Tigers set to acquire Cabrera, Willis from Tigers
The Tigers and Marlins are hammering out the final details on an eight-player trade that would send third baseman Miguel Cabrera and left-handed starter Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for a left-hander Andrew Miller, outfielder Cameron Maybin and four other prospects.

Star-divide

This chaps me.  The reason we don't get him is that Santana and Adenhart can't both be shipped with Mathis and Howie?  Really?

"Tigers set to acquire Cabrera, Willis from Tigers"

Are the Tigers playing "trade within the organization?"

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I copied and pasted
MLB had the wrong team.  I did not catch it though.  Good catch.

Seriously...
I am f*cking pissed that Ervin Santana stood in the way of acquiring this guy. The Tigers used this as an opportunity to snatch this superstar and now we're stuck with nothing, besides Hunter and a logjam of outfielders.

God damn all this anticipation for nothing, and all because we wouldn't part with Santana.

by Angels on Dec 4, 2007 3:22 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hahaha
I love that you can make this statement as fact.

Unless your Reagins and took time to post on this site today, its hilarious that anyone thinks they know what is taking place.

by Wytelitning on Dec 4, 2007 3:26 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I love it too
Because we didn't give away the farm and our future all-star batting champion caliber 2nd basemen.
Do not trade Howie!!!

by anaheimisnotla on Dec 4, 2007 3:33 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

weak
I could understand if the sticking point was Kendrick, but Ervin Santana?  If that's the case, it's a total joke that we didn't push through the original Kendrick/Mathis/Adenhart/Santana offer.

Reagins and Moreno blew it
Look forward to another season where we have hitters that can't hit the ball out of the infield
Get rid of Quinlan

by edhoo on Dec 4, 2007 3:24 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Must be a huge infield
Considering they finished fourth in the AL in runs, and project to be better in about four lineup spots next year as is.

by LA Seitz on Dec 4, 2007 3:35 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Even with Cabrera
I don't think they would have scored the 10 runs per game that they would have needed.

But by all mean, let a three game sample tell you all you need to know while ignoring the 162 game sample that preceded it.

by LA Seitz on Dec 4, 2007 4:31 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jesus fuck
do something, and do it now, Reagins.  If the Tigers get M-Cab, and the Red Sox get Santana, suddenly we're not even just second to the Sox.  We have the Tigers AND Sox in front of us.  We're getting owned right now, and that outfield logjam will look twice as ugly.  Hopes smashed again.

DEAL SANTANA DEAL ADENHART DEAL KENDRICK AND DEAL MATHIS.  GET THIS SHIT DONE.

Doesn't mean there isn't still trades to be made.

I have faith in Reagins
I think we'll just acquire someone else now.  Maybe go back to Justin Morneau?

by NPCody on Dec 4, 2007 3:28 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Actually
I take that back.  My prediction is Reagins trades for a slugger that hasn't even been mentioned in trade talks once.

Lets not panic
Its okay... Yes I would have made the deal but, we are okay. There is other chances out there to improve.
We keep Kendirck at second his power and production improve, Figgy at third will be more than servicable  and Aybar and Itzturis and maybe Wood battle it out for SS. Meanwhile we have a lot of time to get rid of the log jam in the outfield.
Who knows maybe we are working on a trade for Khalil Green as previously stated

by Sinatrasratpack on Dec 4, 2007 3:30 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just can't believe....
These idiots didn't realize that Cabrera won't just be waiting for them if they decide to wait it out hoping the Marlins take less. Other teams aren't just going to pass up on this opportunity to acquire this rare talent.

I really hope the Angels are happy with Ervin Santana, knowing that he was the reason this didn't get done.

so crazy
i wanted miggy really badly but im surprisingly not angry about this. maybe its because i dont mind detroit?

well, a lot of people here got what they wanted.

howie kendrick, ervin santana and nick adenhart officially become the most scrutinized players on our roster for the next 5 years.

heres to hoping they are what theyre supposed to be.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Dec 4, 2007 3:32 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It is funny
that with a fan base so divided over giving up Kendrick, so many people are angry about this.  Shouldn't all the pro Howie guys be celebrating?

I'm happy
While I like HK47 and believe he has a huge upside, that's not the only reason I'm happy.

I looked at this as return to the Bavasi style of "sell everything to win this year".  I'm glad it didn't go through.

