Manny and Pappy

We came close to winning tonites game.  Ortiz and Manny sunk us at two different crucial junctions of the game.  I for one believe they are the only two players on that team worth a damn.  Is it time to start walking these guys in crucial situations, i.e. with the bases loaded or when we are trying to keep the game close ?

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Uh, walk Papi with the bases juiced?
And then we did walk him and Manny busted out with a 2-run double.  You can't beat those guys.

After Ortiz's bat flip, though, I strongly suggest an inside statement pitch.  No, not throwing at him, just a brush back.  That was unprofessional and downright childish.

I was surprised by that bat flip
and by Ortiz's whole attitude after that slam. I'd always respected him in the past for his lack of apparent belligerence. Anyone else feel this way, or have I just not been paying attention?

I bring this up because sudden belligerence in a player always makes me suspicious of juicing activity; e. g., Bret Boone.

Is that the usual routine for Ortiz?
Flipping his bat, standing there watching the ball, while going at a snail's pace to first?  Best response?  Beat the Red Sox.  (NOTE: Jered Weaver was ticked off at Ortiz's theatrics.)

As far as being on juice?  Probably yes.  Where was this power with the Twins?  Lucky he showed none of it when the Angels beat the Twins in the ALCS.

Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!

I forgot who it was but there was a pitcher
who never gave up a grand slam, or almost never gave up a grand slam.  And he said he did it by walking a lot of guys.

It happens
Bob Melvin walked Bonds with the bases loaded in the late states of a 2 run game a few seasons back. Got the next batter out, won the game.

I have to say I was appalled
by Weaver's postgame quote:

"With the bases loaded with the heat of their order coming up, what are you going to do?"

Well, what you do is, you make the guy try to beat you. You do not serve one right down the middle to David Ortiz.

Pitch him down and in or down and away and you've got a chance to get him to hit into a DP. Worse case scenario, you bounce one in the dirt and give up a WP.

I can't see why Weav thought he could blow Papi away with high heat (hardly anyone can) and he never mentioned that it was a "mistake" pitch.

Oh well, it was just one game. ... sigh hopefully Weav will pull it back together in his next start.

It wasn't high heat
It was low and sort-of in, but he left it a tad too far out over the inside of the plate which allowed Ortiz to wrap it around the pole.
