Arod Slipping through our fingers

New York Post reporting that Dodgers are negotiating a buyout of Grady Little's contract... and will bring in Joe Torre.

I don't know about all of you, but I think if Torre becomes the next Dodgers skipper, that makes those bastards in blue the overwhelming favorites to land ARod.

Here's the link:

They can bat A Rod 8th!
I think it will be $ and not the manager that dictate where he goes.

Damned straight, skippy!
ARod and Boras did not just walk away from $70million in existing contract plus a probable $150 million extension and suffer under the financial follies of the McCourts, just so that they could follow Joe Torre.

If anything
Torre's donning of Dodger Blue would make Chavez Ravine a less likely destination for A-Rod.

As others have said, there is one thing and one thing only that motivates Bora$ clients, and that is the almighty dollar.  He does not represent players whose happiness can be measured by anything except money, and no player would hire Boras if he was willing to settle for anything less than top dollar.

by jjackflash on Oct 29, 2007 3:44 PM PDT   0 recs

Isn't that the point...
In business.  Getting top dollar for your services.  Your post seemed negative towards the guy.  Boras is great at what he does and good for the players, wish he could negotiate for me.

by Wytelitning on Oct 29, 2007 4:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

To an extent
For some people, though, it takes more than money to achieve happiness.  If I could get substantially the same salary to live and play in Detroit or Southern California, I'd pick SoCal in a heartbeat.  If we're talking about the difference between, say, $27 million annually and $32 million annually, well, that's "substantially the same," because I cannot even fathom spending all that money.  It's way more than any one person needs to live on, even living extravagantly.  Quality of life is important to some people.

The agent's job is to get the best deal possible.  For some people, best is not the same thing as "most money."  But when Boras is involved, I suspect that he tends to look out for his interest as much as those of his players.  Boras doesn't get 3% of "quality of life;" he only gets 3% of the money.

I wouldn't hire Boras.  There are a lot of other agents I could hire who could get me a ton of money if I had A-Rod's abilities, but who would also be willing to listen to what else is important to me (and who could be trusted to tell me about all the offers I'd received, not just the one for the most money).

by jjackflash on Oct 29, 2007 5:13 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know how these folks really think
but it seems to me there is a "worship factor" that figures into this somewhere. A big player like Kobe or Beckham with egos as big as their salaries enjoy the attention of being a star and the notoriety that their celebrity brings. There are stars that choose to live places where there is'nt alot of paparazi and tabloid newspapers, but most seem to like to be right in the thick of it. I think that "worship factor" plays to A-Rod's persona and could figure into him deciding on big market city like LA.

by 44FAN on Oct 29, 2007 6:21 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

huh?
its not like the dodgers are going after lou. its torre. a-rod and torre have no documented friendship. if anything, last year it was well documented that Torre wasnt standing up for a-rod and batted him 8th in the playoffs.

why does that make them the favorite again? not to mention that he wouldnt be able to DH in his later years? and the fact that the dodgers are a mess right now.

???

by ihearhowie2.0 on Oct 29, 2007 5:11 PM PDT   0 recs

I think....
because it appears that McCourt will be loosening the purse-strings for Torre means that he's willing to pay whatever it takes to get ARod...

I would love nothing more than ARod playing in Anaheim... but has Arte even expressed a desire to acquire him?

Mike Lowell is not the answer... he's a nice player, but he would be relied on to be the big bat behind Vlad... does everyone feel confident enough that he's that guy?

by nzach54 on Oct 29, 2007 6:13 PM PDT   0 recs

I don't believe..
That ARod enjoys Torre, despite previous reports. I personally feel ARod wants an AL team on the West Coast that's layed back and relax.

Like I said, Welcome to the Angels AROD. I love you.

by Obscurity on Oct 29, 2007 6:13 PM PDT   0 recs

I've experienced Boras "off the field"
 - My son and his daughter were in the same class in high school. He is not that bad of a guy. He even forked over $25K for a batting cage for the little league when the old mess broke down.

Yes, he is a ruthless competitor and #1 agent, but if A-Rod expressed "quality of life" issues, I think he would listen. Once he (and Sosh) shows A-Rod the QOL in Newport Beach, Rodriguez will have a tough decision to make, I assure you of that.

by SocalAngelFaninOC on Oct 29, 2007 6:25 PM PDT   0 recs

A-Rod will sign with the Cubs..
..and be reunited with Lou. The Cubs will then try and trade A-Ram for pitching.

