Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Wily Mo Angel?

Came across this tidbit on ESPN.com:
I would have included a link but this is "Insider" $$$ content. Rev, I hope my cutting and pasting falls short of incurring your wrath as this was but 1 section of a page of "Rumors".

Cutting their losses?
May 12 - Don't be surprised if the Red Sox decide to deal Wily Mo Pena. Although Pena has prodigious power, he is becoming a liability in the field.
According to the Providence Journal, one AL official said Pena still has some trade value, though it seems to be decreasing almost daily. But a team probably would take a chance on his potential.
"It's just a matter of how little they would take," the official told the newspaper.
Small-market teams in search of some pop might be tempted since Pena is young (25), relatively affordable ($3M) and under control through next season. Out of the spotlight and given the opportunity to play every day, he could develop.

Since Pena is a butcher in the Outfield, he would have to slot in at DH for the most part. He's definitely intriguing since he has averaged a homer every 17.94 ABs for his career while playing sporadically. This would equate to 30+ dingers over 550 ABs.

His K rate would make Rob Deer raise an eyebrow but we've already got Naps fanning at a similar clip without the production. His career slugging pct. of .479 isn't bad for a young kid without a full time job.

As a fellow Dominican, he'd likely fit in well Vlad's Latin quarter of the clubhouse too. Given the struggles of Pedroia at 2B and Crisp in Center, he might be had straight up for Figgy or a package of Aybar and another prospect.

What do you guys think?

Napoli and Hillenbrand for W-MoP
Mathis lifted up to where he belongs, Francona lets Shea only play against the Blue Jays.

by Rev Halofan on May 14, 2007 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

Hell no
We give nothing we need. And right now, we need Napoli to provide offense from the C position that Mathis can't currently contemplate.

by mattwelch on May 14, 2007 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm
Can you let me know when he starts doing that?

by Obscurity on May 14, 2007 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

thats true
wish i knew where to find statistics on jeff mathis' fielding and throwout % down in salt lake so far.
even though napoli is coming around offensively i still have my doubt

but
i may be getting ahead of myself, napoli calls better games, mathis was a disaster....

Right now, for instance?
  • Napoli currently has an OBP/SLG of .299/.385.
  • Mathis currently has an OBP/SLG of .299/.368.
BUT HERE'S THE BIG DIFFERENCE -- Napoli is playing the major leagues in a pitcher's park, and Mathis is playing in AAA in a hitter's park.

My statement
Didn't reflect an opinion on which catcher in the Angels system is more productive offensively, but it  did come from a condescending tone towards the lack of Mike Napoli's offensive prowess this year (as of this date)

by Obscurity on May 15, 2007 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

amen
let's hope his recent success means he's heating up.  Because he has been terrible!!!

by thewebb on May 15, 2007 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

i'd say...
it's worth a shot.

it would be almost impossible for him to be worse than what we've got at the moment.

he's got some unbelievable pop, and it would be cool to see what he could do given the chance to play regularly.

hillenbrand
Already got his shot with boston, i don't see him going back there, i'd rather give up figgins than aybar personally.

Me too
Aybar has better defense (and its fun to watch) and he can hit better.

Figgins is an alright defender but he lacks the spark on offense that he once had.

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i would rather have pena
as an angel than crede, atkins, or any of the other fuckers people talk about all the time on this site.

Over Atkins?
Are you sure about that?  Willy Mo's power is impressive, but his K/BB rate will be his downfall.  I would consider picking him up on the cheap, but he will be out of the major leagues before he's 30 (he's now 25) if he doesn't learn how to be more selective - and soon.

by Johnny Angel on May 14, 2007 8:39 PM PDT reply actions

Lets go on the Atkins diet
I wouldn't give up much for Wily Mo.  Even if the Angels are willing to bench Anderson and cut Hillenbutt, in a month or two we can have Vlad, Rivera, Matthews, and Willits for the OF/DH spots.

Other OF's who could hit 30 homers and strike out 150+ times are Marcus Thames and Jonny Gomes.  Perhaps they would be cheaper.  Under no circumstance should we trade Napoli.  Dude is starting to hit, finally.  He's at .220 now.  I'd rather take a .220 hitter in the show than a .260 hitter at Salt Lake, which is what Mathis is.  And Mathis does not have Napoli's power or patience.

Still, forget about these low OBP sluggers.  Go for the big guns - Adam Dunn or Troy Glaus.

If I went to war and could only take one weapon, it would be an HK47.

Maybe the Sox could throw in a quality
left-handed relief specialist, like, say ........ JC Romero?

No Mo
The Angels' track record with guys named Mo is rather poor.

Atkins
Last year his home/road splits were great.  He had a .933 OPS on the road.

This year he has been terrible at home and even worse on the road.

Do we really want to take the time let him find his stroke in our lineup?

Why do people think he is even available?

The hole in his swing makes
the sinkhole in Rev's LOSE pic look like your average pothole after a rainy day.

.300 average....Easy??? C'mon man.

.330/.500 maybe but definitely not the average.
