Ranking GMs

There has been a lot of Stoneman bashing sprinkled in with some praise over the last however long this site has been up (I am not particularly fond of him) - ESPN is is doing a SportsNation poll of GM rankings.  Where do you rank Stoneman compared to his competition?

http://sports.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/listranker?id=617

You can also get to it by going through ESPN's MLB section

Currently Stoneman is right in the middle of the pack at 14 according to the voting...

Smoke and Mirrors
The Billy Beane method...

Jocketty only at 7
Is a joke.  He is top 3 easily.  Look at all the significant trades this guy has made over the years to add to the core of his team.  Plus a WS title to boot.

Omar Minaya at #3 is way too high unless you count convincing the Met's owner to spend tons of dough as the major accomplishment of the GM.  I wouldn't say he's made many good long term trades or any savvy free agent signings.  Most of his significant moves have just been throwing huge dollars around.

Terry Ryan deserves to be higher as well, if Billy is at the top, Ryan should be right behind, but he just doesn't get the publicity.

Epstein and Cashman have huge budgets and they are getting too much of the credit in this poll.

Give Ryan, Jocketty or Beane, NYY, NYM or Red Sox money and they would put these other guys to shame.

The most underrated thing a GM can do
is spend a lot of money.  You say, sure, all he had to do was spend a wad, but on who?  Steve Phillips and Dan Duquette both did that, and neither of them were particularly successful.
Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.

FOXSports has Dayn Perry's rankings

I really don't like Perry but his summation of Stoneman pretty much says it all.

Perry is a clown
GMJ step number one in a plan for continued dominance, or step number one in a plan for severe weight loss through explosive vomiting?

typical straw poll BS
polls like these only serve to remind ESPN that most rabid baseball fans live in New York and Boston. this poll is tantamount to the all-star ballot. ho hum.
