Mariners

The M's are out to a one run lead against Cleveland. If they win this game they will be four games out. I personally do not believe this team will be able to sustain this current run but I have to admit that some doubt is stating to creep in. Is this team for real or merely a flash in the pants?

Can the A's maintain there current run with a majority of their star players on the DL. The series against Boston has given this team new life. Based on our current run we should be up by more then 4.5 games.

Update: Moved over from the Diaries Section - the Mariners won again tonight - and against Cleveland, a damn good AL team, so... is Settle's Sasquatch Mary for real?

90 Wins
Does not appear to be a possibility to me.
I'm giving Figgins a big F U.

2002 Angels
A lot of underrated mashers carrying a barely adequate pitching staff with a competent bullpen and a lights out closer.

I am officially beginning to worry...

by Rev Halofan on Jun 11, 2007 4:59 PM PDT   0 recs

Barely Adequate?
2002 ERA #2 in AL overall.

Starters ERA #4 in AL

Relievers #1 in AL by half a run at 2.98

I'm giving Figgins a big F U.

by hauldog on Jun 11, 2007 5:16 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

2002 Starting staff
wasn't all that good.  They were just good enough, and Darin Erstad made them all look a lot better than they really were, plus Scioscia did a great job of bailing them out any time they got in trouble past the 5th inning.  That bullpen was twice as deep as what we have now.  Shields was only the #4 guy - #5 in playoff time.
If I went to war and could only take one weapon, it would be an HK47.

by RallyMonkey5 on Jun 12, 2007 6:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Barely adequate
Is an overstatement.  I know we did not have an ace, but the #4 ERA in the AL is nothing to turn your nose up at.

Rosenthal says
Mariners' resurgence -- they've averaged 7.35 runs over their last 17 games -- has come against mostly soft opponents. The M's own the fifth-best record in the AL, but it's difficult to take them too seriously when they rank next-to-last in the AL in rotation ERA . . .
I'm giving Figgins a big F U.

Mariners
I think they are legit.  We should be a lil' bit scared.

Frightening
  1. Horacio Ramirez
  2. Miguel Bautista
  3. Jeff Weaver
I almost pissed myself typing this.

Baek is kind of a junk baller as well.

Yeaah.
Ideally with the way we've been playing... we should be Up Up Up in the standings... but we aren't!

So... I'll be honest, I'm a bit concerned. We all know Choakland has their annual hot streak somehow, and Seattle... who knows... mebbe mebbe.

Chart it up! Game on!

It must be fustrating for all 3 clubs
The Angels have been playing solid ball and are only up 4.5. While the Mariners and A's have been winning or the Halos would have pulled away.

I think the Angels are the healthiest and deepest of the 3, but I'm a homer and believe in this team.

The second half of the season should show the strength of depth as fatigue starts to be a factor.

by 1000 Oaks angels fan on Jun 11, 2007 7:13 PM PDT   0 recs

I was thinking
the same thing.  Frustrating cause the Halos are on a strong run and we can't increase our lead cause those fvcks keep winning too.  A's and Mariners have been hot and can't really gain any ground.

Reminds me of last year when we started winning in June - the A's went on a sick run too and we didn't make up the ground we should have.

Friggin Boston has the same wins with double the lead.  Espn still think the east is better?

What? Figgins is playing better? Well, I still don't like him.

The Yanks' resurgence is more pronounced
At their recent win pace, the Yankees ought to catch up to the Red Sox some time in July.  That said, you get a lot of wins by playing the Pirates.  Heck, you do that just playing the NL.

rely on weaver?
any team that has to rely on jeff weaver for anything is doomed. my wife has family friends who are sacramento kings fans and i remember telling them in their heyday (4-5 years ago) that any team that has to rely on chris webber to hit any type of clutch shot and has doug christie as their shooting guard has zero chance. the m's have about the same chance but they will be a pain in our ass.

The Angels have played 64 games.
The Mariners have played 60.

The Angels are 4 games ahead.

If the Mariners were to win all four of the games that were cancelled, the Angels would still lead by 2 games.  That's the way I see it.....we're 2 games ahead.

I'm not reading many "Fire Bavasi and Hargrove" banners lately.

not enough pitching
The Mariners are a solid club, but their pitching is thin.  I like our chances better.

by Johnny Angel on Jun 11, 2007 8:46 PM PDT   0 recs

In relation to the Dan Haren post
Ramirez, Batista, Baek and King Felix have seriously underperformed based on their DIPS ERA - Washburn is their only starter who's ERA looks "about right."

What does that mean?  Maybe nothing...or...it could mean that the Mariners starters are bound to improve over the remainder of the season.

