ya
i dont think this is new information to anybody here.

vlad has an option for 2009 and will be extended without question. As will lackey.

GA will be gone and Frankies the only question mark.

garland probably gone, as will juan.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 20, 2007 3:29 PM PST   0 recs

Any chance
that if Garret performs like he did in '07 that they buy him out and then re-sign him to a one year contract?  I'd love to see him finish his career with the Angels.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Dec 20, 2007 4:26 PM PST   0 recs

yeah
it would be a classic angels move, but reagins seems to be a lot diff, garret did great last year so im hoping we see more of the same

God, I hope not.
GA needs to be gone yesterday.  He is probably going to be brutal in 2008 - I can't even imagine 2009.

Here's to hoping that the Halos sign Rivera for two or three years at $5 to $7 million per year for 2009-2011.  I wish that the Front Office would just let him play 150 games and see what he could do...

by jimmuscomp on Dec 20, 2007 4:30 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

At this point
there is no way that Rivera is worth $5-$7 million a year.  Coming off the broken leg, he has a lot to prove.

by gohalos on Dec 20, 2007 4:37 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Sure
but if come June he's hitting, say, ~.280 with an .850 OPS in a decent number of PAs, I'd say sign him up.

Are you crazy?
What did Jose Guillen just sign for?

That's right, $12 million a year - and he is a known juicer - and he is a clubhouse cancer - as many here point out.

Juan Rivera put up a BETTER season in 2006 than Jose Guillen put up in 2005 with the Halos - considered a great season for him.

Rivera, 2006 = .362/.525 for an OPS+ of 126

Guillen, 2005 = .352/.497 for an OPS+ of 121

Just for giggles:

Torii Hunter, v. 2007 = .334/.505 for an OPS+ of 122 and Hunter makes $18 million per year.

Juan Rivera has a case for arguing that he is better than both Guillen and Hunter and you think that $5 million is too much?

Juan Rivera has NEVER been a free agent.  If he is healthy in 2008 and gets playing time enough to put up his average numbers he will command $10 million per year.

I say, sign him now to a below-market extension and ensure that we have one outfielder that is above league average in 2009 that isn't named Vlad.

by jimmuscomp on Dec 20, 2007 6:51 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Which says nothing of that fact
that Vlad probably won't even really be an outfield by 2009.

Oh, and Guillen was an Angel in 2004, btw.  Time flies by when you're having fun not suffering with that abortion of a person, eh?

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Dec 20, 2007 7:34 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

He was out a whole year
He SHATTERED his lower leg.  It is by no means automatic that he will come back and produce the way he did before.

by gohalos on Dec 20, 2007 9:55 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Brutal?
Proof of this please?  And if he were 'gone yesterday', it would appear to me we'd lose one of our best offensive players last year.

I can't stand the amount of shit G.A. gets on this site as if he never did anything for anyone on this team.

If it weren't for the money he was being paid (the exact thing I was suggesting they fix by paying the buyout), no one would be saying a thing about it anyway.

I am heading out right now, but
I will talk to GA's crappiness later this evening.

Baffled
How can a guy who had 65 RBIs in the 2nd half be so hated on this site?  If it was Juan, you would be calling for him to be penciled in LF and how in 2008 he'll be a 120 RBI guy, yet GA has done nothing but be a consistent run producer for this club when healthy.  I am just perplexed at the little love he gets for everything he has done for this club.  I don't know if any player has produced more and gotten less respect based on his body language.

by mdangel on Dec 20, 2007 4:59 PM PST   0 recs

It is because GA is a LOT older than Rivera
Juan Rivera is SIX YEARS YOUNGER and ELEVEN MILLION DOLLARS PER SEASON CHEAPER.

What is more likely: G.A. repeating the 2nd half of 2007 in 2009 or repeating the first half of 2007 in 2009?

As great as he may have been historically, G.A.'s recent contributions were a big disappointment up until July 2007 - now add in the fact that he is the oldest Angel save for Darren Oliver.

by Rev Halofan on Dec 20, 2007 5:06 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

not a bean counter
I try not to get caught up in what the dollars are, but if you remove the month of July 2006 from Rivera's stats, what has he really shown that says he is deserving?  I just don't think that he can be that far on the wrong side of 35 and have 65 RBIs in haf a season

by mdangel on Dec 20, 2007 5:48 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

As far as Rivera
Even removing July, even if you do that he still put up 3 months in 2006 with .850, .800, and .880 OPS's, respectfully. All July really did for Juan was make up for a crappy April/May.

RBI are nice, but anyone will tell you they aren't the most reliable stat for predicting the future. Personally, I still hold that GA majorly changed his plate approach for the better last year, but the question is whether that's going to hold up.

He's approaching an age range where players tend to fall off rapidly (see-Steve Finley, circa 2005). With all his injury problems the last 4 years, even if he's healthy and completely productive next year, you question whether bringing him back again is worth it. In some ways it'll depend on what the other outfielders do.

To be fair
It has more to do with the fact that 2004 to mid-2007, dude has been either hurt, or fairly mediocre, and we're paying him $10 million a season. Additionally, GA is now on the wrong side of 35. He is almost certainly going to continue to break down. I've never been one of the "GA is lazy" crowd, but there are some serious issues with continuing to sign him after next season, especially with Hunter and GMJ already on board. It would be nice if we avoided turning into the Giants.

"When Healthy"
The guy isn't healthy, he has a chronic condition that ensures he will spend at least a month on the DL every season.  He has arthritis, which means he is going to age a lot faster than a normal person.

by gohalos on Dec 20, 2007 5:09 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Casual stroll in the park
except that it's a ballpark. That's what bothers people.

He's an enigma, so it's a love/hate deal. If I had to choose, I'd say I love him.

So let's hug it out, GA, you big lazy cruiser you.

I'm with you and GA
I'll be the ridiculous fanatic who says I hope GA plays 5 more years with 160 hits per season to get that magic 3K.

Plus, that one big smile he cracked when he came up with that snow cone sliding catch in '02 made up for all his enigmatic body language throughout his career.

"Erstad says he's got it. Erstad makes the catch!..."

Rivera
Signing him now would be a decent gamble.  If he'd sign a 3 year, 21 million dollar contract, then he might be a great bargains for 2009-2011, but if his leg issues linger then he might just turn out to be an overpaid 5th outfielder.  As I said, it would be a gamble.

If we let Rivera play out his contract and he hits like he did in 2006, then he'll hit free agency and somebody will pay him 50 million over the next 4 years.

GA
plain and simple: defense.

he plays the laziest defense of anyone, he should be DHing but that is vlads spot now.

its just natural that he cant stay healthy enough to produce at a level of what hes getting paid. This should be his last year by all means.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 21, 2007 2:18 PM PST   0 recs

I keep hearing this
And I think it's wrong.

I think that GA plays so well, and positions himself so well, that it looks like he's not hustling, but he's merely playing smart.
