dissing GA

From the KLAW's chat today:

Jock Thompson, The OC: Keith, not that I disagree with you that Scioscia needs to find ABs for Willits, but with respect to Anderson, you obviously haven't checked the stats since the All-Star break. Among other things, Anderson is third in MLB RBI and completely healthy for the first time in four years.

Keith Law: Well, RBI are meaningless, so I'm not buying that argument. And I just saw the Angels for four games - Anderson's bat speed has slowed, he can't hit lefties at all, and he's limited in left. Trust me, there's no way they'll do anything to limit his time, but I think it's the rational move.

Star-divide

That ought to start some shite here.

Keith Law = Douche
A big FU to the A's and Red Sox....

by Crapper John MD on Aug 31, 2007 3:12 PM PDT   0 recs

Yes, RBIs are meaningless
because scoring runs is meaningless.

But let's not even mention the fact that, across the board, he's hitting lefties better than righties this year.

But what was that he said about him just seeing the Angels for four games?  Over Garret's last 4 games, he's 8-14 (.571) with 2 homers, 3 doubles, and 6 runs driven in.

Yawn, next topic please.

"RBI are meaningless" [sic]
sooo... we just leave everyone on base?

sooo... that 10 rbi performance the other night shouldn't have been on the front of the major sports sites?

I should be working right now...

um
GA is hitting .315/.342/.466 against lefties.

How does Keith Law still have a job?

He's hitting .291/.342/.506 since the ASB. Keith Law has no credibility. All he does is post misinformation and trash. I'm surprised that idiot still has a job.

GA
has been facing this crap his entire career. Hopefully, he will retire with another ring or two and have the last laugh.

R-B-I
the old stat-head line about RBI being meaningless appears again.

In a nutshell, RBI does measure the OPPORTUNITIES to drive in runs more than it measures some magical ability to hit at key moments (aka Clutch).

Garret Anderson slaughters fastballs and repeat pitches. This is his ability as a hitter. He can doink a curve and fight off a slider, but that is not why he is in the middle of the lineup. When nobody is on base, he sees a lot of these latter pitches and does not necessarily do much with them.

To call RBI meaningless is to throw out so much nuance of the game - that a pitcher will pitch to GA differently with men on base and Kotchman, Matthews, Kendrick following - this is indisputabloe - Garret will get pitches to drive and he does.

Great to see Halo Nation band together...
on this one!!

I love how some Krusty the Clown wanna-be starts talking out of the side of his neck.

I was listening to the Loose Cannons today and Hartman was already declaring the Angels the AL West champs and saying that GA was playing for his job -

Hello, there's still a month left and as Gooby (of all people) said, GA is healthy and happy - so he's being productive.

"And the Anaheim Angels are the Champions of Baseball!"

by Grichfan on Aug 31, 2007 4:05 PM PDT   0 recs

BULL-SHITE
GA is hitting for power more now than we've seen in a while. Sure, his fielding is Escaladelicious and he doesn't make it to balls he should, but his bat has made huge contributions to the team lately.

And judging from the way he looks at the plate and is swingin, I'm optimistic that he can continue at this level.

by yeswecan on Aug 31, 2007 4:10 PM PDT   0 recs

why
you guys are acting like Kieth law punted your miniature schnauzer off the 405 freeway. I agree that willits should not be DHing if hes in the lineup with GA

So far the guy has been called a douche, an abortion, a bitch, a jackass, a dipshit.

Wow, really compelling arguments. Well done, guys.

by LA Seitz on Aug 31, 2007 5:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah Seitz....
this is a worthless thread.

The crazy thing is that everything Keith Law is saying is true - to some degree - but people here see the last 100 AB's of GA as some new level of production as opposed to a really hot streak.

I'm glad he has had the hot streak, but I'd rather have Willits and his .390's OBP in the lineup everyday, especially with the emergence of Morales as a possible everyday DH for the remainder of the season....

by jimmuscomp on Aug 31, 2007 6:08 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Agree and disagree
Keith is essentially a scout, not the stat geek that people here make him out to be, which is why he was at the four games between the Sox and Angels, as opposed to settling for TV.  His eyes tell him GA can't hit lefties.  The numbers this year say something different, but last year he really struggled against lefties.  Then again, over his career, he's hit lefties pretty well.  I can't bag on a guy who writes what he sees.  All I can do is argue that I see something different.

GA has clearly been hot lately, and while half of me wants to believe that it represents a true return to form thanks to good health, the other half at least realizes that there's a possibility that it's a fluke.

So let's take a look at what he said:

1) His bat speed has slowed.
Honestly, I'm not qualified to judge this, and even if I were, I haven't been paying a lot of attention.  I'm happy with the homers, and I don't care if they've come on off-speed pitches or average fastballs.  But I will say this, if they have come on those pitches, GA could very well struggle down the stretch, because he may not see too many more.

