Puzzling

I was just reading an article and there is the mention of how the Angels have jumped into the Johan sweepstakes.

It talks about how the Twins met with the Angels brass this afternoon to discuss a possible deal for Johan Santana. Meanwhile the Halo executives seem to be split on which big-ticket player to pursue via trade - Santana or Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera.

The Twins are believed to be asking for pitcher Jared Weaver and blue-chip prospect Brandon Wood, for starters, in any package for Santana.

Why couldn't the Angels shock the world and get BOTH? Trade Santana [Ervin], Kendrick and Mathis for Cabrera (if the Marlins would ever accept), and then package Adenhart/Weaver/Wood for Santana.

After all you still have Figgins Isturiz and Aybar left for the middle INF spots. I know it's highly unlikely (especially when considering how reluctant the Angels have been in years past to trade away prospects, granted under Bill Stoneman), but it's fun to think about!

This would make the Angels the evil empire of the West wouldn't it?

$160 million
that would be our payroll. unless you wanna pay $50 for nosebleeds, not happening.

santanas a bad idea. guy will be almost 40 and making $20+ million a year.

then theres lackey, vlad, frankie extensions. wed have a payroll that looks more like the yankees. arte would be losing so much money its not even worth thinking about.

Player salaries do not drive ticket prices
It's the other way around.

Demand drives ticket prices.  If Arte's charging $50 for nosebleeds, it's because people will pay $50 for nosebleeds because they think they're worth the price.  If the payroll goes through the roof, and he's "forced" to raise prices to cover payroll, and nobody buys the tickets because they're too expensive, he's a pretty crappy businessman.

I don't think he's a crappy businessman.

that's stupid.
first off, after trading for both, we don't have the money necessary to extend both. so assuming we keep m-cab over santana, you basically gave away adenhart, weaver, and wood for a year of santana. that's not worth it.

or if you wanna assume we keep santana, we traded kendrick, mathis, and santana (the fish would never accept this, you have to throw in willits or something) for two years of m-cab. i was busy laughing at atlanta for what they did for texiera, i don't want the angels to be the ones laughed at this winter.

what you're proposing is extreme "win now" with a two year window, at most. maybe if we didn't sign hunter we could barely squeak by to sign both but not now. and i certainly wouldn't trade kendrick, mathis, santana, weaver, adenhart, or wood for temporary players.

we're either going after one or the other and, in my opinion, this santana shit is just posturing kind of to offset the tigers/marlins shit.

payroll...
... would be ridiculous in a few years if we traded for both these guys.

by rpmbot5000 on Dec 4, 2007 2:21 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

NY or the Sawx...
...may get a couple really solid years out of Santana. Hell, it may even be the difference in getting another ring. However, that contract is going to look really bad towards the latter years.

Kind of reminds me of the contract that Kevin Brown signed with the Dodgers (remember the private jet clause?). They still haven't fully recovered from that one.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 4:28pm:
Per Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus: Santana to Boston is "all but done" with Lester, Masterson, and Kalish in the package.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by acuda27 on Dec 4, 2007 2:33 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

That's the worst deal ever...
Oh well, let Boston become a pile of shit 3 years from now when their entire payroll is tied up.

It's starting to look like the Rod Sux are about to buy high. It might sting us a little, but I say let 'em.

White Sox closing in on Cabrera

tick, tick
Still waiting for Dierkes to run this, or maybe the Palm Beach Post isn't a credible rag?

The Chicago White Sox are making a strong push to acquire Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera, industry sources said late this afternoon.

The hallways at the winter meetings were buzzing that the White Sox are close to making "a major announcement," and team sources confirmed it has to do with Cabrera.

by Bilko 420 on Dec 4, 2007 2:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Then again
it could always be a "major announcement" about Orlando Cabrera, I guess.

Stupid
If the Marlins take what the Whitesox are offereing their stupid. They have no legitimate major league ready prospects. This stuff doesn't make any sense. One minute it was Detroit, next minute it is the Angels and now it is the Whitesoxs. Josh fields--what a joke. I can't believe that the Marlins are even talking to them.

just let it play out.
the deal that gets down will most likely be the one none of us ever heard. these people work in secret, they're like the keebler elves.

It's looking like it's the Both Sox...
The blogosphere and the media outlets are suggesting that both deals are nearing a completion.

Santana to the Red Sox for a whole bunch of flotsam and jetsam, and Cabrera to the White Sox for the same.

Apparently there will be two press conferences by the end of the night tonight...

