Arte: We had a deal twice for Cabrera
Interesting read. Arte says that twice he said they reached an agreement on players to send for Cabrera but the marlins backed off and said no, asking for more.
He says the Dodgers had the same thing happen to them. Makes sense, Colletti was in the LA times last week saying they thought they had a deal in place but the other team got "cold feet"
Needless to say, we're gonna be paying heavy if we get him and the Dodgers DEFINITELY arent out of it.

No reason to break the bank!
Arte's posturing (as well as speaking candidly). He's basically saying F-U to FLA which will drive the price down.

I really liked these articles --
He calmly addresses the pieces involved in a Cabrera deal, his philosophy regarding budgets, and even Stoney's limited game plan in pursuing Soriano last year.
Basically alluding to the
"We got so fond of one player, and then the market moved away from us," [Moreno] said, referring to the Angels' pursuit last winter of free agent Alfonso Soriano, who signed with the Chicago Cubs.

"We got so focused on one player, the market moved away from us," said Moreno, referring to former GM Bill Stoneman's attempts to sign free agents Paul Konerko and Alfonso Soriano, in particular, the past two winters. "We focused so hard on one player the last couple years and came up empty."

"We're talking about a lot of players," Moreno said. "What's happened to us a couple of times the last few years, is we really zeroed in on a couple of players and didn't get it done."
So this offseason, they are not waiting around, trying to woo a Paul Konerko or an Alfonso Soriano with so much affection there's no one left to love when they move on.

Think I'm changing Reagins' nickname from Stoney's Tony to a very strong Italian Tony Scioscia.

I would suspect the demotion is still very much worth the new palace in Newport...
If Torii Hunter were in Matthews' spikes, and his team signed another center fielder to the richest contract in franchise history, pushing him to the corner outfield spots, he wouldn't be pleased.
"Gary is one of my favorite guys. I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. He's a great person, and there's no way we're going to bump heads on this. If something were to go down [between us] we would clean it up right away. That's the kind of people we are."
Also, Arte says Names will be named --
Moreno said he does not know if Selig will discipline players who are named in the Mitchell report and insisted that there was "zero relationship" between the possibility that Matthews, a center fielder who will now move to a corner outfield position, could be suspended and the acquisition of Hunter, a Gold Glove center fielder.
Deeg's workin' overtime this evenin'
"A lot of people are fishing for it, but there is no animosity, no jealousy at all," Hunter said. "I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. If something were to go down, we would clean it up right away. Gary said as long as we win and get that ring, it doesn't matter."
Sorry about this, but at least it's not a Diary. Also, anyone go to school with Sleepy Jon Garland?
No, but...
personally
then with the surplus of outfielders, maybe flip willits or rivera to san diego for some relief or a prospect.
the cabrera deal is clearly going to be us getting robbed or nothing.

That the two teams most interested and best equipped to acquire Cabrera are intrastate rivals is happenstance. One industry source in contact with the Marlins said both Los Angeles teams know exactly what they have to give up to land Cabrera.
The one that does so first, presumably by adding the fourth piece, will get him.

Larry Beinfest, the Marlins' president of baseball operations, refused to address the comments made by Moreno, saying, "We do not comment on trades or trade rumors."

Angels Stov'aholism
This is sorta funny, buried in a Johan Santana/Red Sox article from twincities.com. I'm reading this yet hearing this site's fave Quinihana's Minnesota accent as if in Text-to-Speech.
Robb Quinlan of St. Paul, a utility player for the Los Angeles Angels, was surprised when the Angels signed former Twins outfielder Torii Hunter last week.
"Very surprised; I had no idea," Quinlan said. "It was Thanksgiving morning, and I'm just rolling out of bed and my family's calling, other people are calling. The phone's ringing off the hook, and I'm thinking, 'What's going on?'
"All of a sudden, I'm hearing, 'Torii Hunter, Torii Hunter, Torii Hunter signed with the Angels,' and I'm saying, 'C'mon, I know you guys are joking.' "
Quinlan, naturally, is excited about the acquisition.
"What a great pickup for us," he said. "We won 95 games last season without Torii Hunter, and we got (pitcher) Jon Garland from the White Sox, too. And, honestly, I don't think we're done. I think we're going to make a good run at Miguel Cabrera from the Marlins or Miguel Tejada from the Orioles. This is definitely a good offseason for the Angels."
Isn't that funny
One says the Marlins don't comment and the other is a comment attributed to the Marlins. One of them must not be accurate and I think that Larry Beinfest is the one full of shit. They have been using the media to create a bidding war from day 1.
