Around SBN: Africa Cup Of Nations Semifinal: Black Stars Ripe For Upset?

An asterisk in Anaheim

While having a conversation with a Giants fan concerning the validity of the home run record, he said that Bonds along with A-Rod were predicted by a local sports talk show to be members of the Angels next year, (don't ask me what show or who it was, this is second hand).  It got me thinking, how would Angel fans react to hearing, "Now batting for the Angels, Designated Hitter, Barry Bonds," over the Big-A PA system.

No way
Consider Arte's reaction to the GMJ-HGH non-statement and kiss any notion of Bonds or Giambi or Sheffiled or Neifi Perez, et al...

And Arte already sent a volley that at $30 milion, A-Rod is too too expensive.

I agree
W/ Rev's analysis....but I would take him in a heartbeat.

On a semi-related point, I was at the Yankee/Sox game on Thursday afternoon w/ my Angel hat and I had several people stop me to say that ARod will wind up an Angel.  There's a lot of speculation with that, I think, because of Cashman's ultimatum that if he opts out, the Yankees are out of the bidding (can anybody smell bluff?).  My guess is that Bonds goes elsewhere and Arod goes nowhere

GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can

I think
Arte was playing one up on Boras to try to get him to come down. I still suspect ARod at 3B (not SS) next year.

Barry Rules won't fly in Anaheim
I don't care much about the steroid allegations (which really are allegations -- "Game of Shadows" is not nearly as convincing as it's made out to be); but
  1. Arte cares about that stuff, and perhaps more importantly,
  2. No way in HELL is some player going to waltz into Year 9 of an organizational culture and start imposing a bunch of barcalounger, me-first bullshit.
I'd love Barry's production out of the DH spot, but that's a cost we shouldn't (and never will) pay.

Off Topic
But forget Game of Shadows; one need look no further than Bonds' own sworn grand jury testimony.  He admitted using steroids; his excuse was that he didn't know they were steroids (The Clear and The Cream).

Barry = no chance
However, I think A-Rod's future depends heavily on what happens in the post-season.  Should the Spanks make it to October and he lays another egg and/or they lose, I can only imagine the "delight" surrounding New York will trigger an organizational implosion from top to bottom including A-Rod.

This, coupled with a post-season offensive collapse (I knock on all things wood as I type this) on the part of the Halos, could potentially exert enough pressure to add the proverbial big bat.

I, for one, think adding A-Rod at $30 million would be an enormous mistake and that kind of money could be used towards multiple players, whether for re-upping Vlad and/or adding another piece or two to the pie...

by Big Easy Halofan on Sep 3, 2007 12:18 PM PDT reply actions

problem is
most people think a-rod is that missing piece to the pie. and it's hard not to disagree. along with him comes the protection for vlad and the power we needed.

i'm just worried about what happens when you've got all that money tied around a-rod. how do you cement the youth we have to long term and fairly decent contracts, specially k-rod. we gotta keep k-rod.

"it's mind-bottling."

by retrohalo on Sep 3, 2007 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't forget
Texas also gets salary relief if that contract is torn up, to the tune of 30.3 million they don't have to pay over the final three years of his contract [1].

So not only would we essentially be giving Texas 10mil/year just to sign A-Rod, but we'd also be taking it away from signing future stars (Kendrick, Kotchman, Weaver), and disabling us from resigning biggies like Vladdy, Lackey, KRod, Escy, etc.

by shiftyeyedgoat on Sep 3, 2007 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

If he opts out, Texas gets it no matter what
So that doesn't matter if we sign him or not.

And we're not taking that money "away" from future signings, necessarily. We've got $25 million-plus coming off the books after 2007, and again after 2008, with cheap replacements ready to fill the roster & lineup slots.

i don't get why some people still want bonds.
the dude's like 45 now, what production would he bring? he's getting slower, older, and, with the crack down of roids, he's not gonna get a sudden lift any time soon. why pay 8+ mil for an aging headcase?

I'd love to have A-Rod.
But I'm pretty sure that A-Rod will head to the NL, more than likely the Giants or the Cubs.  And he'll return to his original position of shortstop.

The Cubs are building up a powerful roster that is very reminiscent of the Yankees from early in the decade.

And in San Fransisco they are going to need to replace Bonds.  A-Rod would bring a lot of CROSS-OVER appeal to the Giants.

by Jay Cal on Sep 4, 2007 8:30 AM PDT reply actions

i highly doubt a-rod would go to the giants
or the cubs, for that matter. it's either going to be he stays, heads over to the bahston redsux, or we get him. of course, i could look incredibly stupid when he skips his ass over to chicago but nobody's gonna remember this, anyways.

The Giants
They have to continue to pay for their stadium and i really doubt they are going to put their entire payroll into two players (ARod and Zito).  Furthermore they need to revamp the entire offense.

Also I doubt A Rod changes leagues and goes to a pitching park at this point.

I'm giving Figgins a big F U. Seattle isn't winning 90. I am not worried.

Two Words....
That explain why Barry won't come to Anaheim.

Jose Guillen

The organization has proven it won't take me-first clubhouse primadonnas.

On the other hand, I'd love to see A-Rod playing third.
