M's Sign Carlos Silva

When angels fans think we have had a bad off season just remember that the mariners are our main competition for the AL West next year (doesn't that cheer you up? lol).

The mariners, a team that has lost Jose Guillen (one of their best players last year) and had not picked up any one till now, has just signed Carlos Silva to a 4 year contract at 11mil per year.

While the angels were out shopping for the top players in baseball, the Mariners were trying to sign pitchers.  They missed out on Dan Haren, they missed out on Erik Bedard (not over yet though), they missed out on Hiroki Kuroda, and now they have to settle with Plan D in over paying Carlos Silva.

When you feel bad about the Angels "only" getting Jon Garland and Torii Hunter and missing out on M-cab, just remember our biggest competition is paying 11mil a year for a 4th starter at best who's 162 career avg has him striking out 69 players per season lol.

L I N K -to- S T O R Y

Oh and just to note, the Twins wouldn't even pay 4 mil for this guy (that was their contractual option cost).

innings eater
plain and simple. If he keeps them relatively in the game, thats all they want.

ya hes pricey, but who isnt anymore? we're paying $28 million for two 32 year old center fielders so im gonna withhold my laughs until we destroy silva this season.

It's all about the Rangers.
In 2006 the M's bent over and grabbed their ankles for the A's and gave them the season series by a wide margin, allowing the A's to nip the Halos for the division title.

In 2007 the M's did the same for the Halos, turning the tide against the A's.

In 2008, the Rangers are up to bat. Look at Silva's ERA career splits against the Rangers.

Silva
He's 3-1 against the Angels since 2005 with a 4.91 ERA and we're hitting .312 against him. We actually hit him well.

Regardless what he's doing against us, he's mediocre. He only averages 3 K's per 9 innings, which means he's going to allow A LOT of hits.

I am ecstatic the M's signed him.

The best part
Is reading the sheer disgust of the M's fans over at LL.  They really, really hate this signing, and I can't blame them.

I, for one, really appreciate Seattle's effort to overpay to be mediocre.

Get M-Cab, try to save the Howie.

thats what worries me
last year when the mariners fans were wanting to kill themselves, they had a great year. They hate this signing, so naturally silva is winning 19 games this year.

I wouldn't throw off on the signing if I were you.
Silva is obviously a quality pitcher.  $11MM/year is pay for a quality pitcher these days.  If I'm not mistaken, we're paying Jon Garland $12MM for 2008 plus the $1.5MM cash we paid in the trade.....that's $13.5MM.

Bavasi obviously did what he could in an effort to keep up with the Joneses (Angels).

Many here were ecstatic enough over getting Garland that you felt we could trade away Santana or Saunders.  I see Garland simply as a replacement for Colon.....insurance.

Check last years stats for Silva and Garland.  Apparantly, Silva is even more of a ground ball pitcher than Garland.  I don't see a lot of other differences.

garland is out of silva's league
Garland has had to play his entire career in a top 10 hitters park while Silva has had the luxury of pitching in a top 5 pitchers park.  So the numbers are all slanted to begin with.

I would say more but I just finished my last final and am running on 6 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours.

key difference
is that the Angels aren't bound to Garland beyond 2008.
