Miguel Cabrera to the Angels?
If A-Rod goes to a higher bidder, The Chronicler sees a lot of plusses in trading a big package of players to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Miguel Cabrera.
Read it, he almost convinced me!

He's FAT
I like a trade for him IF and ONLY IF we don't have to trade Santana, and if he is CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED to get his ass in shape.
Weight Clause
Miggy is headed to the sack
Pass on him.
Second prize
I'd still do it, but I'd overpay for Arod first.

From MLB Trade Rumors
That would probably be fair to both sides... but I don't think I'm willing to give up that much, unless they throw Willis into the package. (Maybe we could add Murphy or Willits.)
If we got rid of BWood, I see OC resigning with us -- I would definitely re-sign him. But I am definitely not sold on Migbrera yet...
I'd prefer to throw some money at A-Rod first... we can afford money, but not prospects.

So, in essence, I vote for D-Mac... j/k, but it would be nice to see him show up one of these days :)

McPherson!!!!!
Sometimes I wonder, with your infatuation
If so, I have to say, Bill, please learn how to use punctuation.
no thanks
but vlad will obviously be a DH by then and we have kotchman.
so whats the perk to cabrera over a-rod. the offense is comparable albeit MC will be younger and (presumably) able to do it for more years.
but is a fat cabrera with bad work ethic at 28 going to be any better than a motivated rodriguez at 36?
the thing is that when rodriguez is old enough to move to DH, vlad will unfortunately be gone most likely. i just dont see cabrera's offense in itself being worth our future pitching, best run scorer and best potential.
i would, however, trade all of that for a-rod and we dont even have to.
Cabrera is a great hitter
He could DH, but that needs to be Vlad's position next year
A-Rod just makes tons more sense
From Ken Rosenthal:
The Marlins are insisting that the Angels include second baseman Howie Kendrick, sources say. The Angels almost certainly would prefer to part with less established players. Third baseman Brandon Wood would be a strong possibility, and the Angels also could satisfy the Marlins' needs for a young catcher and young pitching."
DO NOT TRADE HOWIE
I'm sorry - let me be more articulate...
I actually can't say that I would too upset to trade Wood, Santana, and Mathis for Cabrerra. You would just hope that a team with a stronger veteran precense and strong manager will help steer his conditioning to an acceptable level.
But just in case the cheap sheats couldn't hear..
DO NOT TRADE HOWIE!
I say its a dead deal then
Make it two for three, with Dontrelle, and a little cash , maybe.
GET AROD
Just say no to $30+ mil
kendrick
still rather make a trade for this fatass?

No, Not Howie!
Maybe he'll have to play Vlad $20 mil when he extends him, but so what. It's the cost of doing business.

yes but
cabrera is a special player...
Cabrera is a "special" player
Seriously... I agree. Playing in such a crappy environment, who wouldn't go crazy on their health and uncontrollable eating...?

no.
in the words of will smith: "aw, hell no."
No, no, no, no, no, no!
GOD PLEASE LET HOWIE KENDRICK STAY!!!!!!!!!
Won't spending that money on A-rod
Everyone
You seem to think that the Angels shouldn't spend money to shore up the one position that really needs shoring up. Instead, you seem to be of the opinion that the Angels should trade their young and inexpensive players and acquire MORE expensive players, and ultimately create MORE holes that have to be filled with MORE expensive players. It just doesn't make any sense.
It will cost something to make the team better; I'm trying to understand why it's better if it costs the team money and players (the trade scenario), as opposed to just money.
A lot of money came off the books this year. True, there are raises due to some of the younger players, but remember that money also comes off the books next year when GA's contract is up.
Unless you want them to become the Florida Marlins, there are always going to be SOME big contracts. They key is to maintain the farm system so that MOST of the roster can be replenished from within, and getting outside help to fill in the holes.
There's a difference between
My position has been consistent: A-Rod's price tag is too high for a guy who has not demonstrated an ability to significantly improve a team's win totals and has not shown any leadership abilities in the clubhouse.
Crazy
That's like saying that the sun hasn't demonstrated any ability to contribute to photosynthesis.
you're missing the point.
Exactly....
They we absolutely more "clutch" during those postseason.
USA Today's Friday A-Rod Update
"One GM said the Giants might give A-Rod between eight and 10 years, but only at a little over $20 million a season. Another predicted the Angels would go as high as $28 million for eight years but would include an opt-out option after six years.
"None expect A-Rod's new deal to average $30 million a year . . . ."

i personally think..
right, there's just as much...
Mike Scioscia Inteview
an interesting thread in the...
Keith Law
Mike (San Francisco): The L.A. times is reporting the Marlines want Kendrick, Adenhart & Wood for Cabrera. Is that a good idea for the Angels? It seems like that's a lot for a soon to be DH who will cost at least $20 million a year in 2 years.
Keith Law: That's a bad idea for the Angels, not a terrible one. I think the next five years of Kendrick are worth more than the next two years of Cabrera, a lot more when you figure in the cost. You can trade average players/prospects for a star, but trading a young soon-to-be-star for another star, plus throwing two prospects in the deal? Anyway, I don't see that as likely.
Maicer Izturis?
"Should the Marlins acquire Kendrick, that could mean a position switch for Dan Uggla, an All-Star second baseman in 2006 who could be asked to switch to third base. It's also believed that Florida also will seek Angels infielder Maicer Izturis as part of a trade package."
