Foul Language in the Game Posts

Guys and the three ladies that frequent here:  I love your passion.  I enjoy the comraderie.  However, I kindly ask EVERYONE to tone down on the F bombs and foul language being hurled constantly, especially during game threads.

I have a 9 year old and 7 year old who both are great readers... no matter how fast I scroll down the screen, they are catching it.  So, I am finding that I have to turn off halosheaven until post-game time when they have gone to bed.

I am not asking you to be less emotional about our beloved Angels, but instead of spelling out the word, try this" "f'ing A" or "mother F" -- it's shorter as such can be typed much faster than the entire word.

Thanks for your time and understanding.  Let's nip this in the bud before the "powers that be" end up creating a rule about it, which would be a bummer.

Let us not abuse the privelege that SportsBlog Nation and the Rev have bestowed upon us.

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Your "thoughts" affect my family...
sorry if you feel I am violating your right to pollute the minds of my children prematurely.

Also, if you really hate our players and coaches so much, why bother being a fan?

With that kind of diatribe, you stoop as low, if not lower than the level of Yankees and Red Sox and A's fans that precede you.  Show some class and don't just be a bunch of slobbering nonesense billowers.

Quit yer whinin' and START CHEERING!

So true
Also, if you really hate our players and coaches so much, why bother being a fan?
Those are the type of comments that have changed the way this site feels, and seems to be chasing the original crowd away from game the threads. These are the posters that made you sign up and make you feel that this was the site you wanted to support your team with.

This is a fan site not a bitching place. If you want to bitch and moan, please go somewheres else.

All the slur is fine by me, when it is used at a meaningful time, but the newer ones to the site think typing that way all the time makes them look mature, and feel important.

If you want to look, and feel, big just pick up intrenet smoking.

Very Good Point
This is not jsut HAlos HEaven - many many fan sites get caught up in the YOU ARE TOO NEGATIVE (therefore not a true fan) posts balanced with YOUR OPTIMISIM IS JUST STUPIDITY (i am aneutral analyst who is not really fan) posts.

There is no happy medium, things sway back and forth - some poeple just will not be silenced and end up being stubborn jerks - whether they are witht eh FUCKY FUCK POO POO WE SUCK school of of thought or the BE GLAD WE LOVE THIS TEAM'S IN ITS FAMILY-FRIENDLY VIRTUOUS WAY crowd.

Neither is as open minded as they would have you believe - one wants freedom of speech so they can shit all over civility and the other says make it family friendly and then we will have a meeting to establish 1,700 more rules to invade your time here.

The key is civility. We all go overboard, we all get aggro, we all expresss ourselves differnlty.

Be excellent to each other and party on.

Posting
I don't post to often anymore and rarely in the game threads but I can not stand the thought of being censored because someone can't control/raise/relate to their children.  If I wanted to worry about children I would have one of my.  I don't so I haven't.  This is the internet.  There is no promise that content on the internet will be family friendly and it is a parents job to teach children what is appropriate and what is inappropriate.

YOUR FAMILY IS AFFECTING MY THOUGHTS.

F***** curse words
I imagine even young children have heard the basic curse words, so seeing one here and there is probably no biggie.

I guess we should try to limit it to 1 or 2 per post at most.  Also, the creative and imaginative curse word combinations are probably best to leave out, as young minds may not have heard all of those.

What I have never understood
is why it would be OK to say f&%* but not fuck.  I mean, everyone knows exactly what the former means.  Is someone going to die because they see three letters?

Folks, they're just words.  They only bother you if you want them to bother you.

George Carlin has explained it far more eloquently (and with much more humor) than I, but nobody dies from words.

I understand not wanting your kids to use certain words.  The way I see it, part of raising and educating them is to explain that certain types of language are considered inappropriate or in bad taste, and can reflect poorly upon you if you use them in the wrong context.

But it's pure folly to think that nobody's going to know what you mean if you write f'ing, or some variation of that.  Everyone knows what letters are missing, and nobody will suffer any injury simply from seeing (or hearing) them.

I would think it would be easier....
.....to police your children instead of an entire blog community.

Just let the kids watch some porn or something, that'll keep them busy.

My suggestion would be to use firefox and install the profanity filter plug-in.

The bottom line is that this is a site that has earned the respect and admiration (and ha ha, the fucking envy) of a lot of people and I feel like there is a standard to be met and held accountable to.

One more thing...
as this great site gets more and more attention, I think we owe it to Rev to be more mature about our posts.  A lot of people are watching.  This site is rapidly becoming the best on SBNation and we who populate it speak volumes about WHO ANGELS FANS ARE.  We are not a bunch of foul mouthed jerks.

We all took offense that Joe Saunders' own mother was harrassed at Fenway.  Let's not become a bunch of people who would do that.

Phil Hughes is a local kid who pitched for the Yankees last night.  I would have applauded his performance when he was pulled out of the game as a respectful fan of the game.  And, I certainly would have been respectful to his family if they were sitting near me.

Jeez
He only had a simple request to tone it down and I don't have a problem with it.  I don't need to lob f-bombs to get my point across and kids are polluted enough by pop culture, why do we need to do it here?  It is not so much censorship as much as it is civility.

If the only way folks on here can get their point across, whehter angry or joyed, is to lob f-bombs and other four letter words then take some English classes and learn some new words.

I'm not a parent but I am respectful of them.

by SactoFan on Aug 21, 2007 10:27 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That's valid
I'm not offended by language; words are words.  But the excessive use of certain kinds of words does reflect poorly on one's level of civility and the extent of one's vocabulary.  On that point, I agree.

