Mariano Rivera to pursue Free Agency

According to the Rotoworld site:

While fellow free agent Jorge Posada wasn't ready to talk, Mariano Rivera indicated that he planned on testing the market as a free agent. "They had the opportunities and they didn't do nothing with me," he said, "so we'll see what happens. ... This is a business. Nothing against the New York Yankees."

So if we give Mo-Riv $10 million a year for 3 years, would it be wise to trade Frankie for something juicy?

Frankie is just ONE season away from free agency and looking for a big, big payday.

I don't like it
I think we can lock up Frankie for 4 years, $44 million. Rivera just worries me, too.

Rivera's shaky during the year as well
No.
ARod. It should be pretty apparent now Bill.

Stick with Frankie.
Let Mo go to the Senior Circuit.  Mets will sign him asap.

Bad Idea
Giving Mo $10 million means that's $10 million less that we can offer to ARod... stick with Frankie... he's still so young (turns 26 in January)

I would not...
pay Mariano $10 million per season and I would not pay K-Rod $10 million per season.

70 innings for $10 million?  Really?

Just not worth it.  I'd let him walk and find another closer on the cheap...

But that's me...

by jimmuscomp on Oct 9, 2007 8:54 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree
Frankie did not demonstrate that he deserves $10M per year.  I'd just as soon turn it over to Shields.

No to Shields as closer
I say if Frankie flees after next year we may have a situation where Ervin Santana becomes the best 2 inning closer ever.

Yikes....
Money aside... while Frankie may not be worth $10 million per season right now... I wouldn't make Shields the closer with a gun to my head. He's demonstrated the mental fortitude of a grade-schooler at times and should not become the closer under any circumstances.

yes
just to be different. i get the vibe that frankies leaving regardless.

seeing as theres no real sluggers at a position we need, trade route would probably be the best way to go about it. and i say this fully aware that adam dunn might be available. he sucks.

what about frankie and aybar for aramis ramirez or something? get the guy we wanted last year for what we all knew was less than what we would have given him. this, of course, is assuming the cubs sell their soul to the a-rod devil.

Mariano
Has 2 bad teams. If he is an Angel, that cancels 1. The other is Boston. Well, we suck against beanville anyways so he would fit in nicely.

by Zookeeper on Oct 9, 2007 10:35 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

really?
y'know, this years struggles aside, k-rod isn't anti-clutch. last season, he was lights out after the second half, this season he wasn't. he's only 26 and if he keeps this up, he's on his way to break the saves record.

i'd take k-rod over shields anyday. but i'm also a big k-rod fan so everything i say is tinged with bias.

keep k-rod!!!

No, no, no.
I meant I'd rather have Shields over Rivera.

Shields as a closer
has a much lighter workload
ARod. It should be pretty apparent now Bill.

walk year trade
It's not smart to dump 10% +/- payroll for a closer. Frankie's mechanics looks continually worse and with it his control. Soon he'll be Mitch Williams if he keeps it up.

NOOOOOO!!!
Closers are easy to find/make.  If Santana still has trouble as a starter he might turn out to be an awesome closer.

Rivera sucked, sucks and will continue to suck.

Captain, there are doubt's...

what
our most mentally weak pitcher would be our closer? i think id rather have joe borowski than santana closing.

Tell that to early 2000's Boston
Where was their closer?
ARod. It should be pretty apparent now Bill.

I'd go along with this...
Look at Early 2000's Eric Gagne... a shitty starter...  throw him in as your closer... freakin' NAILs...  not so much anymore... but those few years with the Dodgers, he was incredible.

If you could work on the mental part of the game with Santana...  he could be great... he has good stuff... just a matter of keeping his mind in the game.

Rivera sucked...?
OK, I hate the yanks as much as all of us red blooded halo fans, but Rivera was unhittable in the late 90's, early 2000's.  I'm far from a fan but his cutter meant game over for a solid 5-6 years.

He has come down to earth a bit but closers are like Running Backs in football.  They have a 5 year window of domination.  They can continue to be a solid contributor but never the same.

I dont want Rivera just like everyone else, but to say he "sucked, sucks..." is a bit shortsighted.

That was a perfect, level-headed analysis.

i would take shields as closer
he is not mentally weak he is just physically tired. If he only pitches 65-75 inning a year he should be fine.
That's if you call October, "the future"

He is not even a suitable setup guy

Neither were Kevin Gregg, Derrick Turnbow
Groom/teach the young fireballer Bootcheck the tools of the closer trade, then stand back ........

K-Rod has morphed into Guillermo Mota -- a 97 MPH arrow-straight dart thrower. Man Ram's shot is still hovering somewhere over New Hampshire.

If Kevin Gregg can go from middle relief
to saving 32 games for the Marlins, the Angels can find someone to close without having to spend $10 mil.
