[UPDATE] Tigers to sign Porcello to record $7.3 million deal

UPDATE: Matt Harvey threw two complete game wins in the Connie Mack World Series that took place in New Mexico. His fastball, supposedly, was clocked around 95 miles per hour. Can we just sign this kid already? Please!

What, you ask, does this have to do with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? It means that the player the Angels took in the third round, Matt Harvey, will be getting a deal worth about three to four million dollars less. Matthew Harvey had talent comparable to Rick Porcello. Some scouts even went as far as to say that Harvey had better talent than Porcello. He was a projected top ten pick, with every scouting service having him go in the first round. So, Porcello signed the biggest guaranteed deal for a high school player. That means that the Angels are going to have to shell out some money to get Matthew Harvey. Do I wish that they would do that? Yes I do. Do I think that they will do that? Probably not. He was touted as the steal of the draft for the Angels. I can only hope that Eddie Bane and the Angels management get him signed before the August 15th deadline.

Anyone think we get him signed before the 15th? There's only about 47 hours left to get all the picks signed. I hate this new deadline.

doubtful we get him now. They will want 5 million easy and Boras is whispering in MH's ear why not go the heck to Tarheel land.

Major League Deal
What does that mean?  His clock starts now?
I'm giving Figgins a big F U. Seattle isn't winning 90. I am not worried.

Yes, exactly
I.e., repeating (maybe) the Mark Prior Mistake.
Hoping Ervin Santana turns it around in Salt Lake. Go, Ervin!

Welcome to inflation and high school talent
The Tigers gave up too much money for Porcello, or at least it seems that way. You have to remember, he has great talent and he should have never fallen that far in the draft. Same situation with Matt Harvey. The Angels said that if they were to sign Matt Harvey, they would pay him what they thought his talent level deserved not what his draft spot said he deserved. The Angels should just open up the checkbook for him. What's the harm? We invested $2.75-million in Hector Carrasco. There is no way that Matt Harvey, if he reaches the majors which isn't that big of an "if", will not be worse than Hector Carrasco was this season. We gave Jered Weaver a $4-million dollar amateur signing bonus. Offer Matt Harvey the same or a little more. His talent level would command that much.

Agree
but the Porcello contract will have a rippling effect obviously.

I am pretty sure the Angels knew what they were getting into when they drafted Harvey, this isn't Bane's first rodeo.  The 7.3 might not be what they expected though

Risky
Each high school pitcher is a huge risk, but many of the best pitchers were drafted as high schoolers.  You need to sign a lot of them and hope a few work out (quality from quantity, the Braves philosophy).

Giving that much money to any one HS chucker seems insane to me.

Harvey
There was only a very small chance he would have signed with the Angels because of his up and down season.  Not to mention he is not in the same conversation with Rick Porcello.  Harvey is a good young arm but Porcello was head and shoulders above Harvey from the beginning.