2) He can't hit lefties at all:
Probably hyperbole due to the nature of the chat, but certainly wrong.  He can hit lefties, but he's probably not their best bet against them.  This year he's hit them well, but in limited time (fewer than 80 plate appearances).  Against Boston, the only lefty he faced was Okajima, and he went 1-2 off of him.  So Law apparently sees something (or thinks he does), but doesn't elaborate on this in chat.  If this had been posted Tuesday, I might be able to tell you what he was getting at*.

3) He's limited in left field:
Can anyone here really argue this, especially with Willits as an option?

I disagree that the lineup should regularly have Kendry at DH, Willits in left, and GA on the bench.  But what he says isn't complete bullshit.  And I can guarantee everyone here, he doesn't hate the Angels, except when they beat the Yankees.

*About half way through the chat, he took a question about where to eat in Chicago, to which he responded:
Best bets were Lou Mitchell's for breakfast, Frontera for lunch, and La Creperie for dinner (hat tip to Shredder).
As some of you know, Shredder is me.  We've been on friendly terms for a few years now, though this was the first time we'd met in person.  So in the interest of full disclosure, I've met the guy, and he's not a douche.

Cupie, on the other hand... :)

by LA Seitz on Aug 31, 2007 6:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice
I knew that comment would stir up a sheetstorm.

Bottom line is in enough AB's GA would hit lefties about 10% worse than righties.

I can believe GA's bat speed has slowed, but he guesses a lot, and when he guesses right he can hit ANY pitch.

GA is not so great in the OF, but Vlad is really getting to be a problem out there.

All these OF/DH/1B we have now.  Soon Kotch will be 100% and Rivera will be back.  This will take a masterful job by Scioscia to get them all in there.  If Willits is 100%, he can't be the guy at DH.

My thoughts are all of them should be rested regularly (maybe 2 days a week) except Vlad if he is 100%.  Believe it or not I think GA should only be 4th in line to be DH behind Rivera, Vlad, and Cowbell.  When GA plays LF is fine, and he should rest versus LHP only since we have so many righties in the mix.

by elricsi on Aug 31, 2007 8:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

For what it's worth
I asked him about hitting lefties, and bat speed.  Keith responded that:
  1. GA has been cheating badly on fastballs, and it's affected, by a large margin, his ability to hit change ups from right handed pitchers because he's so far out in front;
  2. Three of the last four years GA has been pretty bad against lefties*, and one year splits (especially one incomplete year) are too small to make real judgments.  Guys don't suddenly learn to hit lefties at 36.
*Note that one of those years, 2005, he hit lefties well for average, but with zero power.  One XBH per 15 ABs.  He's about 1 XBH per 10 at bats for his career, and 1/12 for his career vs lefties.  The aggregate for those four years is not good.

The first point is observational, the second is more or less verifiable by the numbers.  Take from that what you will.

100 at-bats?
Try all 251 plate appearances since his June 3rd return from the disabled list, at which point he said he was healthy again.  In that 62 game stretch, more than half of his entire season (and certainly enough plate appearances to be considered about half of an entire season), he's .297/.339/.509 with 10 homers, 48RBIs, and one K every 8 at-bats.  That's a hell of a long term hot streak.

You're right, I think
Those skills you mention probably give GA a couple extra RBI over the course of a season versus a player with otherwise identical abilities.

So, no, RBI is not a COMPLETELY meaningless stat.  Just mostly meaningless.

Disclaimer: This is not a defense of Keith Law.

by Dogman on Aug 31, 2007 4:50 PM PDT   0 recs

It's as meaningless as wins for a pitcher.

by Dogman on Aug 31, 2007 4:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't completely agree here Rev.....,,,
G.A. can (and has) done alot more than "fight off" sliders. If a pithcer makes a mistake with a slider or curve G.A. CAN (and has) driven these pitches a long way.

You are correct that he prefers the fastball, but he can hit the other stuff as well...Just not as consistently as he hits the fastball. But I think this is true for just about every hitter in the world......

Sometimes Garret hits the curves and sliders even when they are not
mistake pitches.. I seem to recall a huge 3run bomb he hit off Randy Johnson in Game 3 of the 2005 ALDS. That pitch was a slider down and away with good movement, and Garret went out and pulled it over the right-center field fence. Not bad if you ask me...

by Jack Frost on Aug 31, 2007 5:25 PM PDT   0 recs

RBIs measure no such thing
It's like looking at hits in the absence of at-bats. And GA's RISP average, while improving, is still terrible (.245/.296/.427).
Hoping Ervin Santana turns it around in Salt Lake. Go, Ervin!

the last i checked...
you win a baseball game by scoring more RUNS than your opponent and driving those runs is the most common way to do it. it drives me crazy that he can say that about a run producer producing runs and some other lick will rail on us about how we manufacture runs without the long ball.
