moments and some great new players that will impact the team next year. Cheer up, Charlie!

by RubixsQube on Sep 26, 2006 10:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Horrible season?
The team has won 85 games and could win 90 when it's all over.  How is that "horrible"?  Mediocre--perhaps.  Solid is more like it.  If you want horrible, then take a journey back to 2001.

by mheumann on Sep 26, 2006 10:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, horrible.
That's what it was.  Solid?  Are you kidding me?  It was a season covered in errors and pathetic hitting.  I wonder what our error to hit ratio was, I'll bet it was the highest in the majors.

Do I love the Angels?  Of course.

Will I be back next year?  Of course.

Was this a terrible season?  Horrifically so, yes.

by bc56274 on Sep 26, 2006 11:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Horrible? YES!!
I agree.  Yes our win total might be repsectable, but the frustrating part of it should be much higher.

We got ~90 wins with a horrible defense and a horrible offense.  Imagine how many more W's we would have if we had average D and O!

My second favorite team for today: Seattle Can they come through for us again?

by thrill000 on Sep 27, 2006 7:53 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Sorry, but no way
is this a horrible season.  I know horrible Angel seasons, and this one ain't it.  2001 was horrible.  2003 was horrible (to say nothing about almost the entire decade of the 90s, huge stretches of the 80s, etc).

If you think 2006 was a horrible season, then you started rooting for the Angels in 2004.

That is the kind of shit that makes 2002 so firggin' awesome!!! That's why this year is going to make next year taste that much sweeter!

Go..twins & Escobar. What the hell was that?
Escyballz must have changed his September routine last night... not sure if that included staying away from myspace hookers or spending hours upon hours with them before the game but whatever worked before he totally didn't do before today's start.  That was pathetic... I thought for sure if our rookies were bringing A games to the table this last week then surely Escobar would have been able to do it.

Fuck the Tigers for coming out of nowhere.

Fuck the Yankees.

Fuck the A'sses.

Lynch stoneyballz if he doesn't do anything in the off season.