What does everybody think about all this?

by goodvibe61 on Dec 4, 2007 2:52 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Not Stupid. Great Idea!
Who cares if we empty out AAA and AA for that matter.  Most of those guys have been lingering for a while anyways.  Most of our good prospects are in A or below right now and there is such a log jam of guys in the bigs there's nowhere for them to go.  Get Cabrera and Santana, and we win now.  And even if it sucks in a couple years, who cares.  We can start worrying about draft picks and prospects then.  But we'll have another ring!  I say win now. Do it!

by Monkeyspanked on Dec 4, 2007 2:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

you ignore the payroll
the team doesnt make enough money to support that kind of payroll.

why do people not get this? arte would be dipping into his own funds, as opposed to reinvested what the team makes.

i dont think arte feels like coughing up 40-50 million dollars A YEAR just to be competitive and "go get it!"

as for the white sox, if they get him, that would be hillarious. trade their pitching prospects and continue to get annhilated by their division for years to come. whos going to be in their rotation?

by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 4, 2007 3:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But......
I'm not necessarily saying to worry about future contracts either.  Keep one later and let the other go.  but this year would be awesome.  Awesome on a level never seen in Angels baseball.

What I don't get is..
why would we be in on Santana in the first place? We've got more starting pitching than anyone else. It just doesn't make a lick of sense.

If we're going after anybody it's gotta be MigCab. He fills the need, and at the right position to boot.

I wanted to ask if everyone thinks that if we do get Cabrera and Kendrick has to go as part of the deal, doesn't that mean that the 3 year search for a permanent spot in the everyday lineup for Chone Figgins is finally over, and he becomes the everyday second baseman? Isn't that how it would work out?

Not that it's happening, as it's sounding like the White Sox as the day progresses..

ROFL
We're going to miss out on Cabrera because we refused to part with Ervin Santana instead of Willits.

Just unbelievable.

This thread
just completely fucking melted down, didn't it?

The Tigers and Marlins are hammering out the final details on an eight-player trade that would send third baseman Miguel Cabrera and left-handed starter Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a left-hander Andrew Miller, outfielder Cameron Maybin and four other prospects.

Looking like both deals are very, very close now
It's like a big ole damb that's finally gonna break...

What I don't understand is that it seems like the Tigers are getting TWO players with an offer not much bigger than ours for ONE player. It always seems like our youngsters are more highly coveted than anyone elses, and I'm sick of it.

by goodvibe61 on Dec 4, 2007 3:15 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

the problem is that we're overvaluing them,
and we can't sell'em at the prices we want.

by shiftyeyedgoat on Dec 4, 2007 3:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Eight players!
Once again, who do the Tigers have. Maybin and Miller are good but not proven. Who are the other six prospects. This is crazy. The Angels should have offered up both Santana and Adenhart. Don't we have enough players to do that trade. I just don't get it. I guess with the World Series will go through Detroit next year.

What a nightmare. Ervin Santana stood in the way.

by Angels on Dec 4, 2007 3:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The Tigers are going to mash like crazy.
Maglio, Cabrera, Sheffield, Carlos Guillen, I think even Curtis Granderson hit more HR's last season than anyone on the Angels except Vlad.

Just a fantastic lineup.

by goodvibe61 on Dec 4, 2007 3:19 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well,
What is the next move, we still need a 3rd Basemen and we still have a wealth of prospects.

Saunders, Willits, Mathis, and Aybar should all be trade bait.  And if we dig into the shed we've still got a Wood, Adenhart or Kendrix for the right player.

by Jay Cal on Dec 4, 2007 3:22 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

The difference maker is gone though.
Yeah, I suppose we could go looking for another third baseman. Who would have anything close to the impact that Cabrera would've had?

Nobody.

by goodvibe61 on Dec 4, 2007 3:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Granderson and Polanco will set their table
Detroit is gonna score runs in bunches. They're probably working on an Inge deal right now to move him.

Wow.

Detroit's offer is better
The Angels could have agreed to give up Santana and the Tigers still would have won this.  We got outbid -- even if we met Florida's demand, they still would have shopped the offer.

by ghostofwallyjoyner on Dec 4, 2007 3:36 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

What the F are you rambling about?
What if the Angels decided to give Santana up earlier, when they asked? THEN THEY WOULDN'T HAVE THE CHANCE TO OFFER THIS.

Face it, Santana stood in the way.

I hope the Angels are happy.

by Angels on Dec 4, 2007 3:45 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Talk about naive
Go on believing this, if it makes you feel better.

Reality: The Marlins were not going to trade Cabrera last week even if we offered all four players.  They always intended to shop him at the winter meetings for the best deal.

Absolutely disgusting
If true.

Let's stick to declining roiders, but not one of the best (if not the best) pitcher in Baseball?

Man, what the F is this organization coming to.

If Tejada was a true difference maker, like Cabrera, then fine, but Santana is a difference maker and he would make our pitching absolutely devastating.
