More fun in the new Win Shares

The Hardball Times has a pretty recent tabulation of 2007 Win Shares (through 8/10), for those of us who care about such things. A couple of things that jump out at me:

  1. I still can't believe anyone, let alone Vladdy, is within shouting distance of Alex Rodriguez.... Vlad's already matched his total of last year, and is within shouting distance of breaking the magical (to me) 30 Win Share mark for the first time in his career (he basically gets 29 most every year, for whatever reason).
  2. There was a time on this site, during the offseason I think, where I mentioned that, judging by Win Shares, Vernon Wells just wasn't consistently any more impressive than Chone Figgins. For this I was called a knave and worse. Anyhoo, Chone has 17 (making him the 2nd rated 3Bman in the league), while Vernon has 14 -- the exact same amount as Gary Matthews, Jr.
  3. O-Cab, who earlier this year was among the league leaders, has really slipped, though he's still among the top 3 shortstops.
  4. Kotchman has the same amount (14) as Konerko, in less playing time.
  5. The top AL starting pitchers are a scrum; Haren had 17 as of Friday, Escobar & Bedard 16, and Lackey was at 14.
