Dick Schofield new hitting coach at Tempe?

Please tell me I misread this, but Schofield the new hitting coach?  Schofield with a .230 career avg, .308 OBP and .316 Slg.  You've got to be f'in kidding me.  What's next, Jose Canseco as the pitching coach, come on.  I'm perplexed, but relieved it's not at AAA.  I'm not exactly sure what the hitting coach at Tempe means however, is this just for spring training, or only when someone needs to go rehab at that facility?

From the Angels.mlb.com, solely to hit the 300 word requirement.

Dick Schofield, a 14-year Major League shortstop who played 10 seasons with the Angels, is the new hitting coach at Tempe, and Eric Owens, who played for the Angels in 2003, will handle the hitters at Cedar Rapids.

Vic Braden
was a damn good tennis coach in the day, but a terrible player.
Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.

Uh,,,
Since when did you have to be an all-star to be a good coach?

I never said All Star
I just said that it doesn't seem like a good idea to make a .230 career hitter a hitting coach.

It's true, some people are better coaches than players, it's just worry some to me given that we have not produced an impact bat from the farm system in a while.

I remember reading
Schoey's scouting report back in the day. He was "can't miss"--as a hitter. The quote was something like, "there's no question he'll hit, the issue is whether he'll stay at SS..." It was from Mazeroski's publication. As that prediction missed and missed and missed throughout the 80s, I learned the lesson to take scouting reports with a huge chunk of salt. Anyway...he used to know how to hit, maybe he can remember.

Dick
As mediocre as he was as a hitter, it was he that is responsible for one of my favorite all-time Angels moments - his game-winning grand slam to beat the Tigers in 1986.

You just reminded me...
Was that Angels-Tigers series the same one where Chet Lemon had a ball bounce off his noggin? Somehow that memory stays with me...

Different game
I was sitting in CF for the game where Lemon had the ball go off his head.  That was a complete blowout and can be found here - it was in 1984:

Fred Lynn lofted a ball to CF that Lemon lost in the sun - I remember hearing the thud from my seat.

The Schofield GWGS game was in 1986 and can be found here:

I really love RetroSheet!

Thanks jimmuscomp
I'm reminiscing on the glory days. Now, didn't Schofield have another GW homer that same week? It's another vague recall...

Don't forget...
Eric Owens will coach hitters at Cedar Rapids.  The low minor leagues - seems to me - to be the place that the organizational philosophy of hitting should be instilled.  So, having Schoefield and Owens teach our short-season and Rookie League kids seems to be problematic.

Of course, I don't think the organization HAS an offensive philosophy, so this may be a mute point.  But, I would think that successful major league hitters might have more to teach the Hank Congers of the world than light hitting shortstops or fourth outfielders.
