I hear

Can't be  good for his fielding.

i'm not totally familiar with this game played with feet that is called "soccer." i don't think it will catch on, let's see how receptive the rest of the world is to this game played with your feet.

He won
both starting positions back, and led Real to the La Liga championship. If you're going to bash the guy at least use facts.

It is okay if you don't like soccer, but I find it immensely funny that you bash Beckham. He is more widely known throughout the world than ARod and MJ combined. -->arguably America's best known athletes. Typical American attitude... and people wonder why the world hates us.

because, I like most Americans, could give two shits about soccer that is for sure.

Nice "use of facts."

Replace washed up with past his prime.  My opinion is that soccer is not rising because this guy is going to play for the galaxy

He may
very well be past his prime, but that didn't stop Real from trying to reaquire him. That would lead me to think he's still able to play well above average.

I would opine that you are very typical of Americans... me first and f the rest of the world.

Further, soccer is on the rise in the US. There are new soccer-only stadiums and franchises, as well as growth in youth leagues. Like it or not, the sport is gaining momentum.

I love baseball, but it is no longer the most important sport in this country. Football is king, and Basketball and (gasp) Nascar are gaining a lot of popularity. I wouldn't be surprised within the next generation to see Baseball pushed more towards a secondary sport (akin to Hockey.)

Your blanket statement that soccer fucking sucks makes you culturally challenged at best.

Derrrrr
First of all, I never said soccer sucks.

Second of all, you started this whole "if you don't like soccer then you're a provincial, self-centered American," which makes absolutely no fucking sense at all.

Third, you make these non-sequiter assertions and then when hauldog calls you on them you avoid the issue and his questions by addressing the least important part of his responses ("i'm not down with socialism")

Your copouts are so obvious. You're like the kid who would say, "Oh I don't want to fight you because I don't want to hurt." You can't even back your shit up.

I mistook
you for higz. Sorry, it was his masterpiece 'soccer blows'.

I suggest that if you're not at least aware of the most important sport in the world, then perhaps you are provincial... american-centric is probably closer to my feelings however.

As for not addressing your concerns fully enough, I would disagree. He suggested that I was too young to understand. To which I replied that while being middle aged certainly doesn't directly equate with wisdom, it at least provides perspective. I added the bit about socialism because it was suggested by the poster.

If there is anything else you'd like to know, I have never backed away. If you're right, I don't mind saying so. If you're wrong, I'll say that as well. If you're an idiot, I won't hesitate to say that either.

Have I sufficiently 'backed it up', or would you like to settle this on the playground.

That was not meant as a dig about your age, but rather a comment on the depth to which this has dewvolved.

Errant and stupid is subjective
If you say that Soccer is a great sport, to me that is as errant and stupid as one could get, but then again it's just an opinion.

My belief is that the fucking field is at least twice as big as it should be and that the game is nothing but a continous series of turnovers. There aren't even that many scoring chances let alone actual scoring.

It's like darts and billiards, fun to play but godawful to watch. In England they don't even leave their seats to piss. They just piss in their empty cups so they won't chance missing the only fucking scoring in the entire fucking 60 minutes.

Soccer
will always be a minor sport in this country unless and until it gets the big TV paydays enjoyed by the NFL, NBA and MLB.  Yes, MLB still rakes in a ton of dough.

It doesn't matter how many people are playing it, or even watching it in person.  It's the media coverage that makes something a major sport, as far as I'm concerned.

17 percent
of the world's homes watched the world cup finals. World cup viewership in the US was up 200 percent since 2002. The world series ratings were at a record low. You don't have to be a sabrematrician to figure out what the world wants to see.
Lamest poster of all-time.

by ineptituderunsamok on Jul 13, 2007 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's easy
to increase viewership by 200% when you've got only 2 viewers to begin with.

But seriously, even though baseball ratings have declined, the numbers are still overwhelming.  Even recently, the typical WS game has pulled in anywhere from 10-15 million viewers in the U.S., while the best soccer has mustered so far is about 2.6 million.

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/ws/wstv.shtml

I've been unable to locate numbers on foreign viewership of baseball.

Soccer still has a very long way to go before it can even hope of being on equal financial footing as the major sports, but there's no question that it's headed in the right direction.

I doubt that it will ever get there, though, unless there is a major shift in how the sport is run.  It's just too fragmented.

True
except that as soccer rises in popularity on these shores, baseball's reach is expanding globally.  They're starting to play baseball in China, and throughout eastern & western Europe.

Given how many major league baseball players come from Central & South America, I suspect that the game is pretty popular in those parts of the world, too.

One advantage soccer has for young kids, especially those who are impoverished, is that you basically need only one piece of equipment (a ball), and a whole mess of kids can play.

Wow
It really takes a group of ignorant folks to not recognize that there is at least some significance in Beckham's playing in the United States. I grew up playing soccer, have watched soccer all my life, and soccer is the only sport for which I will turn off an Angels game. I respect that most in this country don't find the appeal, and that's fine. What's cowardly, moronic, and downright ignorant is to bash the sport outright. Yeah, because hitting a little ball with a stick and running in a circle makes a lot of damn sense too.

If you want to understand the significance of having a world-known, well-respected player moving to the equivalent of a AA league on the world soccer stage, look at the season ticket numbers across the board in MLS. Particularly the Galaxy. Look at the viewership numbers for the World Cup last year. Anyone who thinks soccer isn't on the rise is an ignorant fool, and anybody who thinks that Beckham, old as he may be, playing for the Galaxy isn't going to help, should really reconsider calling himself a "sports person."

