The Crown Jewel or a Cubic Zirconia?

Granted it's very early in the season, but Brandon Wood is having a terrible start to his first season in Triple A. Here's a link to his stats at Salt Lake City.

Note the dismal K/BB ratio, the very thing he needs to work on the most. I love Wood's potential, but the bottom line is this guy is going to go down as one of the bigger busts in Halo history if he doesn't cut down on his K's and learn to work a walk.

He started 0-8

so he's now 4 for his last 15 (.267). Not as bad as it all looks. Also, his walk totals have increased every year thus far. In '05, he walked 48 times with 536ABs. In '06, that was 54 walks with only 453ABs. One way to measure this stuff is the differential between BA and OBP. Wood's was .079 last year, and .062 in '05, and .061 in '04. At this point, his .079 is actually pretty good by most professional standards. He's also, need I remind you, 22 years old.

About the only useful thing to look at over a few at bats is when he does hit the ball, does it jump?

P.S. I got that minor league internet TV thing and was hoping to see some Salt Lake games, but now I find out they only have about 7 triple-A games each night. Hopefully soon I can start seeing Brandon for myself.

Don't step in it

Of course it's a small sample size - I pointed that out. However, it does suggest a continued pattern of poor plate discipline and far too many strikeouts. I'll defer to Casey's statistical acumen for further discussion.
