Figgy's recent hot streak thanks to Haynes

According to an article in LA Daily News Figgins credits some batting advice given to him by Nathan Haynes for his recent resurgence after his two-day benching:

"The things he said were real important because it's not your at-bats or the things you're doing wrong but to just try something different," Figgins said. "What he told me has been working."

Neither one is giving specifics on what words of wisdom Nate shared with Chone.

Stop sucking, slap the damn ball. Stop listening to GA and Hatcher.

That's real close...
...but what he actually said was, "if you don't start hitting (and fielding) I am going to take you f'ing job and they are going to ship you to Kansas City..."
Stop swinging at balls out of the zone!

Probably went something like this:
Haynes:  Hey Figgy why are you crying during BP?
Figgins: Mike won't play me, wahhhhh!
Haynes:  Dude, STFU, do you realize how lucky you are?  I dream every night about getting called up to the bigs to have Sosh bench me.  This is awesome!
Figgins:  Really?
Haynes:  Yea man.  You better watch out or Stoneman will say Beetlejuice 3x real fast and you'll find yourself back in Salt Lake.  Let me tell you AAA sucks.  So get out there and take BP and stop crying.

Then Figgins went on to take BP seriously and without tears in his eyes and actually started hitting the ball.  The end.

It seems
as though he's hitting more line drives through holes or over infielders. Part of that is luck, but part of that is not trying to hit the ball over the fence, resulting in weak fly balls or pop ups.

what does say about hatcher/figgins
hatcher has done a good job turning around napoli and kotchman recently but you don't think hatcher tried to help him out, it's only his job. still figgins would rather listen to a guy who didn't have a single mlb at bat until 7-10 ago. i'm glad that he turned his swing around, it's great for the team but i think since he signed the extension before last season his attitude has totally changed.

Just to stir the pot....
if Mickey was black, would Chone listen?

Lol, yeah you are probably right

Could very well be
That it's not a race thing, but a "mickey hatcher is a crazy cook thing, and I'm not listening to him anymore".

I dunno.

Figgy
Won't listen to Maury Wills...

I think that says enough.

EXACTLY
I'm giving Figgins a big F U.

by hauldog on Jun 8, 2007 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

That he's sane?
Maury Wills has been giving the same self-glorifying lecture for more than three decades now. One of Figgy's problems has probably been that he's listened too much, by bunting his fool head off when he's just not a good bunter.

And listen, you just-slap-the-ball-on-the-ground fanatics -- there's a reason Herb Washington didn't stick in the bigs (and wasn't even, in fact, a particularly good base-stealer). If speed, slapping, and left-handedness were all that you needed to be a successful big-league hitter, then Morris Nettles shoulda been da bomb.

Slap-and-run works for about two players -- Ichiro and Luis Castillo. Ichiro can flat-out hit, and Castillo has a lower career OPS+ than ... Chone Figgins! Mostly because Figgins can actually drive the ball, too.

Dear Matt with two T's
i hate the softball style of slapping the ball around.  I agree with you.

I was referencing Maury Wills offering to help Shawn learn how to bunt the ball.

Got it
Weirdly, I don't think it's from lack of effort (Figgy's bunting deficit). Otherwise why would he work on it every damned spring, and bunt way too damned much during the season? Is it possible that some people just can't become good bunters?

by mattwelch on Jun 8, 2007 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Go start another newspaper in Prague...
I just really wish that Figgy would learn the art of bunting, especially on this station to station team.

I think it is a craft that can be learned and one that you can excel at.  You don't have to pop up every time you try to bunt.

PHIL supports me on this one.

ha
PHIL was da bomb.  i loved those little charts.

WTF
Probably as much to do with the distance between him and his injury as with any advice he got from Haynes.
Ervin Santana To AAA! (But only for road games.)

by scareduck on Jun 8, 2007 4:57 PM PDT reply actions

maybe haynes can teach him to bunt
he's the most likely guy who can get through to him.

by thejd on Jun 8, 2007 5:30 PM PDT reply actions

...and....
teach him how to take a route to a flyball, stop hitting lazy flyballs, and stop swinging for the fences when you are 5'6"....
Stop swinging at balls out of the zone!