Neither I nor the rest of the world really gives a flying fuck about what Americans think about soccer. It doesn't matter. We, as Americans, over hype our own importance on the worldwide sporting stage. Just because we've grown up watching football and baseball doesn't diminish the importance of soccer worldwide.

I personally look forward to the day when MLS is an established, respected league. I look forward to the day when Americans hoist the World Cup. But I don't need to hear a bunch of whiny kids complaining about a media circus.

It's simple. If you don't like soccer, don't watch it. If you think Beckham wasn't worth it and is only here for Hollywood, fine. The rest of the world will manage.

Couldn't Agree More
but I wouldn't turn off a Halos game for soccer.

I actually got into a pretty lengthy argument with someone at a bar during the World Cup (which I enjoy watching).  Guy was talking about soccer sucks, its retarded, and all the things some other here have mentioned but it is the biggest most watched game in the world.  If you are a true sports fan - you can't deny the fact that soccer is the most popular sport in the world and have at least an interest in it.

I know alot of people who won't watch a single baseball game until the world series because they say it is too slow - too boring - or whatever.  I don't go around calling them idiots - thats just what they feel and they don't want to take the time to learn or pay attention to all the little things that go on durnig a game that we all here enjoy about the game.

As a sports fan - I do think soccer is gaining momentum and I think that Beckham is a great move to bring recognition to the game.  I hope that the MLS continues to grow in audience and talent because as a sports fan/freak - I would love to have another sport to follow and cheer for.

What? Figgins is playing better? Well, I still don't like him.

try hockey... MLB, NFL, NHL fan here.
I was never really into it hardcore (watching games here and there since the Ducks birth), until I played NHL2k6. Now I watch every period of every Ducks game as much as I can. You realize the strategy involved and all the cool random fighting and now I'm a dedicated fan.

I hate Basketball because of all the LAME foul calls and free throws but that's another topic to discuss.

haha
I made the idiotic decision to start caring about Northeastern sports, and it pulled me into college hockey, and now I'm even more demoralized when we lost to BC and BU.
East coast bias

LOTTA EAST COAST FOLKS WHINED
over the coverage of the Ducks' Stanley Cup.

I respect Soccer a lot more than NASCAR/Formula One as well as Arena Football.

I find it boring but a lot of people find baaseball boring and I can live with that.

But I don't get the whole uniform sponsorship - recall that baseball fans made an outcry over spiderman lgos on the bases for ONE GAME and got their way. And America is supposedly the bastion of corporate greed????

And by the way, as far as being the #2 sport .... if the NFL had 162 games the average attendance would be 6,000 a game and the teevee ratings would be nonexistent. I am not buying the #2 arguments - baseball is always there for its fans for 7 months out of the year and the composite numbers are king.

IMagine Vlad Guerrero
signing as a free agent for boo-Koo bux in three years with a team in a new Chinese League that was the equivalent of a AA team here.

I would buy theri merchandise, watch their games on satellite as I am a big Vlad fan. Now imagine Jeter doing the same thing - how many Yankee fans would watch? That is what the Galaxy and their league are doing. It is a briliantt marketing thing to do.

Soccer is a great sport...
Those guys are tremendous athletes and I have a lot of respect for what they do.

But it's just boring as hell to watch.

Any sport that has so many games end 1-0 is just not going to be that popular in American society.  Yes, I know some baseball games end with that score, but in general there's much more scoring in baseball than soccer.

Like Rev said, this Beckham thing is some brilliant marketing, but it's not going to make soccer a mainstream sport in America.

Are you kidding?
Like the final score has anything to do with it.  Some of the greatest games in MLB history have been low scoring.  Just this month, we had a 1-1 pitchers duel between Lackey and Clemens.  If you can't appreciate the game for what it is without all the gratuitous scoring, then I can't say I consider you a serious fan of any sport.

106 comments? Seriously?
On a related note, my wife was there today at the press conference. She said the mayor was booed lustily (so to speak), and Beckham is "totally hot, and also gracious."

But seriously, 106 comments?

Why Soccer Sucks
1. Games end in a tie. 0-0 is a final score.
2. Hooligans like to fight.
3. Soccer players fake injuries to draw penalties
4. I could play mid field for Manchester and no one would know I have no idea what I'm doing.
5. No game clock. Official keep track of time with a stop watch.
6. Penalty kicks are like batting practice.
7. You can't use your hands

While soccer may be the post popular sport in the majority of non-US countries, the rate of disease, poverty and suppression of human rights is also higher in non-US countries.

It tastes like toast
Besides the fuck you's, the JC debate team, college student's abroad blast, ineptitude making hualdog and higz one and the same, and the veiled discounting of the CSU system, as well as Matt's wife thinking the Beckham is hot; this might be the lamest post of this whole thread.

I get that you are trying to make fun of soccer and generally it's well deserved.  But at least try to be original.

1-6 can be applied to most the major sports in the USA.  Except for number 4, which is just ridiculous, although i would love to see it.

And i dig some of your silly photos that you post on the blog.

but with more scoring and fighting!
no gay sliding kicks to the shins to get red carded like in soccer.

Go Galaxy!
I am a fan, but I ain't running out to buy tickets now that I am "supposed to" with this big marketing ploy.

I am looking for an old school Mauricio Cienfuegos or Cobi Jones jersey, not a posh spice jersey.

GO GALAXY!