MLB TRADE RUMORS
Tigers Acquire Cabrera, Willis For Six Players
ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that the Tigers have acquired Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis for Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Mike Rabelo, and three minor leaguers.

This is what the hot stove league is all about, unexpected massive eight-player blockbusters.  All the talk was that the Tigers would have a quiet Winter Meetings.  Instead they traded for one of the best hitters in the game, adding an immediate 5-7 wins in the process.  Swapping out Willis for Miller will probably be a push in 2008 before things swing toward the Fish.

Maybin and Miller are both elite prospects; it seems packaging Cabrera with Willis was the only way they could get both.  Interestingly, it seems like Sports Review Magazine may have scooped this trade way back at 9:52am CST.  I am surprised this link didn't get in my hands until now.

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by retrohalo on Dec 4, 2007 3:37 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Tigers made a better offer
Bottom line, for all those who say we lost Cabrera because we didn't surrender Santana, stop kidding yourselves.  The Tigers presented the best package; those are elite prospects.

it was adenhart.
"it's mind-bottling."

by retrohalo on Dec 4, 2007 3:40 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Are you serious?
Maybin and Miller havn't proven anything. They certainly have upside but I wouldn't call them elite prospects. Maybin batted a buck forty three in limited action and Millers era was 5.76 in limited action. This doesn't show me anything Kendrick was the only sure thing that was offered to the Marlins. We should have given up Santana. What is it with this gu? It's like he has nine lives. He better pitch well next year.

by AMB07 on Dec 4, 2007 3:47 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am surprised
I really thought we were getting him after the Napoli story broke about them working out together.  Sounds like Detroit's GM should be the Ninja...not Reagins.  He came out of no where to grab MCab and Willis.

Well...looks like it will be 07 all over again.  Win the West and hope we get hot in the playoffs.

I hope we aren't turning into the 90's Braves.

by lewkay on Dec 4, 2007 3:39 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Looks like it's a done deal...
F Reagins.

He signed Hunter, who isn't all that good to begin with, created a logjam of outfielders, and now we're probably going to move Rivera for GMJ.

HOW does that make our offense better?!?! Losing Rivera and adding Hunter, while keeping GMJ doesn't make us better!! It just gives us an additional $90 million on the payroll, while Rivera could probably duplicate or put up better numbers than Hunter.

This is a disaster and I am not looking forward to next season.

by Angels on Dec 4, 2007 3:39 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All I can say is...
Agggghhhh.  They let this deal get held up over a guy who A) was demoted last year and B) can't win on the gd@mn road to save his life.

Maybe the rumors of them going after Santana have some truth to them?  That's the only reason I can see why they didn't pull the trigger on this deal. (&#Q$%&!!!

by onthevirg on Dec 4, 2007 3:39 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just stop it
The Tigers made a better offer, even if Santana was included.

by ghostofwallyjoyner on Dec 4, 2007 3:41 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes they did...
But only because the Angels gave them the opportunity to do so.  It's established history that the Marlins target what they want in return and stick to it until they get it.  I admire Reagins for not sitting on his hands, but he got outplayed on this one.

by onthevirg on Dec 4, 2007 3:48 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Marlins would still have waited
to see if the offer was topped, which it was.

by ghostofwallyjoyner on Dec 4, 2007 3:50 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe
But maybe not...from the all accounts the deal was practically done twice.  We'll probably never know the full details of what broke it down those two times, but if it was because of somebody they were down on already, it makes no sense.

Dombrowski obviously knew what kind of player he was going to be getting and went for it.  Oh well.  You never know what might be next or how it's going to play out.

by onthevirg on Dec 4, 2007 3:55 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They were probably using us
as leverage against the Tigers.  Sucks for them in a few years.

The deal was done twice and both times the Marlins backed out and asked for more.  How do you do business with that?  Arte said that is what happened and no one challenged his account so it's probably safe to assume this is fairly accurate.  Where would they have stopped? Weaver?  Vlad?  They obviously weren't interested in 'fair' and were also in a strong position given that they didn't HAVE to trade Cabrera.

Write them off as D-bags and move on.

Captain, there are doubt's...

by Match Day 5 on Dec 4, 2007 5:57 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What a haul for them
I would look into some possible collusion with Leyland and the Marlins front office cuz this is almost at ridiculaous status.

by Wytelitning on Dec 4, 2007 3:40 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just upsetting
The Angels brass really blew this one. All they had to do was give up Santana who gave us nothing but headaches last year. Eventually this became a clash of egos after Artes comments last week. Seriously, this a complete bummer. We are better then last year but not better then Red Sox and Tigers. If we don't get Tejada we have no shot of improving our offense.

