Thoughts on 6:05 pm start for Saturday games?

Hey,
I'm sure this issue has already been discussed ad nauseam, but what are everybody's thoughts on Saturday night home games starting at 6:05pm instead of 7:05pm?

Star-divide

Can somebody please tell me why the Angels decided to make this move? I wasn't that happy with the 12:35pm games on Sunday, but this move on Saturday night sucks even more. Thoughts?

Saturday Traffic
is less consequential on the local freeways at that time (they could NEVER move a weekday game to 6 pm) and it minimizes the LOCAL traffic around 7 pm Arrowhead Pond events and the early exit time helps getting out instead of being gridlocked with Pond concert and hockey crowds splitting.

I actually like it
Creates an Ernie Banks opportunity.  Now, you can have your Halos and a Saturday night out.

Go Back to 7:05 p.m.
When the game is over I am going back home.  An early start is not going to change the temperature of the beer in my fridge one iota.  The fewer game starting times I have to remember the better.  The good news is I only live 20 minutes from the Big A.  If it is 5:30 p.m. and it dawns on me "oh yeah, Saturday games start an hour earlier than other nights" I probably will only miss seeing the first batter.

I hope...
that fans will start showing up on time for the Saturday games.  Sunday day games people seemed to come late as well.  This sucks for sales.

In other news, I heard we're starting to sell California Pizza Kitchen personal pan pizzas for $8.25.  No more two slices of dominoes.  I heard we'll be carrying three kinds: Pepperoni, cheese, and chicken.  Not too sure about the chicken selling well.  We'll see

The price sucks
but I love chicken pizza.  Just as long as it doesn't have the onion shit on it tha comes with the BBQ chicken pizza.

Please!!! What ever happened to a soda and a hot dog as the staple of American baseball???

as a parental unit
it might be worth a try with the kiddies. They won't be so close to bed time thus less cranky and I might be able to stay for the whole game (now that's a novel idea)

It is to avoid the "9:30 rule..."
Hell, when I last had season seats in 1995, we had 7:35PM starts...if everyone left at 9:30 like they usually did, the masses would only catch about 1.5 hours of game (since they arrived well after 8PM).  Less window of time for people to hit Arte's money-making shops and concession stands.

It is another marketing ploy as 6PM is closer to dinner time, so why not encourage people to catch dinner at the park and spend nearly $100 on a meal, drinks and snacks for 4 people?  That's the Angels' ownership's thinking, I will guarantee you.  And it is brilliant.

As for the little ones' bed time, ladybug, that is why I bring the dual stroller and let them fall asleep during the game and wheel them out to the car unconscious after the 27th out has been recorded.

by Downing Rules on Apr 2, 2007 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

unfortunately, the stroller is not an option
it's not concern for bedtime, it's the attention span. I want to watch the game in peace, not fighting a 5 yr old because he wants something from every vendor that wanders by.
I meant that if the game ends at 9pm rather than 10 pm, the moods are a little more tolerable.

I wasn't there on Saturday...
I was in Mammoth, taking advantage of my last few days of spring break.  I'll be there tonight, and I think I'll be on field level first base side/right field pavillion.  I won't know for sure until I get there though.

How to we distinguish Angel Hawker from all of the other vendors?  If you are selling those ice cream cookies I will buy one for my son!

I forecast the odds for the Angels winning tonight to be better than 2-to-1.  In 49 previous Texas @ LA Angels battles the Halos sport a 33-16 edge.  Here our the Angel won-loss records in all games I have seen them play from 1962 to 2006:

Standings 1962-2007
While I am at it I may as well post the all-time standings of games I have been to.  A Penny for your thoughts?  Saddled with Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Angels, Brad Penny is 0-6 in games I have seen him pitch.  That is the worst record I have seen any pitcher have.  Jerry Koosman and Al Fitzmorris both finished at 0-5.  It says here that Brad Penny is the captain of Grady Little's Dodger dog house!

I seriously wanna know
how you managed to see more Derek Jeter homers than J.T. Snow homers.  both have roughly the same number of career 4-baggers, but one played for your home team for 3 years, and the other is an out of town, out of division yankee bum.

1962-2007 (April 3rd) West Division W-L Records
This isn't dice baseball!  I am reporting what I actually saw happen.  Note that there are eleven seasons (82, 83, 86, 87, 90, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, and 00) that I was shutout and did not see a single baseball game.  I was in Hawaii that first year and in Asia (mostly Nepal and India) for the others.

I did see J.T. Snow hit 3 home runs.  Yes, I have seen Derek Jeter hit 6 home runs.  However, I only saw Don Mattingly hit 1 home run.  I saw J.T.'s father, Jack Snow, score more touchdowns for the L.A. Rams than I saw J.T. hit for the San Francisco Giants.  I never saw J.T. Snow hit a home run for the Angels.  I saw Jack Snow catch 3 td passes from Roman Gabriel in a 36-17 Rams win over New Orleans in 1969.

Please note that the years (2002 and 2005) I saw the Angels go 6-0 against the Texas Rangers were vintage years for the Halos.  Those are the only seasons the Angels won a post season series.  The Angels are off to a promising start against the Rangers in 2007.  I doubt I will go to six Ranger-Angel games in 2007.  I will probably max out at five.  It will be a good omen if the Angels go 5-0 in those games.  Yes, I will be at this afternoon's Ranger-Angel game.  Let's sweep the Texas Toxoids!

Home Run Stats
Here is a list of all players that I have seen hit 2 or more career home runs that were active in 1997 or later.  You will find J.T. Snow with 3 home runs.  Casey Kotchman and Ian Kinsler are new entries in the K listings with 2 long gones each.  Adam Kennedy is king of the home run hitting K's with 16.  Enjoy!

RIP Repulski (1928-1993)
I never saw Rip play.  His last season was 1961 and the first major league game I went to was in 1962.  John Samo.  Wasn't he the Oakland fan banished to Alcatraz?

he's loud!
You'll know him because he's louder than any of the other vendors.  ;)  We can pick him out from a few sections away.
With win-win-win, we all win!
