A-Rod Disinformation?

According to the NY Daily News:

Alex Rodriguez may be headed back to the Bronx after all -- but on the Yankees' terms.

Despite all of the back-and-forth posturing between the Yankees and A-Rod' camp, the Daily News learned today that the two sides have been discussing a deal for the past few days to keep the two-time MVP in pinstripes, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The biggest catch? The Yankees don't want agent Scott Boras involved in the negotiations.

A high-ranking Yankees source told the Daily News that the team is willing to bring Rodriguez back on a below-market contract, one that would make up for the $21 million subsidy from the Rangers that the Yanks lost when A-Rod opted out of the final three years of his contract.

In addition, the Yankees don't want to deal with Boras, who has been Rodriguez's agent since the slugger was 16 years old.

"We will not negotiate with Scott Boras," a Yankees source said. "He cannot be in the room."

The Yankees are also aware that Boras could convince Rodriguez to stop the talks. "We realize it could be a trap to get us back in the negotiations," said one Yankee official. "But we don't think that's the case."

Rodriguez apparently approached the Yankees through a third-party intermediary. "He went to them," said the source.

As the Daily News reported today, A-Rod will have to have person-to-person talks with the Steinbrenner brothers -- Hank and Hal -- before a deal can be sealed.

According to the first source, the Yankees are waiting for Mariano Rivera to sign a new contract before finalizing any plans with Rodriguez, who is expected to take a 10-year deal worth roughly $275 million. That would be about $75 million less than Boras has been looking for, though most industry insiders believe there was never going to be a $350 million offer out there for Rodriguez.

"Alex is going to be back with the Yankees," the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been made public. "The Yankees don't have a choice. How are they going to compete without Alex? They need him back."

After monitoring the third-base market, the Yankees apparently decided that Rodriguez was the best fit for them at third base. Mike Lowell is the only free agent of note, and his numbers were overwhelmingly better at Fenway Park last year than away from Boston.

Miguel Cabrera is the top name available on the trade market, but the Yankees were concerned about his work ethic and his habit of partying hard, something that dissuaded them from dealing for the talented 24-year-old slugger.

Rodriguez opted out of the final three years and $91 million of his contract on Oct. 28, prompting the Yankees to hold their stance that they would not negotiate with him as a free agent. The Yankees never even had a chance to make their offer, as Boras had told the Yankees it would take a minimum offer of 10 years and $350 million to get Rodriguez to meet with club officials face-to-face.

A second Yankees source said that the team believes A-Rod is trying to restore his image, which has taken a beating since Boras announced the opt-out during Game 4 of the World Series.

By taking a contract below market value, Rodriguez would be showing fans that it wasn't all about getting the most money, and that he truly wants to finish his career in pinstripes.

"Alex likes to be the center of the universe," the source said. "He wants to be a part of the Stadium going down and the opening of the new one. It's not about money. It's about his face being everywhere. This is the only stage that can guarantee that."

"Most of this is about Alex trying to salvage his image," said another source close to the negotiations. "He's upset over the way this whole thing has played out and the way he's being portrayed now, because of Boras."

OOPS........ Yes
It violates the basic agreement to exclude a players agent from negotiations.

I read this article
and I kind of get the feeling he is just trying to save face and that he has no real intention of going back to the Yanks.  Could be just a marketing ploy on his part to bring more teams to the auction.  Who knows, it's still speculation at this point.  I have to admit, it would be funny if Boras got ejected at the last minute and missed out on some percentages!

Its amazing...
to think about how good this guy is.  "He cannot be in the room." Hahahaha

If this is true then I continue to be impressed with Boras and his ability to negotiate.

Me-Rod
It's becoming more and more obvious that Boras overestimated how much money would be out there for the player.  Insurance restrictions make it very difficult to do super long term deals anymore, plus more and more teams are sick of them.

I always figured the Yankees would take A-Rod back at the same cost as their offer.  Just by opting out, he cost himself 21M of Texas money.

I still think the Angels could and should pay him more money and get it to him sooner.  But if the Royals offer him the most money, he'll go there.

I continue to think
That A-Rod wants to stick it to the NYY fans and the Steinbrenner clan, and that is why he is taunting them.

Trust me, Boras has shown A-Rod the land of Milk and Honey in Newport Beach, and that suits his and his family's lifestyle to a "T". He gets to play in our perfect climate 81 days a year in a Division he can thrive in, have fans who will appreciate and not Boo him, get advertising deals until he can't $tand the money, etc.

Did someone mention Hollywood???

C'mon
And A-Rod is secretly trying to give back his playoff bonus money too.

by 10 27 02 on Nov 14, 2007 10:30 AM PST reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised
if this is true.  Look at it this way: A-Rod knows he'll get paid a boatload of money, an obscene amount, really, wherever he winds up.  Perhaps, if his image actually matters to him, it has suddenly dawned on him that Scott Boras is not necessarily the best agent because he has a skewed view of his fiduciary obligations.  In seeking absolute top-dollar for his clients, without any other considerations, he's looking out for his own wallet as much as his client's.  In fact, his legal obligation is to put his client's interest above his own.  This could mean that it's better for a client to take slightly less money if the overall situation is more to his liking, but Boras would never do that because he'd take a smaller cut.