Detroit got two players for nothing. Unbelievable.

by AMB07 on Dec 4, 2007 3:41 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is getting to be nonsensical
You have no idea what you are talking about.  The prospects surrendered by Detroit are exceptional, BETTER than what we had to give.  Just accept it.

by ghostofwallyjoyner on Dec 4, 2007 3:43 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't agree
None of these players are either a future batting champion or a Cy Young winner.

by AMB07 on Dec 4, 2007 3:59 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lets not forget....
What a pitcher's park Comerica is.  They had to move the fences in at taht place.  Also, the D-Train was not that great of a pitcher last year.  While the park will help him, the steady diet of better hitters in the AL will not.
It is way overdue Arte. #5 needs to be retired by the Angels.

by BrianDowningFan on Dec 4, 2007 3:42 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

TO EVERYBODY FREAKING OUT
Wow, calm down.  What reason do we have to believe that the Angels are just going to give up now?  There are plenty of teams out there who would LOVE to get Howie Kendrick, Brandon Wood, Aybar, Saunders, whoever.  We have the pieces - something will get done.

by NPCody on Dec 4, 2007 3:42 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

YEAH
but nothing that will net us a player of Cabrera's calibre, or a 24-year-old superstar.

by Angels on Dec 4, 2007 3:44 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Let down
It was understandable to get pumped off of a Vlad/Cabrera combo, but that fell through.  Everything Reagins has done this off season has been under the radar, and, maybe something else is in the works, who knows.

by autrys cowboys on Dec 4, 2007 3:48 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good God
We paid Hunter $90 million, will probably lose Rivera because of GMJ, so we essentially subtracted Rivera's production for Hunter's, while adding $90 million. How the F*CK does that make us better? How does adding $90 million justify losing Rivera's production for Hunter's?

Man, this is a disaster!

by Angels on Dec 4, 2007 3:49 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well
it will be interesting to see what we do from here.

we still have too many outfielders and too many pitchers.

in my opinion, we're going to be heavily involved in either a Tejada/Bedard package or go really aggressively at the Twins.

you cant justify the orlando cabrera deal without a partner deal involving extra pitching.

something has to happen.

right?

by retrohalo on Dec 4, 2007 3:51 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agree
Without getting Cabrerra or Tejada the trading of Orlando doesn't make as much sense. We essentially swaped Hunter for Orlando and defensively we are little weaker. Great work.

Wait Wait Wait
Where does it say that the Angels' refusal to give up Santana precluded a deal?  Where?  Is this just something people here are making up in order to get themselves all riled up?

Depending on who the four minor leaguers are, Detroit's offer probably trumped anything the Angels could have offered.  At this point, Andrew Miller is a better prospect than Ervin, Saunders or Adenhart.  Maybin is a better prospect than Wood at this point, and fills a need.

That's just life.  It happens.

by jjackflash on Dec 4, 2007 3:54 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

nah, dude.
kendrick is better than maybin at this point, santana and adenhart would've trumped miller, and mathis would've been the fish's icing.

not sure how much i would've liked it if that trade went down but now we'll never know.

"it's mind-bottling."

by retrohalo on Dec 4, 2007 3:56 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Needs
Florida needs an outfielder like Maybin more than it needs a 2B.

The lustre is off Ervin, and Adenhart hasn't pitched above AA.  Miller's a better prospect than either.  And like I said, let's see who the other minor leaguers are.  Supposedly, one of them is a catcher, and there are legitimate concerns about whether Mathis will ever hit enough to play every day.

by jjackflash on Dec 4, 2007 3:59 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I saw Miller pitch
and I wasn't that impressed. Once again everyone falls in love with someones potential verses results. Kendrick was the only proven commodity in this deal.

Here
Here's the full trade according to the Free Press.

Tigers get Dontrelle Willis & Miguel Cabrera.

Marlins get Maybin, Miller, Rabelo, RHP Burke Badenhop, Eulogio De La Cruz, & Trahern

It says numerous places on this website and other places on the net that HK, Mathis, Adenhart were agreed up and the sticking point was Santana.  They wanted him and we wanted to trade a prospect.