They have a solid lineup, good defense, strong bullpen, and most likely am adequate rotation.  What do they lack?  Depth.  Ben Broussard is the only bench player I would trust in a major league lineup.  So far, they have played the same nine guys, almost exclusively, all season.

If anyone gets hurt, they're toast.  But if they remain healthy, they are going to be giving us fits all year long.  Not the A's.

can't underestimate...
adding the fiery Guillen to an otherwise 'soft' team IMO.  That being said, A) I hate him, B) he will never and should never be an Angel again and I'm glad for that, and C) he very well could be their undoing as well as he's 95% lunatic.

Them hanging around with King Felix not giving them much of anything for the last month or so is scary I must say, and Ichiro is already past his perennial slow start and Beltre is a 2nd half guy, Sexson has been terrible, etc.

Ok, I talked myself into being frightened.

by thewebb on Jun 11, 2007 9:26 PM PDT   0 recs

I wouldn't worry too much.
I'm pretty sure the Angels have assumed the role of "team we'll never beat" that Oakland made so popular a year ago.

Neptune's minions
They have some talent on the team.  Don't forget that is an extreme run lowering enviroment there, so their hitters are better than you think.

Ichiro is inhuman out there in CF, he is running everything down and has a great arm as we know.  I figured when they made the Vidro trade they must have known something, and maybe they did.

That being said, their GM is an idiot.  I'm sure their flaws will doom them in the end.

by elricsi on Jun 12, 2007 8:56 AM PDT   0 recs

Vidro
Being a DH keeps him healthy and he can hit singles, but he has zero power.  I'm glad they aren't using the DH spot to get more AB from Ben Broussard.  Their lineup is really good though, especially since they are doing it in a pitchers park.  If Richie Sexson hits it will be scary.  Johjima is a big key hitting .330 with power since most teams get nothing out of the catcher spot.  With him and the young, developing middle infielders they can afford average corner guys like Ibanez, Guillen, and Beltre.
If I went to war and could only take one weapon, it would be an HK47.

right-handed hitters.  Safeco is murder on right-handed power hitters thanks to a long left porch, and the cool air doesn't help, either.

Agree with Rev
Even though the Mariners appear to be for real we seem to have their number this year. As long as that trend continues then we will win the division. With regards to their pitching I believe it is enough to win the division if they continue to hit the way they are right know.

by AMB07 on Jun 12, 2007 9:49 AM PDT   0 recs

M's comments overall
  • True, their starting rotation once you get past 1-3 is awfully flaky.  In fact, only Jarrod Washburn has an ERA+ above 100 (< 100 = below league average). That said, and from memory, the M's might have better options waiting in the minors.
  • J.J. Putz is the best closer in the division.  He reminds me of Gagne circa 2002-2004.  (And Gagne is looking awfully good again with the Rangers, with an otherworldly 0.56 ERA.)
  • Beltre seems to be having a season somewhere between the mediocre years he had with the Dodgers prior to 2004, and his superstar 2004.  That is, he's a legitimate power threat (.267/.311/.467 overall in 2007, and .306/.342/.577, though the Padres did a very good job shutting him down in their weekend series).
  • Ichiro is Ichiro!
  • Kenji Johjima is just kicking ass at catcher.
  • Yunieski Betancourt is having a breakout season despite leading the majors in errors by a shortstop (14 already).

but looking at the record, Putz has around half Frankie's WHIP, and is striking out batters at six times the rate he's walking them.  They have pretty comparable strikeout rates.

HOW LONG
until Washburn's forearm starts aching midseason like it always seemed to when he was an Angel?

by Rev Halofan on Jun 12, 2007 12:18 PM PDT   0 recs

Something Tells Me
that the M's are going to hang around.  Are they good enough to win the division....well, if they are good enough to hang around until the end, then I would not be surprised.  I have always felt that they could be the biggest surprise in the AL this year (exluding the Yankees tank job, which will happen).

The A's will always be the A's, so I would expect them to have their annual run, but fade towards the end of the season.  By fading, that doesn't mean that they won't win the division depending upon the Halo's play.  If the Angels continue at 70% of what they are currently doing on this most recent pace they are on, then they will Win the west.

3 teams over .500 in the AL West
only three other teams over .500 in the rest of the league. This division is going to be a bitch to win for whoever ends up winning it and frustrating as hell for the two that don't

Interesting the way the troll conveniently disappears when his team's success does, but magically reappears with a whopping 3 day span of success.

That said, I do love "friendly" banter back and forth, and also, I'm going to really appreciate mocking you when your team still finishes in 3rd place after 162 games have been played.

Mariners think they're good
And that's bad news for the Angels.  After finishing in last place and at least 15 games out of first for three straight years, the Mariners have a good shot at winning the AL West.  Even if they don't win the West, they could take the Wild Card.