I Don't Get You Guys......
...and the love affair with A-Rod. He's not the missing piece for the Angels. He wasn't for the Yankees, Rangers or Mariners. Based on what proven track record will A-Rod lead you to the championship? He's had quality players around him everywhere he's been, so it can't be that he didn't have enough help. Yes, he's amassed monster stats, but what has he won? Get a winner. Go ask Lowell what he wants and then agree to it.

by beercub on Oct 29, 2007 9:53 PM PDT   0 recs

By your logic
We should move Cabrera to 3rd Base and get Eckstein seeing as he has TWO rings - and as many WS MVPs as Lowell.

A-Rod has nevr been on a team wit even HALF the pitching staff that the Angels will have in 2008. Do the math.

Plus, by the way, Lowell is THREE years older than A-Rod. He had a good year with the best lineup protection in lineup protection history.

by Rev Halofan on Oct 29, 2007 10:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

By that logic
we need to ditch Vlad, and go out and grab Coco Crisp for our outfield.

First off.....
...you're putting words in my mouth. Second, if I were the Angels, I'd let one of the other teams be a sucker for A-Rod and then trade for who he might replace, as in Aramis Ramirez or David Wright. A-Rod is NOT a shortstop any longer.

ARod is a selfish prick....
Last night he didn't even show up for some Hank Aaron award, but instead made the night about him, and announced he wasn't happy making $25 million a year.

Do we want this selfish egomaniacal turd on our team?

I'm starting to think he could be a team cancer, and Peter Gammons agrees.

by bc56274 on Oct 29, 2007 10:57 PM PDT   0 recs

Gammons
Hmmm, not that he is biased against a yankee or someone stealing the spotlight from his Crud Sox...

How could A-Rod NOT be an egomaniac? Duh.

by Rev Halofan on Oct 29, 2007 11:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Peter Gammons, while being a homer,....
.....is the kind of guy that never says anything bad about anyone.  Barry Bonds, included.  When he rips someone, I listen.  Every team that gets rid of ARod has improved.  Look for the Yankees to win the World Series next year.

And you're right, he should have a huge ego, between April and September he is a great player.

by bc56274 on Oct 29, 2007 11:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

That pissy Gammons whine
was the shitz. Listening to him rail against ARod, and all I could think about was how, deep down, ol' Pete still wishes that baseball was about the New York Giants, the New York Yankees, and the Brooklyn Dodgers...

i agree
I wanted A-Rod until he decided to let Boras announce his opting out during the world series, he could at least have some decency.

I'd rather give Bonds a shot at DH (so long as he can keep his ego in check to play for a contender) for 1-2 years than give A-Rod one of those ludicrous deals, at least we wouldn't be mortgaging our future.

Mark my words, A-Rod will not be an Angel, Moreno won't bend over for Boras after getting burnt on prior deals with the guy (Weaver for 8 Million).

It's a shame we could really use him....
....but f-him.

Let's set our sights on Miguel Cabrera.  We can get him at two-thirds of the cost, and we'll have a younger guy, and someone that has produced in the playoffs.

Figgins for Cabrera, straight up.  Make it happen, Reagins.

Lol
I'll assume the trade proposal was a joke, which makes me "lawl".

But honestly, MCab will be an egomaniac on any club he plays with that has a decent fanbase. As well, at least I know ARod prepares himself everyday unlike MCab. He may be younger, but I'll trust the hard working attitude ARod brings as opposed to the "Im not gonna stay in shape" attitude of MCab.

by Obscurity on Oct 30, 2007 12:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

no!?
get out of town! a new england rooted sports writer was upset that the best player in the league stole the spotlight from the red sox?!

im sorry but i was rolling on the floor when they announced that durring the game. the sox can go to hell and peter gammons can go whine and cry all he wants.

