Is Detroit really going to be that good now?
I am really disappointed that we could not get M-cab. Ever since hearing that he was doing a strong workout regiment with Naps I was really excited that we were going to get him. But now he has been traded to Detroit and at first glance I was really worried about how strong they could be. However after looking at their situation more closely they will definitely be a strong team but not an elite team.
Their pitching situation is really BAD.
Zumaya, a really strong up and coming reliever, is already going to miss most of next season and had to have major shoulder surgery. Their bullpen was bad to enough last year, but now their bullpen is even weaker.
Todd Jones, their closer (39 years old, going to be 40 in April) was mediocre last year with:
an ERA of 4.28 (2.81 for Krod), a whip of 1.418 (1.248 for Krod), an ERA+ 107 (162 for Krod), a K/BB of 1.44 (2.65 for Krod), and a BAA of .267 (.204 for Krod).
These are clearly very mediocre numbers for a closer and if anything they will be worse next year as he turns 40. The Tigers have 2 avg relief pitchers (ERA between 4 and 5) in Fernando Rodney (30) and Jason Grilli (31), 1 good reliever (ERA between 2-3) in Bobby Seay (29), and 1 horrible relief pitcher (ERA > 7) in Francisco Cruceta (28).
Their starting pitching is better, but not much better. They have one of the leagues best young pitchers in Jason Verlander (not enough good things could be said about him) but after that their pitching is avg at best. They have Jeremy Bonderman who had a horrible second half with a 2007 ERA of over 5, whip of 1.38, and a BAA of .279. He is only 25 but in 5 full seasons in the majors he has had a low era of 4.08. After that they have:
Dontrelle Willis (ERA over 5),
Nate Robertson (ERA 4.76 WHIP 1.47 BAA .283)
and Kenny Rodgers (43 years old, K/BB 1.44, 2007 ERA 4.43).
Their pitching is weak to begin with and they just traded away some of their best pitching prospects with their MLB-ready, potential star pitcher Andrew Miller (22 years old)
Now their offense is very good but several players (Magglio Ordonez, Placido Polanco) are coming off career years and at their age (32,33) you would have to expect their numbers to decline.
If you you look head to head at their positional players with the angels positional players the angels should be better next year at first base (if Kotchman can stay healthy), Second Base (Kendrick should have a better year and Polanco is not going to those numbers again), Left Field (GA/Rivera/GMJ are all better than Marcus Thames and his .242 BA with 54 RBI and 18 HR), and Right Field (Vlad is better than Magglio).
They have a better center fielder, shortstop, third baseman, DH, and catcher (although I think naps can be better than 36 year old Rodriguez). However the problem is that their center fielder, shortstop, and DH are much better than our players at those positions and thats why their offense is 1 through 9 much better than ours.
Considering how bad their pitching is and how good our pitching is I don't see why we couldn't beat them in a post season series, especially since we should have a better record and thus home field advantage (because we play in a much weaker division).
I'm still upset about M-cab but they just threw away their future (all their offensive players are in their 30s except M-cab and Granderson) and our team is very young and should continue to be great for a long time

Original Post
For starters they Tigers will have Carlos Guillen playing first. Turns that thing around about the Angels being much better at 1B. Nothing against Kotchman, but Guillen's numbers show up more then Kotchmans. Admittedly you need Kotchman to stay healthy in order to be better the Carlos Guillen. As for 2nd base Polanco is a proven big league hitter with a lifetime .305 AVG that managed to stay healthy all year (if only Howie could do the same). So not so sure why you're quick to count Polanco out. Even if he puts up his career numbers over the last 10 years he is giving you above average production at 2nd base. By the way older does not always mean a decline, but it should always mean knowledge, and entering next season at 32 in today's standards does not make one old. Just ask players like C. Jones, or J. Posada., or all the others that played this year at age 31 or older. Polanco played at age 31 in 2007.
As for the LF thing Thames is no longer the guy there. Tigers acquired J. Jones lifetime .280/.329/.455 not saying he is the great answer but GMJ lifetime .261/.334/.419 and his 162 gm career # are much lower then J. Jones. GA's numbers and Jones are more comparable .297/.327/.471. Of course you have Rivera and his # .291/.340/.473. So LF isn't such a done deal as you put it. Of course Vlad takes it down in RF but not like the Tigers have a stiff playing there either.
As for the 3rd base and SS situation they have 2 former WS winners playing those positions. Not to mention one of the elite hitters avg/power in the game. The SS isn't all that bad either. Sure he has shown to be a better hitter in the NL but he has skills. As you said they get it done at CF, 3B, SS, Then there is Sheffield who flat out rakes at DH, and Pudge still can catch and throw while adding to the offense.
As for the pitching they have gotten better with Willis added to the rotation. Bonderman pitched with arm problems and was finally shut down. As for the bullpen they have a few issues with J. Zumaya injured, and T. Jones isn't the greatest but he did save 38 out of 44. F. Rod 40 out of 46. Not sure who was included in the trade but the Tigers had 4 pitchers win in double digits in AAA and 2 big winners this past year in AA one going 12-6 and the other 14-5. So they might have a few arms left. Bottom line is the tigers could score a 1000 runs on the season and pitching will be enough to win with what they have, and have them as a huge favorite to win the WS.

dude, please stop
and the tiger's rotation is not as good as you make it sound like. they have one good pitcher in verlander, and then the rest are average or below average. i'm in the camp that says willis is declining and he'll got lit up like an electric chair in the al.
the tigers depleted their farm. almost all of it's gone. they have barely anything left in it now and very little pitching. they either win now or flail around in mediocrity for the next five to ten years.
despite what you say, their pitching will always let other teams get back in it.

Fact
What do you know about the Tigers farm system? Seen them? Seen anyone play? When was the last time you saw Toledo play or Erie? When was the last time you have been to that pit of a place Lakeland? Why would they flail around for the next 5-10 yrs? They can't go out and sign anyone for the next 10 years? They get no draft picks during that time? Dombrowski doesn't understand the game and the art of building a team or an organization? Tony the football player Reagins knows better? Before Dombrowski got to Detroit they had been awful! 4 years later he has them playing in a WS.

okay.
the tigers depleted their system. it's common knowledge. they shipped out to get shef and now to get m-cab and willis. that doesn't come cheap.
you wanna know what happened during those "awful 4 years"? they got high draft picks which means they got more talent. that's what happens when you suck. that's what they used to be better: trading those guys, a few good signings here and there, bringing some of those guys up.
i don't like reagins. when did i say dombrowski was stupid? i said they're in a win now mode with a limited window and that they have awful pitching with little to no prospects left in their farm.

Detroit will be very good nex year.
The Tigers are in a win-now mode. If you look at their lineup none of those players are that young at all (besides Curtis Granderson).

yeah
didnt they trade 3 pitchers for sheffield?
and just gave up 4 in this trade?
they might be deep, but no team is THAT deep.
id be shocked if they dont win a series in the next 2 years. unrivaled lineup in terms of depth and balance.
we're screwed.

Well there you go.
That Detroit lineup is looking pretty deadly though. Health permitting, as you noted.
