Scioscia Gets Props

ESPN's Jayson Stark hands out his post season awards and give's Scioscia a well deserved Manager of the Year award.

I think there is no doubt he does more actual managing than anyone else in the game, certainly the league.

Stark had this to say:

"Meanwhile, this year reminded us again that no manager makes a greater imprint on the on-field and off-field personality of his team than Scioscia. This team doesn't hit homers, doesn't walk, doesn't make the big trade, doesn't conform to all the trendy sabermetric trends of our time. Yet it's a team no one wants to deal with in October. That, too, is called managing."

It has its flaws but was very creative and presented some fun stats that nobody would have been aware of otherwise.

We don't "doesn't walk"

We were 9th in a league of 14, with 507 total. Average per team was 536, median was 522; we weren't that far off. Five of our regulars (Vlad, Willits, GMJ, Figgins, Napoli) walk more than once per 10 ABs; first time that's ever happened in the Scioscia era.

When you say "the Angels don't hit," you're not saying that they hit OK; you're saying they DO NOT HIT. Ditto for walks. I've seen the sentiment around everywhere.

Whatever; perception always lags reality. People in the national media still think this team is all about a great bullpen, Vladdy, and never taking a walk.

To be fair,

While Vlad's plate discipline did look better this year at times (though not down the stretch), his walks were more a function of IBB or pitching well around him then anything else.

Also, for the record, I still want to see him try to swing at a pitch that's intended to be a pitchout. It would be hilarious.
