Face of the Franchise

ESPN asked four people to name the face of the Angels' franchise:
Jerry Crasnick, Doug Padilla, Eric Young and Me.

Each day this week, they will premiere an essay on who the Face of the Franchise is for the Angels. Mine arrived today.

Wow, congrats Rev
That's pretty cool getting your work on ESPN.  Now you just need to figure out a way to slip in some sort of crack about the East coast bias.

We're going mainstream... We're
selling out like green day.  No more slump busters! The Disney empire owns us once again!

:)

Congratulations Rev.

Cool beans.
Who in the hell made that poll though? They have Bartolo but not John Lackey?! WTF?

by Higz on Aug 20, 2007 12:10 PM PDT reply actions

I wondered
Who Mat Gleason from HH is?  It's the Rev!  Why couldn't they put you down as Rev Halofan?  Anyway, I bet it's pretty cool to have you name on ESPN next to Crasnick, Doug Padilla and Eric Young.  Congrats!

by SactoFan on Aug 20, 2007 12:11 PM PDT reply actions

Maybe ESPN was affected by our comments
and has decided to start throwing in a little west coast opinion.  GO REV!

by BruinHalo on Aug 20, 2007 12:12 PM PDT reply actions

gleason?
this is just like the seinfeld epsiode that was on last night when the crew found out kramer's first name was cosmo.

by thejd on Aug 20, 2007 12:14 PM PDT reply actions

this is a tough choice...
VLADIMIR GUERRERO.
Bad Shields makes me unhappy...

by CaLiKrAzY on Aug 20, 2007 12:14 PM PDT reply actions

There would be no Vladdy
without Moreno.

If ever I wonder if Moreno has redefined what it is to be an Angel, I think back to all the empty pink seats in the mid 90s

by BruinHalo on Aug 20, 2007 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Do we get a hint?
Can you at least give us the guys' initials?

by bc56274 on Aug 20, 2007 12:19 PM PDT reply actions

I clicked on the Angels logo
with hesitance because I was going to be pissed if they used any other fan/blogger besides you Rev.  I was very pleased to see your (real) name show up.

Like Higz said, how the hell is Lackey not on that list and Bartolo is?

I think Arte would be a good choice...

by agermer on Aug 20, 2007 1:07 PM PDT reply actions

So Rev is now shilling for ESPN?
Hey Rev, WHY DON'T YOU SPEND MORE DAMNED TIME COVERING THE ANGELS???

Actually, I think that the coolest part of this news is that they went to the Halos Heaven blog, and not the OC Register or the LA Times!!

AHHHHH  HA  HA HA  ha ha ha hahahahahahahahahaha....

(P.S. - Vladdie by a mile, with Sosh second and Arte a close third.)

by Stirrups on Aug 20, 2007 1:21 PM PDT reply actions

When are you moving to Bristol?
Good job, Rev...way to represent!

Very nice
Congratulations on your recognition by the Worldwide leader.
I'm giving Figgins a big F U. Seattle isn't winning 90. I am not worried.

What picture are you going to use?
Maybe the "win" pic from yesterday?

good to see the PHIL still out there. a great stat.

by yeswecan on Aug 20, 2007 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

here you go
PHIL ratings for last night's game, the season, and the league averages:

by yeswecan on Aug 21, 2007 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Excellent job.
The high Performance (4.2!) and Heart ratings are no doubt a result of Chone Figgins being off the charts in those two categories this season. The fans and his teamates owe a lot to that little PHIL machine for such an envious score.

I don't think anyone could argue that the Angels aren't the best team in baseball with such an authoritative stat as PHIL. All the proof you need is right here in this graph, folks.

by Higz on Aug 21, 2007 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Ha, holy shit
I voted on this earlier today and noticed there was some douche spelling his name 'Mat' with one 't'. I didn't even think about it being you.

Also, the ESPN ECB obviously came up with this; they take our superstar elite offensive player and almost literally no one else. Bart? No sir, never will be. Chone? Because he's been hitting pretty well lately? The fuck? Arte? No. He's the quiet Steinbrenner, remember? And Franky, well, he's a beast and everyone loves his cutter, but he's not the face.

Without mention of biggies like OC, Lackey and forgetting the phenomenal talents like Escy, Kotch, and WTY is just simply not recognizing the team itself, rather than just the face of the franchise.

In any case I voted for Vlad as he's got the most commercial clout (Pepsi, Mastercard), though he's a quiet spoken and gentle giant.

by shiftyeyedgoat on Aug 20, 2007 2:40 PM PDT reply actions

Also
watching the LLWS right now and about 5 kids from the New England (wtf?) team said that Vladdy was their favorite player.

Not one from the Oregon team mentioned a single Angel.

Maybe they are leftover Expos fans?
Peut-être?

Wow, no Lackey in the poll?
He would have been my choice.  Either him or Frankie.  Holdovers from 2002 who played huge roles, and are starring today.

by LA Seitz on Aug 20, 2007 3:31 PM PDT reply actions

No kidding
Lackey was the winning pitcher in game 7.

Kudos to ESPN
For getting it right. Is it a case of the blind squirrel, or are they actually starting to understand how to cover baseball?

In any event, congrats, Rev, for the recognition.

. . .and the young lions will lock horns!

That's part of it, man. Not to be discounted.
(pun intended)

In the same way that Napster showed the way to slay the music industry, so too does the blogosphere show the way to slay the old media giants. (Just in time, too, what with the corporate take-over of the news conduits...)

Big money or none, you are part of the deal, Rev. Your efforts allow me to personalize the programming of my daily sports page. ESPN must bow down to reality.

Where's Scoscia?
Scoscia has been the coach for every day of the Angels renaissance.

by gohalos on Aug 21, 2007 1:00 AM PDT reply actions

Big John or Scoscia
Though, it is so definitely Arte's ballclub, I could see that working too.

by The Limey on Aug 21, 2007 3:16 AM PDT reply actions

Mike
Scioscia is the man behind our success and sets the tone for the way we play. But can an ex-Dodger really be "face of the franchise?" Hmmmmn.

Congrats, Rev -- just a word from one who has been in the "mainstream" media for 20 years -- no random f-bombs, dude, if you want to put it on your CV ;)

Excellent.
Well done on a very concise and accurate assessment of our silent superstar.  I doubt any baseball fan can argue that Vladdy's trademark heavenward gesture will be a regular addition to highlight montages for generations to come.

Also, congratulations on the long-awaited recognition that all of us, your HH devotees, have anticipated.

by HeyLegacy on Aug 22, 2007 10:47 AM PDT reply actions

Good selection!
I would have picked The Singing Cowboy.

Rev, I think you captured the essence of Vlad and why so many fans think so highly of him. In an era of celebrity, he is a modest superstar who loves playing the game of baseball that we played as a child. Good work.

by tanana40 on Aug 22, 2007 12:40 PM PDT reply actions

I agree with the others who say Mike
We are currently in the Mike Scioscia era.  I believe he best represents what the Angels represent.
I should be working right now...

Pretty good but the one other thing we DO
know about Vladdy is that his mother feeds Dominican players from other teams when she's not feeding the Halos.

Arte and Vlad.  Perfect.

I love the Stoneman and Sosh combo, but Arte and Vlad are completely indespensable.

Eric Young
Vlad fields the position better than 95% of the players?  Huh-What?
