A's Name change

Has anyone here read this article on the A's official site? link: http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061109&content_id=1738100&vkey=news_ oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak

Best quote:
"But the Mercury News reported that Wolff went so far as to propose "Fremont A's" and "Silicon Valley A's" to the council as names for the relocated club."

The Silicon Valley A's? Jesus Cristo, that is the lamest name for a baseball team I have ever heard of.  There are many other articles on the new stadium.  In all fairness, after looking at the different picture galleries of the artist renderings it looks like it is going to be a damn nice park, maybe even rivaling the Yankee's new park.  I have to say the large grass area behind the stadium with the Jumbo Screen is a good idea.

I understand the pet peeve
but calling them the Metalloids of Fremont just does not have the same zing as calling them a bunch of boobs

I probably should tell you I'm an A's fan.
Here's the thing - to me, silicon is very NorCal (intellectual, important to the world) and silicone is very SoCal (big superficial boobs).  Of course the generalization isn't fair, but I'm sticking to it.

Well HA HA HA sal
get used to a bunch of people making fun of your team's name - it is called the sodomy of karma and the Oaky Choaky shit-talkers have a plate of humble pie being served up at the Dine-On-Crow deli.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving big-market club that chintzes out its patrons into believeing they are small market tarp-heads. Enjoy it, it is only getting started... you will be real sick of it in the third season when sportswriters mention the stupid team name yet agin instead of providing any meaningful analysis...

by Rev Halofan on Apr 24, 2007 12:22 AM PDT up reply actions

That's a good one.
  1. Funny you calling anybody else a shit-talker.
  2. I'm having a perfectly fun conversation with ladybug.  Way to butt in and ruin it.

by salb918 on Apr 24, 2007 7:50 AM PDT up reply actions

unfortunately
that name change is going to put the A's further down a pit; a stadium purported to be difficult to readily access, supposedly "teching" it up beyond belief (sorry, but that just reeks of "come and vandalize me").
The name change? Oakland A's-that has at least some history there. The Fremont A's- it sounds like a minor league or little league name. The A's have finally started to make some money and it's burning a hole in Wolffffff's pocket.

The transportation plan is...
...sketchy, to say the least. I'll reserve judgement until I see what's planned.  I think teching it up sounds really cool actually, but of course has the potential to go from nifty to annoying pretty quickly.

Name change: as I wrote in the THT preseason book:

As for the new stadium, no amount of payroll increase
will be worth the karmic retribution of A's fans having
to deal with the name [geographic location] Athletics
of [different, nearby geographic location] after having
taunted Angels fans for the last few years.

by Downing Rules on Apr 24, 2007 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions

That may be true
that A's fans (and really all of baseball) gave LAAAA a tremendous amount of crap for the name change.   There is a difference, however, if the A's follow suit -- the A's are moving to a new city and need to represent that in their name.  The Angels, well, they were in Anaheim, as they are now, and not in LA.  The name change was a pure market ploy with no basis in geographic location, worthy of everyone's disgust.

by humdinger on Apr 24, 2007 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

and it didn't reach the absurdity
of something like the Los Angeles Angels of Orange County, or the Orange Angels of Los Angeles or the Katella Angels.

We
don't even know what the name is going to be yet.  I'm pretty sure that there has been no formal announcement and everything in this thread is speculation at this point.  I do hope the name doesn't reach the level of absurdity of The Los Atletismos Athletics of Fremont, though.

Dipshit
Nice Comparison.

Let me know when there is a city named Los Athletisimos.

Los Angeles is actually a city you clown.

by hauldog on Apr 24, 2007 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh wait -- my bad.
You're absolutely right. There is no city in the Bay Area named Los Atletismos that has a large fan-base for us to  attempt to sponge off of through shameless name change.  Possibly my point would be easier for you to comprehend if a mascot change were proposed as well.  Maybe "The Los San Franciscos Saint Francises of Fremont" is an analogy more to your liking?  Or maybe you've just missed my point entirely.

by humdinger on Apr 24, 2007 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Um still a dipshit
Your not so clever joke was refering to the fact that Los Angeles translated from Spanish to English is "The Angels."  So the name of the Angels could be The Angels Angels.

Los Athletimos I assume is your attempt to say The Athletics Athletics in Spanish.  I was merely reminding your no talent ass, that Los Angeles is actually a city.

As far as sponging off of a city.  Nice call on picking Fremont.  Of all the places to allign the team with in the Bay Area they pick that shit hole?  Nice work Wolff.

You referencing a large fan base is humorous as well.  The miniscule attendance Fremont takes in is laughable, I think large fan base and A'ss is mutually exclusive.  Maybe you should start tarping your comments so they seem full of thought?

OK
<<Your not so clever joke was refering to the fact that Los Angeles translated from Spanish to English is "The Angels.">>

Well sort of, sport -- I do think that's funny.  Bug's comment was to point out the relative ridiculousness of the Angel's name and the possible A's names.  My point was that there's nothing quite as ridiculous as a team one day deciding to change its name to incorporate that of its cross town/hated rival so it can suck off some of the revenue (especially when the name starts with "The The Angels Angels").
No matter what crazy name Wolff/Fremont decides on, your team will always have that distinction.

<< I was merely reminding your no talent ass that Los Angeles is actually a city.]>

True, but so is San Francisco.

<<As far as sponging off of a city.  Nice call on picking Fremont.>>

No, that's where the team would actually be located physically.  In my hypo, San Francisco would be the city sponged off of -- you see, like LA for the Angels.

<<You referencing a large fan base is humorous as well.  The miniscule attendance Fremont takes in is laughable.>>

Once again, this is referencing the city that the team(s) are not actually located in.  In my hypo, San Francisco would be the city with the large fan-base -- you see, like LA for the Angels.

<<Maybe you should start tarping your comments so they seem full of thought?>>

That was sort of funny, but for some reason, I doubt that this was an original thought.

by humdinger on Apr 24, 2007 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

San Francisco?
WTF does SF have to do with the A's?  Every time I turn the TV on and see SBC it is full of San Franciscans rooting for their team.  They could give a shit about Oakland, and no stadium in Fremont is going to change that.

Have you seen the number of seats they are putting in the stadium?  It is small.  It will be one of the smallest parks in MLB.  If SF were such a big factor in the spendid mew park they are constructing don't you think they would have made it with a larger seating capacity? Or do you think they were scared they would have to bring the tarp with them?

New A's Park
Cisco Field "is going to be the most modern, most advanced technological facility in the country," said Fremont councilman Bob Wieckowski.

Yeah, right.  Currently, one can go to an A's game via mass transportation from as far as Sacramento--over 90 miles and an hour and a half drive--train and BART.  But there is no mass transportation via BART or other rail/bus service to Fremont.  BART doesn't even go that far south.

Maybe a horse and buggy will await funs where BART ends.
