Onto Plan............

Now that plans A-C have come and gone, what are the Angels going to do now for a power hitting 3rd Baseman.  I know we all have some good suggestions.  Is Figgins once again the man, does Brandon Wood come into the picture ?  That would mean plan D and E.  Well, let the games begin.

Aramis Ramirez...
Im just kidding, don't think that'll work out

by Obscurity on Dec 13, 2007 5:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't give up on that thought
just yet.  It could happen.

Somewhere I read the Cubs were interested in Figgins, and that they are very disapponted in their closer.  Also, many Cubs fans are very tired of ARamirez.  If we somehow got Joe Nathan, we wouldn't need KRod........both Figgins and KRod are free agents after next season, prime time for trades.

Aramis Ramirez
is the best option out there considering our various surpluses (lead off hitter, outfield, pitching) are the cubs deficits.  Also he is a terrific player that would put that "fear" factor into other teams/pitchers knowing they have to go through two elite bats.

I also think other than that we shouldn't do anything.  Last year we were very unfortunate with our team very injured against a healthy Red Sox team.  I truly believe we would have at least given the red sox a tough fight if GA, Vlad, and several other key players weren't injured.  We now have more depth and a better ability to make it through that many injuries in the post season. Although even if we got M-cab having Vlad, GA, and Torii Hunter injured would make it very hard to win in the playoffs.

We did poorly against a non healthy Red Sox team..
David Ortiz killed us as always. But he did have a slight tear in his meniscus. Apparently, it restricted the way you swung the bat... I wouldn't guessed it by the way he pummled Weavers pitch in game 3.

how about......
Edwin Encarnacion? I like the idea.

It wont happen
first of all the kid is troubled like a little Jose Gillen and im sure the reds want a lot more than we are willing to give up for him.  Also they are trying to use him to get players like Bedard and Santana from whats been said on mlbtraderumors.com

I have a feeling
That the big move we were all anticipating won't come.  My bet is that Reagin will pull a Stoneman and trade off Wilits or Rivera for an inconsequential reliever.

I know its early, but thats just my feeling.  I hope he proves me wrong.

i dont get
why we need a power hitting third baseman. didnt we just add a 25 home run center fielder?

we get more power production out of center field and the DH this year, so 3rd base doesnt matter. figgins has to play somewhere and hes our best leadoff guy that will start and get things going.

dont anticipate any more trades. why force it? wait til next year and see if theres options that are worth it.

Because
The SS slugs .400, the 2Bman has unproven power, the 1Bman hasn't found his home run stroke yet, and the corners are likely to be manned by the very average Garret Anderson and Gary Matthews.

We're good now!
I think HR production is in an upswing with Mathis/Napoli/Kendrick/Kotchman/Morales......Not to mention a should-be-healthy Johnny Rivers, GA, Vlad, GMJ. And we fixed the back end of the rotation that completely drove me crazy with the fatolo/voodoo combo...that was a roller coaster ride! With the addition of Garland (which i've admired in the league), he should win atleast 15 games facing every teams #5 guy (are you kidding me?? he's sick in the #5 slot!!). If we won 94 games last season we should easily add 4 games to this years team......Any comments?????
If I hear the word "red sox"...POW!!! RIGHT IN THE KISSER!!!

We are good enough to win the West.
Reason:  Rev says Seattle, Texas, and Oakland all suck..

I don't think we've upgraded enough, if at all, to go much further than that.

07 playoff roster vs. 08
2007 playoffs vs. 2008 OD as it currently stands

Figgins RF  - Figgins 3b
Cabrera SS  - Aybar SS
Guerrero DH - Guerrero DH
Anderson LF - Anderson LF
Izturis 3b  - Matthews RF
Kotchman 1b - Kotchman 1b
Kendrick 2b - Kendrick 2b
Napoli C -    Napoli C
Wilits CF -   Hunter CF

Kotchman, Kendrick and Napoli should be slightly better than last year.  Figgins should be slightly worse as he reverts to the mean.  I would expect Anderson to be much worse than last year.  Guerrero should be about the same.  Aybar vs. Cabrera is a clear downgrade at ss.  Matthews vs. Izturis is probably a push.  Torii vs. Wilits is a clear upgrade.

Overall, I don't think our 2008 starting lineup is much better than what we fielded against Boston in the division series.  Our top three pitchers are still the same guys.  Basically, if we fielded this team again in the DS vs. Boston, we'd probably get the same result.

Well said.
We will probably win 91-96 games, make the playoffs assuming none of the other teams in our division have a phenomenal season, and bow out shortly thereafter.

Put Aybar
on the bench.

Start Izzy at SS - that will help a lot, actually.

Aybar is a AAA hitter and baserunner - Izzy is a league average player - Aybar too is league average - Texas League Average.
