Something to Think About...

Wouldn't that be about a bitch to see Dallas McPherson sign with the Marlins and then start mashing like his name is Miguel?

Just saw that the Marlin's were interested over on Pro Sports Daily.

Nothing new going on in Halo territory so just thought I'd throw that one out there.

Also since this has to be 300 characters...I don't mind Chone Figgins as our 3rd baseman.  '06 was his only bad year and he sets the table nicely.  We could do a lot worse.  Just would like to see the outfield logjam loosen up for a bit of relief help maybe. Blah blah blah blah...there!

It will piss me off if anyone signs the D-Mac
We invested lots of time on him and now we are just letting him go. He already said he wants to repay us for being sticking with him. What else do we want him to do. Hit 30+ HRs? They must sign him in order for that to happen!!!!!
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mac 'n Cheese
Sosh doesn't like D-Mac. He views him as frailty and even though he has (had) pop, thinks he would be taking valuable space on the roster.

Besides, he has a lovefest with "Anywhere" Aybar, and we need that extra roster spot.

Why do folks keep saying this?
re: "he has a lovefest with "Anywhere" Aybar"

Has Scioscia said as much?

I understand that Aybar has made mistakes, but Scioscia's been critical of Aybar's baserunning blunders.  And Erick is only 23. As far as I can tell he's the 2nd youngest on the roster (behind BWood acc to espn).

How quickly should we turn on a kid who was once considered one of the organization's best prospects?

See: playing time, Aybar, E.
He has played Aybar before a better option in Izturis much of 2007, until Izturis essentially forced Scoscia's hand by being incredibly clutch.

evidence?
I'm not arguing that Izzy isn't the better option. I'm also not convinced that Scioscia believes it's Aybar first.

If memory serves, this whole "Scioscia has a man-crush on Aybar" meme started with a post on this site circa 7/1/2007.  On that date, Izturis had an average that was a mere 8 points better than Aybar's & Izturis had one less rbi (albeit w/62 fewer at-bats).  But Aybar saw very little playing time the rest of the year -- a mere 38 add'l ABs.  This is about the time Izzy began to flower. He returned 7/3/07 from a ribcage injury (injuries kept him out most of May & June) & he saw significant playing time the remainder of the year -- an additional 242 ABs.

So where's the evidence that Scioscia (still) has this Aybar lovefest?

2007 Statistics (opening day through June 30, 2007)
BATTERS AVG OB% AB HR RBI SB
Izturis .245 .298 94 1 14 2
Aybar .237 .281 156 0 15 2

How about this statement?
From CBS Sportsline, though I'd read it before in the LA Times and couldn't find it again, mid November:

"Orlando brought a presence on the field," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We're very confident with what Erick brings not only in the future, but now, and what Maicer brings. You have to give to get, and Orlando was the piece they wanted."

Aybar is #1 in Scioscia's mind.  I hope that spring training changes that, but as of now, this is where we're at.

Fair enough, but ..
I don't think everyone interprets Scioscia's comment the way you do. Others here have suggested he was hyping Aybar's trade value.  Or maybe S was simply acting Pollyanna to the press. Dunno.  Seems to me he was just stating what he felt was obvious: "We'll be fine with Aybar & Maicer."

I can't read minds, but I can look at roster decisions.  2007 tells me Scioscia is inclined to use Maicer first.

But maybe he's said something more definitive.  Anyone?

It's probably just the pessimist in me
So yeah, I can see how you'd think that.  I'm not saying it's black and white, just that the preference is slightly tilted towards Aybar, when it should be tilted heavily in Maicer's favor.

Many, many times last year
Sosh would pinch-hit Aybar in crucial situations when there were better options on the bench (i.e., everyone), or pinch-run him instead of guys like Nathan Haynes or Reggie Willits.

Aybar mancrush
Game 1, 8th inning, down 4-0 to Beckett with 1 out and Howie on 1st.

Aybar pinch hits for Napoli.  It was a situation where we needed baserunners in any way possible, does anybody think Aybar is better at getting on base than the Napster?  Especially since Aybar didn't hit righthanders at all.

Still, a platoon might work out:

Izzy  .282 vs right .236 vs left
Aybar .222 vs right .296 vs left

Small sample size for Aybar, but worth a try.

mancrush = hyperbole
A handful of bad decisions don't equate to a mancrush.  76% of his Aybar's 156 ABs took place before July 1st -- before Maicer got healthy & hot.  Much of Aybar's service came when others were injured.  Providing opportunities to a young, highly-touted prospect seems like sound business practice -- not an irrational emotional investment.

Don't get me wrong -- I've no Aybarcrush.  I cringe watching him run the bases.  And you're right, Rallymonkey; that was a godawful call.  But I'm not sure I'm ready to give up on him.  Yet.

I'll ask again: at what point should we label this once-hot prospect a lost cause?  Should one of the youngest, most inexperienced players on the team see occasional service time or does he no longer have value?

Why do we need D-Mac?
I mean he hits lefthanded and has power and can play 3B.

We still have ...
or ....
no I know .....!

Oh poop.

i don't get the Dallas infatuation
the dude is an ok player when he's healthy, but he can't stay healthy. meanwhile, guys like maicer izturis contribute more to the team than dallas ever has, and yet everyone here is going bananas about losing a fragile player whose long-term contribution is dubious at best.

I don't get the fussing
McPherson was worthless to this franchise.  How long exactly were we supposed to wait for him to live up to expectations?  I'm happy to do away with the uncertainty and just move on.  As Jerry Maguire said with prospects, sometimes they pop, sometimes they don't.  McPherson, I think it's safe to say, never popped.

by DChalofan on Dec 17, 2007 11:00 AM PST reply actions

Well he just got the back surgery
After a misdiagnosed problem and a failed rehab.  We may want to what he has got now that the back is not a problem.

But I am sure you think Quinlan is worth a roster spot.

Um.........

by hauldog on Dec 17, 2007 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

No Way
I'd definately take McPherson over Quinlan.  With Morales, there is no need for Q.

by Monkeyspanked on Dec 17, 2007 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

That is my point
Q is worthless IMO.  DMac getting cut couldn't of been about the roster spot.
Um.........

by hauldog on Dec 18, 2007 12:01 AM PST up reply actions

They are equally worthless
I'd be happy to be done with both of them....