I'm with DR on this one
I can (and do) drop the F bomb with the best of them, but I don't do it in the stands at the game because there are families there who have spent their hard earned dollars and coud be offended.

The thought police comments are crap.  This is just a request for moderation and perhaps a bit of creativity.  The best posters on this site are witty, clever and funny without the F Bomb.

The anarchistic vulgarity did not draw me to this site, the passion for the Angels did.  Let's not make this a site where it's only appropriate for fans over the age of whatever.

Agree with DR as well.
'Thought police'?  How idiotic.

Be vulgar if you want, but it's just a tedious bore.

This site would probably attract more fans if you didn't have to constantly read cussing or some imbecile with an IQ lower than Chone Figgins HR total feeling the need to point out something is 'gay' or this player is a 'fag' or some such stupidity.

And anyway, you end up looking like a Red Sox or Yankees fan. Why would you want that?

by lafan30 on Aug 21, 2007 11:07 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not OK to to use homophobic slurs...
but it is OK to make fun of people with below average intelligence? They can't help it either. Why would they choose to be dumb? They just want to live in a world where simpletons are accepted for who they are.

by Higz on Aug 21, 2007 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uh...
I lob F-bombs at work all the time and it's not due to below average intelligence; but we're all adults around my job and my co-worker's get a kick out of it.  Now, when a co-workers' kid's are around, instead of an F-bomb, I say "fudge", or some other made up word to substitute.

If I left the impression of making fun of lesser IQ's, my apologies, it wasn't my intent.  In fact, I'm barely over an imbecile myself.

It's just a matter of knowing how to behave in front of younger and more impressionable human beings then it is having to use four letter words.

Decency, civility, whatever you want to call it, is not a matter of intelligence, but a matter of being respectful to parents and the minds of their kids.

Dumb?
If you can't wrap your mind around the thought police comment I feel bad for you.  However, to try and take a shot at me for being idiotic or dumb is a joke.  I'm not going to try and defend my intelligence to you because there is no need but I do want to point out that making comments such as this make you look more ignorant than those you are trying to put down.

The fag and gay comments are lost in a generation gap and those who are older or out of touch don't get the new meanings that are assigned to words by the younger generation. They are a put down and not necessarily an attack on another's sexual orientation.  Is it nice?  No.  Will it change? No.  So wash the sand out of your collective vagina's and deal with it, watch your own children and explain the difference between right and wrong, or force The Rev to ruin the site by censoring what real Angel fans feel.

I for one have had enough with the Pseudo intellectuals who hid behind clever screen names hoping to mask the shortcomings that are readily apparent in the real world.

Peace bitches!

What irritates me most
Is results-based analysis; i.e., every pitching move that doesn't work out is automatically the Stupidest Thing Ever and a Reason Scioscia Should Be Fired, when in fact all he's doing is bringing in Frankie for the 9th.

I'm more interesting in strategy discussions before a move, rather than rancid/bitchy relentless negative hindsight.

The answer is easy
  1. Allow anyone to curse as much as they want.
  2. Require that all posters use their real names.
  3. Optimize the comment threads for Google.

Agree and Disagree
I've only been a member here a short time and was a little bit surprised at the language thinking there must be alot of kids looking at this site since it is linked from the Angels official site. But then again it is language typical of excited and empassioned sports fans expressing their true raw emotions. That's the nature of sports fans all over the world. On the other hand it would seem odd to suppress something so natural to rooting for a team in an honest an raw way. If your kids were being threatened  physically that's one thing but these are only words. It's the internet deal with it. Your kids will see these words on myspace and facebook, hear them on YouTube, and any other chat site on the internet. Not to mention the rap music they are already or soon to be listening to. It's your job as a parent to not expose them to this material if you find it harmful to them or have a converstion as to why people use these words and why they should'nt. If you don't want to have your children see the F-bombs on the gameday blog don't let them read it. Have them watch the game on TV instead. If you attend a game at the stadium with your kids, are you going to convince everbody in the park to not curse just because your few little children are there. No, I did'nt think so. I don't think you have the right to ask the same thing here. I don't use curse words here and never will out of respect for the fact that I know there are alot of kids on this site, there has to be, but I would never try to censor anybody else for being their true, honest, excitable selves. Nobody uses the F-bomb in a true hateful, insulting way toward other members on this site, they use it to express emotion over the game and that's the difference.

This is a very intelligent and well thought out...
counterpoint to my point.

I agree that there is no way I could restrain 44,000 fans at a stadium from using foul language (great analogy).

And I agree that communication between parent and child is most vital for filtering out the evils of society and raising good human beings.

by the constant, needless pessimism.

If people would remember that even the very best teams lose 50-60 games a season, (and many of those by small margins) they might have a little more perspective about a failed bunt attempt or an errant throw.

Profanity filter add-on
The ProCon Latte Firefox add-on allows the rest of use to be ass-holes while protecting our youth from becoming more like us.

The software is simple and easy to use; The functionality is wonderful. You can ban porn sites and key words. making a custom shorter list of words is recommended if you want friendly surfing with the power of decent protection.

Excellent tool, and a must for anyone with kids. Spend a few minutes and your kids are good to go.

Cool guys, I am a well-rounded fellow and...
can sincerely appreciate everyone's input.  This is a learning experience for me as this is the first blog I have been involved in.  I thank you all for your opinions and share in your sincere passion for the Halos!

Man, what a night last night!  I can now say that I have seen in person BOTH the 10 RBI night and the 9 RBI night at the stadium.  Nice!!!!

Quit yer whinin' and START CHEERING!
