Rory Markas Promoted to 75 TV Games

GREAT News: Rory Markas will be calling 75 Angel Games on television.

Bad News: Rory will be paired with Mark "Change The Eye Level" Gubicza on those TeeVee casts.

Worse News: Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler will be doing Angel radio broadcasts when Rory is on the tube.

But Good News: Jose Mota demoted back to in-game and post-game analysis spots and not play by play.

Bad News: Terry Smith gets the squeeze - 87 games of sharing the radio mike with Rory and 75 games of being the 3rd banana on the Hud 'n Phiz show... Poor Terry.

I think Terry

Smith might have to become bipolar just to get through the season. What a contrast in style, intelligence, etc. he is going to have to endure by going back and forth between this setup.

The bottom line is that all of this is a better setup than last year by a pretty large margin.

It also might just be a stepping stone to an all-Rory and somebody else TV season in 2009. Let's hope.

I'd go along with this.. I like Rex's goofiness, and homerism. Add in Rory's excellent play by play, and i'm in!

I agree completely about the dry wit comment. Those two are fantastic together. It's a rare game listening to them when I don't laugh out loud at least once or twice.

I don't notice that

as a habitual thing Terry does (drawing out the pitch identification, that is), but there is one ump in particular that both he and Rory complain about for his delayed calls, and that one ump tends to throw Terry for a loop. As a rule, however, I find him quite a competent play-by-play guy.

I definitely agree about the dry wit. Rory likes to nudge Terry for his obsessive use of the same phraseology all the time ("I have it on good authority, Terry, that in tonight's postgame Angel Talk you'll be reserving a special place for first-time callers.") Terry takes it with equanimity, then turns around and makes a remark about Rory's cats or something.

How will anyone understand what Hudler is talking about. Hard enough when your watching and listening to him. Now we will be forced to listen to him explain what just happened. To have Dick and Don back or maybe Bob and Ron or anything but Rex on Radio.

With mlb.tv I'm usually stuck with Phys/Hud, so I'll assume anything is better than them.

I'd listen to radio broadcasts, but they're out of sync with video -- would be nice if mlb could sync them, b/c I'd listen to Rory/Terry all the time with audio on video feed muted.

Most mlb.tv feeds never seem to use Angels, so I get stuck with obnoxious announcer like Hawk Harrelson (Chisox)... But no more Mota, yay! HE GAWN!!!

I prefer games on the radio and I liked Terry and Rory. I do buy MLB-TV, but the radio broadcasts are about 10-15 seconds behind the TV brodcasts so it doesn't work to watch on MLB-TV and listen on the radio. I guess there is always Gameday.

Overall....Good

I think overall that this is a pretty good scenario. I am for anything that limits the amount of time I have to hear "Guererrrrrrro" and, hopefully, "Cabrerrrrrrrra".

However, it's a bummer that Terry Smith is getting the shaft.

By the way....

In that article on another thread, a link from the SGVTribune, it says that the games will be broadcast on KCAL. Does anyone know if there is an agreement backing this up? I did a couple of searches, but could not find anything. Also, are we assuming that they are making the switch to 830 AM?

I'm sure

it's just carelessness/inattentiveness by the article's author. The Angels' current TV deal is with FSN & Channel 13. The Dodgers' deal is with KCAL 9. The writer presumably remembered that the Angels used to be there, but forgot about the switch.

Physioc will spend 15 minutes talking about the 2004 Red Sox, to be interrupted only by the third out. This is bad enough on TV, but will be intolerable on radio.

They should leave Rory on radio, fire Physioc, and bring in a TV pro.

About Time

You're right on. Phys is terrible, and when I say terrible, I mean unlistenable. Rex is Rex. You know what you're going to get out of him- nonsense, stories about the "far east," and homerism that makes steve hartman cringe - but his enthusiasm is genuine and he's the wonder dog.

Rory and Terry are great. Terry has grown on me and I actually think he is one of the best in the biz now. I listen to a ton of games on mlb audio and we are pretty lucky. There are some AWFUL announcers around the league. John and Suzyn anyone? Steiner? Not everyone can have a Uecker, so Im pretty happy with our lot, sans Phys. God he's terrible. How about his dye job?
