Huston Street

I don't know if anyone has seen this yet but Huston Street has been put on the DL with irritation of the ulnar nerve.  This DL stint could be two to three months based on similar injuries to other pitchers.   As if things couldn't get worse in Choaktown they are now going to have to be without their closer to add to the list of injuries.  The Angels are better equipped to deal with their own injuries but they also need to put the A's away NOW.

The A's
Are leading the AL in starters ERA after losing Zito in the offseason and Harden to injury this season.

This after they traded Mulder and Hudson in one offseason 2 years ago and still contended.

I am done underestimating these bastards.

I don't underestimate them
I tire of the cries though.  Harden and Crosby should never be counted on to contribute and you should probably pencil Boardgame in for only 2/3 of a season.

Paper Mache squad.

Crosby
just isn't that good.  He won the ROY in a down year for rookies and has been injured or ineffective since that magical season that left Gammons and other ESPN analysts touting him as an MVP candidate.

Oakland injury status update
Courtesy of Rotoworld:
  • Huston Street hits the 15-day DL with an irritation in the right (pitching) ulnar nerve.  This has been going around lately; Brad Penny and Eric Gagne of the Dodgers have both had it, and a few others recently as well.  This is a chronic condition that may require surgery; it sidelined Gagne for all of 2006, and Penny for significant parts of 2005.
  • Street's replacement, Justin Duchscherer, has an arthritic hip, and is expected to be day-to-day, so his ability to close is in question.  More likely, the job goes to Kiko Calero or Alan Embree.
  • Esteban Loiaza has started rehab from his neck problems, and is throwing in extended spring training.
  • Rich Harden is still on the DL with no scheduled return date.  He is throwing, however.  AAA starter Dallas Braden is pitching in his rotation slot.
  • Mark Kotsay is sidelined following back surgery, and is expected back by the All-Star break.
  • Mike Piazza was injured in a collision with Boston 3B Mike Lowell; his sprained shoulder will take 4-6 weeks to heal, likely returning mid-June.
  • Travis Buck (wrist) and Milton Bradley (hamstring) have both returned to the lineup earlier in the month. Bradley also had a right wrist injury that prevented him from swinging from the left side of the plate.
  • Nick Swisher pulled his hamstring in April and returned early in May.
  • Bobby Kielty had a strained left calf and was placed on the 15-day DL on May 1.
  • Dan Johnson hit the 15-day DL on April 10 with a sore neck.
So, they've had a few problems...

How does it affect the team on the field?
  1. Losing Street will hurt
  2. Same if Duchsherer is out
  3. They have been better off without Loiaza.  Their starting has been dominant, he would have given up a few runs.
  4. As good as Harden is, the starting did just fine without him.  I think this time they bring him back as a reliever since Street is out.
  5. Losing Kotsay hurts them like losing Anderson has hurt us.
  6. Losing Piazza has helped them so far- healthy Piazza = no Cust
Finally, Bradley, Swisher, Johnson injuries have hurt.

Add it all up, if this team was 100% healthy they probably don't have that much better record than what they've actually done.

If I went to war and could only take one weapon, it would be an HK47.

But isn't Jack Cust Jesus Christ Incarnate?
That's what we've been hearing from the pressitutes the past week.