And why does everyone talk like A-rod himself went and contacted the media? Scott Boras did so and said this morning on the radio that he regrets doing it and how it was poor timing.

i've never heard anything about a-rod being a bad teammate. he might not be a big clubhouse ra ra guy that everyone loves, but neither are a lot of stars. you guys probably wouldnt mind manny ramirez' production for his antics so why does a-rod, the best player of this generation get treated differently? if anything, his contract and playoff woes is what gets him such a bad rep. quit trying to talk yourself out of him.

as for the miguel cabrera talk, unless you want another 1st baseman or DH, forget it. the guy is already overweight and will break down with his poor work ethic. and youll be giving up adenhart and wood to even be in the neighborhood to trade for him. oh, and then his contract when u re-sign him wont be that far off A-rods

Find me one soundbite.  Just one.  Thanks.

Miguel Cabrera is a phenomenal talent, and is, what, 24?  Imagine him playing in front of a sellout crowd every night, instead of enough people you could cram into a large garage.

And don't blame Scott Boras for ARod's tackiness.  When you sign with the devil, the devil is inside of you.  I suppose it was Scott Boras' fault ARod was pounding the blonde stripper, too.

Look, it's easy to say go and get ARod.  The guy is a great hitter, I get that.  But at what cost do you say no?  If he wants $28M do you give it to him?  $30M?  $35M?  Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.

and I guarantee you another
he won't be cheap, and he won't last at third.

by bc56274 on Oct 30, 2007 11:20 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

what makes you certain
that he's only going to get 20 million? Soriano and Zito arent exactly young players and got 17-18. You dont think a 24 year old guy with his stats wont be getting more like 23-25 million a year? in this market? youre dreaming. a lot of big market teams in need of third basemen would drive his price well over 20, i can assure you that.

so the question is would i want a guy that just won the MVP at 32 for 28-30mil and will bring this team a looooot more return on that investment in terms of advertising and merch sales, or an already out of shape 24 year old who wont even be playing his position in 3 years for 23-25 million?

if this team wasnt already filled up with 1B/DH, this would be a different conversation.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Oct 30, 2007 11:38 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

When did I say I wouldn't?
I am just disagreeing with your contention that he is cheaper than A Rod.  He would be priced in the same ballpark, and is not the physical specimen that A Rod is.

He is the first player in history to start his career with 6 straight 300-30-100 seasons.  Or something along those lines.

Get of your high horses...
ARod's not a nice guy and an egomaniac who likes lots of money? WHO CARES? He's a great baseball player... period.

Trade for David Wright or Miguel Cabrera? That's a great thought. Those guys are pretty good. Not going to happen. I'd love Cabrera, but he's eating his way out of 3rd base and it will take a HELL of a lot more than just Figgins to get him... and there's no way David Wright gets traded by the Mets for anything less than the Messiah... and I don't mean a "savior"... I literally mean Jesus H. Christ

Good God... get a hold of yourselves

by nzach54 on Oct 29, 2007 11:29 PM PDT   0 recs

haha
love the line about Cabrera eating his way out of 3rd base, i was reading an article mid season about his weight problems and his lack of motivation to really get any better than he is.

He also had a career low .941 fielding percentage at third last year but he is a consistent offensive force. The question is would you sacrifice defense at the hot corner of all places for more offense?

The hot teams historically win
With the exception of this year, and by no means bagging on the Rockies, the hottest team at the end of the year will historically win it all. Unfortunately A-Rod hasn't had the luxory of playing for a hot team at the end of the year... and I mean an on fire team. He's still a tremendous talent that I would only dream of having play for my favorite club. This may sound crazy but please stay with me on this. Two free agents and a trade this off-season will do the trick. Expensive, but damn it would feel great to say my Angels are World Champs again.

C: Napoli in 100 games. Mathis in 60 games. They'll stay fresh and ready for the playoffs. Plus, both are young and cheap for their talent.
1st: Kotchman: He's young and he'll slowly build up his power. Gold glover caliber for years. Plus again, he comes cheap for his talent.
2nd: You're not going to find a younger, more talented, or at the price than you'll find a guy like Kendrick.
SS: Stay with OC till he retires. He's the heart and soul of our club.
3rd: If we can get him... yup you guessed it, A-Rod. His power for the fans, Vlad, and Sosh. The revenue he'll generate for the Angel brass. You can't look at this guy in what he's going to cost you. For the avergae fan, you can... but managament should also consider (And I'm sure they are) what he brings besides his talent.
LF: I'm mixed here and I'm probably dreaming Garret can stay healthy all year long but you have to have loyalty to a man who has given his career to one organization. You have to give him his due and leave him there. If he gets injured, you can always throw Willits in there. Why not Garret at DH? That will addressed below.
CF: GMJ. Defense and a solid stick. Not as your 4 through 6 hitter but a solid stick and I dare anyone to doubt his D. If you do, you're high.
RF: Vladdy can do it for a year or two more, that's it. DH after that. He is the Angels biggest draw bar none.
DH: This is where I'll lose most of you and I understand but why not give it a shot. Mr. Barry Lamar Bonds. Okay, imagine you're at a game and look to the scoreboard and you see your line-up like this:

  1. Howie Kendrick
  2. Orlando Cabrera
  3. Vladamir Guerrero
  4. Barry Bonds
  5. Alex Rodriguez
  6. Garret Anderson
  7. Casey Kotchman
  8. Mike Napoli
  9. Gary Matthews Jr.
Let that sink in for a minute......................
............................................................. It's kinda scary. How many pitches would Vlad see with Bonds behid him. How many people will intentionally walk Bonds with A-rod behind him? If you want to compete with the Red Sox, who I sadly admit, OWN US. This is what may need to happen. Wait! Where the hell is Chone Figgins?! Trade him now. He'll never duplicate last year ever again. He has maximized his trade value and the Angels need to act on it and now.

So the free agant signings are done and I told you we needed one trade. I introduce to you Johan Santana. Who WILL leave the Twins after next year anyway. Offer Figgins, Ervin Santana, Nick Adenhart, and Brandon Wood.

Your staff now looks like:

  1. Johan Santana
  2. John Lackey
  3. Kelvim Escobar
  4. Jared Weaver
  5. Joe Saunders
Not too shabby 1 through 5. I think that could stand up to the Red Sox.

Your bullpen is still solid with Bootcheck, Moseley, Oliver, Spier, Shields, and K-Rod. Bootcheck and Moseley are spot starters in the event of any injuries.

Your bench with 5 places left are Jeff Mathis, Reggie Willits, Kendry Morales, Erick Ayabar, and Rob Quinlan.

Money will be spent... but well spent. If you're concerned about the post season for A-Rod, know that Barry shows up all the time. Plus, with the walks that will happen... that equals base-runners... the runs will come, and it will come in bunches. And I think the staff and bullpen could hold things down in the event of an off night.

These three moves
could only happen in a corrupt fantasy league or on nintendo.

I will be surprised to get one of the three (Santana, A-Rod, or Bonds).  In fact, I'm not sure which of the three would most surprise me ... but I guarantee that we won't get all three.

Nintendo indeed
The lineup of Guerrero/Bonds/Rodriguez made me think of RBI Baseball on the old NES in All-Star mode.  Except then, it was the vaunted NL All-Star trio of Eric Davis, Kevin Mitchell and Andre Dawson, who all could mash on that game.

It would be fun to watch Vlad, Bonds and A-Rod strung together, though I think the best move would be to make a run at Johan Santana.

It's Arte's money
I actually like what you've proposed.  Arte would have to open his wallet (A LOT), but it could be done.

Scioscia himself has said that he would not be opposed to having Barry.

The package that you suggested for Johan would absolutely get accepted by the Twins - they would be fools not to take that.  That proposed package would fill many needs for Minnesota with legitimate major league talent.

You forgot Izturis on your bench, though.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/10/14/SPEKSP7LU.DTL&loc=interstitialskip

It's about half way down the page, but Scioscia doesn't seem to care about Mr. Bonds' attitude:

Asked if the Angels would be concerned about Bonds possibly being a distraction to clubhouse chemistry, Scioscia said, "Guys know Barry and the talent he brings. I don't think anything about that that would be an issue."

I say add Quinlan to the Deal to get Santana. What the hell does Quinlan bring to the table.....1st? NO thats what Kendry is there for.....OF? no thanks Rivera is way better and has POWER.

So kick Q off the bench and insert him into the trade and keep Rivera on the bench instead.

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why would the Twins want Quinlan?
I know he was a Golden Gopher back in the day, but...

Offering the Twins somebody we DON'T want is not going to get a deal done for Johan.

I do remember
The Twins inquiring about Quinlan a little while back but I think Sosh put his foot in and said he wanted to keep QBall