See, e.g., Jered Weaver ordering Boras to make a deal with the Angels because it was better for his career; Boras advised against it because it wasn't as good for Boras, even though it was better for the client.

Negotiating ploy
This is pure speculation, of course, but this makes double sense for A-Rod as a negotiating ploy -- he needs more than one suitor to start an auction, and his market value probably took a hit by his classless World Series trick. So if he's able to make at least half-amends, and signal to Borasphobes that he can be reasonable, then maybe reluctant teams (including the Yankees) will get in the ring, so that he & Boras can then begin driving the price back up.

This looks all the world like a re-calculation after a miscalculation. Maybe the fact that Arte didn't immediately offer 8/$240 at 12:01 AM on the first day of negotiations, and has allowed his minions to send out signals of indifference and/or Cabrera rumors, has spooked Boras. Or at least forced him to concoct a Plan B scenario somewhere around as threatening as the Angels trading for MigCab.

by mattwelch on Nov 14, 2007 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly what I was thinking
Without the Yankees in on the bidding, Arod's price goes way down.  No small / mid market team is going to make the Ranger's mistake of giving him an astronomical contract.  So, there are probably only 4-5 teams total that would even consider spending the kind of money it would take to sign ARod.  Given that, the Yankees are a huge piece of the negotiating puzzle.

by akathelorax @ Halos Heaven on Nov 14, 2007 11:23 AM PST up reply actions

Plus
If true, the Angels and Dodgers are very distracted by the Marlins and Miguel Cabrera, lowering ARod's value at the moment.

by Ty Webb on Nov 14, 2007 2:18 PM PST up reply actions

The Game
Its all part of the wheeling and dealing that only Boras can do. He has been so busy making sure who the head coach is at J.Serra H.S. and who the coaches are at UCI that he now has to get things brewing for ARod. The guy he has been agent for the last 15 years.
Don't forget that Boras got K.Malone and the Dodgers to bid against themselves for K.Brown. If the Yankees are not in the hunt that would have the price of ARod falling. Yankees can't let the Nation or the Angels sign him for less then what they had been told by Boras it would cost.
This article by the Daily News is a sign though. Shows how even though the fans may boo his ass from time to time they know that Doom is upon them should they not be able to hold onto ARod.

AROD will not negotiate without boras...
there is no way he will leave the guy out of the mix who is the reason he has the biggest contract in the history of the sport.

It's also on A-Rod's website:
After spending time with Cynthia and my family over these last few weeks, it became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization.

Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.

As a result, I reached out to the Yankees through mutual friends and conveyed that message. I also understand that I had to respond to certain Yankees concerns, and I was receptive and understanding of that situation.

Cynthia and I have since spoken directly with the Steinbrenner family. During these healthy discussions, both sides were able to share honest feelings and hopes with one another, and we expect to continue this dialogue with the Yankees over the next few days.

Are you kidding?
Or just that gullible. Does that sound like it was thought up, typed up by, and submitted my Alex? Does that scream baseball player to you?

Sure there are exceptions, Schilling, whom write well and are intelligent enough to write consistantly on their own in a fluid and thoughtful manner, but those players are often mentioned as such and brought to light.

This is 100% bullshit, we all know it, read it again and try to picture A-Rod at a computer typing this word for word, no imagine it with Boras sitting in front of a computer typing it and see which one is easier to swallow.

Although,
it is fun to imagine him calling Jeter on the cell:

Alex-

Derek-
"You know I always got your back."

Alex-
"Can you ask the Steinbrenners if they'll let me back in?  I just can't stand the thought of playing without you, man."

Derek-
"Me too, bro.  Me too."

It's pretty obvious what's going on:
PayRod isn't receiving $300 million contract offers like he was hoping, and is now scrambling back to baseball's version of Fort Knox.

I really hope the Yankees take him back - because if they don't, they are going to be winning the World Series next year.  Cutting bait with this egomaniacal prick is the best addition by subtraction formula in baseball.

by bc56274 on Nov 14, 2007 3:11 PM PST reply actions

What "discount" are they talking about?
"By taking a contract below market value, Rodriguez would be showing fans that it wasn't all about getting the most money, and that he truly wants to finish his career in pinstripes."

--------------------

What the fuck does this even mean?  A-Rod is on the verge of signing a $275 million, ten-year contract, thus exceeding the $250 million, ten-year deal of his that previously was the largest in sports history.  It also is more money and more years than the Yankees reportedly offered in October ($231 million for 8 years if I recall).

It is incredible to me that anyone can have a straight fact and refer to this as a discount or "below market value" contract.  What a joke.  Just shows how good Boras really is at his job.

I'm sorry for this analogy
In Pro Wrestling they do their best to con you to think that something is going to happen, when it doesn't.  And I'm not even talking about the show in the ring.

For example, a certain wrestler will be appearing on TV next week.  But for weeks, the performer has acted oblivious when asked by fans and media outlets.  The Television show only hints, but never says who its going to be.  It's all a WORK.  To pull one over the fans.

I think that is going on here.  A-Rod and Borras are working the Baseball fans.  At least that is what I am hoping for.
