We are not as deep as you may think.
I see a lot of talk about the Angels needs in the offseason and I agree with a lot of them.
# 1 - We need a regular 3rd Basemen.
# 2 - We need to protect Vlad. Hopefully 1 and 2 will go together. A-Rod or Cabrera are the obvious solutions.
# 3 - We need another starter.
I would prefer we trade for Miguel Cabrera (as stated in previous posts). Negotiate a deal with him ahead of time say for $13 - $16M per year. We would still have money to go after another starter and then we would be set.
So who do we trade? That is up for debate. I wouldn't mind a package of Adenhart, Wood and Figgins for Cabrera. The guy is only 24 and will hit 30+ HR for the next 7 or 8 years.
Some of you may not agree with me regarding the need for another starter, but here is our rotation as it stands now.
# 1 - John Lackey: Obviously no problem here.
# 2 - Jered Weaver: Again.. no problem
# 3 - Kelvim Escobar: Solid as can be.
# 4 - Ervin Santana: Huge question mark!
# 5 - Joe Saunders: Remains to be seen
Honorable mention: Moseley (spot starter at best). Adenhart (needs more time).
So what happens when Ervin can't pitch on the road or Joe Saunders struggles?
I agree we have a great trio of starters at the top, but would like to add a veteran who can eat innings at the end of the rotation. Kyle Lohse or Livan Hernandez would be nice.
Oh.. and the D-Rays are dangling Scott Kazmir. What about a package of K-Rod, Figgins and Wood?
Other FA options for the Angels:
Hunter.. who else?
