D-Mac to the Marlins

It's official, per rotoworld... no dollar amount (probably near-minimum), but it's a 1-year deal.  He'll be fighting Jose Castillo and Jorge Cantu for 3rd base.

I sure was hoping he'd hold out and get invited to Spring Training.

D-Mac, sorry to see you go.  Good luck at your new home.  Hope you hit those 30 HR's someday.

Sorry to see him go, if his injuries ever go away the guy is gonna be a superstar.  I still remember the first time I saw him go deep in Angel Stadium (and every time there after) only other player who could wow me like that was Vlad, and maybe Glaus.

He won't come back to haunt us, as this was a given that he was not in the long term plans but he will come back to haunt us in that he will be a freak at some point.

happy trails D-Mac you were a good one and may you become the franchise in Florida, and who knows maybe you'll come back as a big ticket free agent at some point, I know I wouldn't mind watching you launch some more home runs.

D-Mac
He never would have gotten a shot at third.

For some reason third belongs to Figgy.

Marlins Skipper on DMac: "Versatility"
This had me scratching my head...

From the ticker:
"I look forward to getting Dallas into camp and having some competition over at third base," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "He's a lefthanded hitter that has shown good offensive numbers and he has some versatility in where he could play."

Where else are they going to try him out besides 3B?  I'd hate to see him trying to run around out in CF.  :O

Quit yer whinin' and START CHEERING!

They probably meant 1B.
....and Dallas was mentioned as a corner outfielder in a lot of prognoses of his eventual position.....especially LF.

I recall an article reporting how Dallas mentioned to Scioscia that "maybe I can play OF" after he had been told by one of his doctors that it might help alleviate some of the pressure on his back if he played OF instead of 3B.  The article implied that Scioscia was fairly indignant in responding, saying that they (the Angels) had him penciled in  for infield.

I'm kinda sad that he's not with the Angels anymore, but glad he has another opportunity.

WHY OH WHY
Why were the Angels so accomodating to Steve Finley after his bullshit injury and so negative toward D-Mac over his?

Pisses me off...

by Rev Halofan on Jan 31, 2008 5:23 PM PST reply actions

I hope you hit 40 Dallas !!!
Stoneman knew he blew it by letting Troy go in the first place and signing Finly ......... and unfortunately Dallas didn't bail him out due to some untimely injuries. That sure wasn't the fault of Dallas, would it have been so bad to invite him to Spring training 2008 as a non-roster invitee and give Figgy some competition and at least show some alligiance and loyalty to a home grown player. Shame on us !!!! Good luck Dallas, show management they made a very poor and insensitive decision.

BECAUSE
Finley was over 35 and earned the respect (sarcasm).  Plus, its not like we even needed a power hitting, lefty, thirdbaseman (more sarcasm).

This has to be one of the clubs worst decisions since signing Finley and passing on Beltran (who is now making less per year than Hunter).

oh yeah and wilkerson signed with the m's

Good for D-Mac.
For a team that claims to need "power bats" they managed to let one walk away for no good reason.  The money - about $1 million - shouldn't have been an issue for a team with a budget north of $115 million.

Best case scenario - he is an above-average major league hitter - especially in a platoon vs. RH pitching.

Worst case scenario - he is unable to play the field and can't crack the lineup as a DH and they cut him during ST and pay 25% of his salary.

Just a move that makes me scratch my head....

Hope he CRUSHES in the NL.

Go get 'em D-Mac.

Could Dallas
out-homer Cabrera this year?

That's doubtful, but not unthinkable.  I hope Dallas gets healthy, stays healthy, and has a solid career.  I believe he is perfectly capable of hitting .250 with 30-35 HR's, IF he can stay on the field, AND his manager gives him a chance to play.

Good luck Dallas...

Let's not get crazy
but D-Mac is worth a shot.  Is he a sure bet?  Absolutely not, but again, worth a shot.

Cabrera will out everything him this year.  Don't be foolish.  But, the Halos should have held on to him and let him prove he was healthy or done - they could have done that in spring training and if they release him by a certain date they only pay 25% of the salary....

Seemed like a reasonable risk to me...

by jimmuscomp on Feb 1, 2008 9:35 AM PST up reply actions

He got $425K and.....
the possibility of playing for the Marlins or in their minors.

Timing is everything.  I blame Boras more than anyone else.

I agree professor
and wumbug

I especially like your point about the "25% of salary" issue.  I also agree that Cabrera will/should out everything Dallas this year, but it wouldn't shock me to see D-Mac with 30 HR's in the NL.

(sigh)

Dumbfounded
i never was able to figure this one out...Dallas would cost us next to nothing next year, we have stuck by him for years with his injuries and then we just cut bait. Not only do we cut bait, but we cut bait when we are uncertain and looking for a power hitting third baseman...What the fuck (rack me for my f-bomb on the first of the month)!!!

He is a calculated risk, and one that should have been taken. Even if his back collapses in ST is not a huge loss...The upside is you get a power hitting left handed bat to start at 3b or come off the bench...The very least it pushes Figgy a bit in the spring...

Dont like it one but!

three and out....Can we look for that big bat now?

by P237 on Feb 1, 2008 10:31 AM PST reply actions

HA HA
I loved McPherson's potential coming up and actually thought he had a pretty good bat. It was a shame he could not stay on the field. I think the Angels would have given him a shot, but the problem is he hasn't played much in a year or so and perhaps he will never make an impact just because the injuries have piled up for him.

People are whining like the team let Brandon Wood go or something after his monster season in Rancho in 2005. Yeah, I hope McPherson hits 40 home runs in Florida as an FU to the Angels front office, but I'm not even sure if he can make the Florida Marlins' opening day roster.

by Halos2002 on Feb 2, 2008 3:20 AM PST reply actions

Wood vs. McPherson
I'd take McPherson over Wood any day.  McPherson is a proven big league hitter who has had injury problems.  Wood has yet to prove that he can hit big league pitching.

by akathelorax @ Halos Heaven on Feb 2, 2008 12:19 PM PST up reply actions

A proven big league hitter?
I'm pretty sure I can hit an off speed pitch as well as he could. A major league career OPS of 755, in 360 AB, over 3 seasons doesn't prove anything to me.

I'll take a 755 OPS
any day from a rookie (which he essentially was every year because of the injuries).  That sure as heck beats Woods 425 OPS.

by akathelorax @ Halos Heaven on Feb 2, 2008 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

He must be washed up
Because I agree with everybody that, on paper, it would have been a no-risk all up-side deal to keep him.

You could have put bucket outside the stadium and called it the D-Mac Fund.  Fan donations would've paid his salary because everybody wants to see how it ends. Either way.

My take on D-Mac
Maybe i'm stupid, ill informed,(and those that know me would not argue otherwise) but I fail to see, how not having him back is tantamount to letting Mike Schmidt go, yes he had tremendous upside, so did Ramon Ortiz, Seth Etherton and Todd Greene. I realize he dealt with many injuries over the course of his Halos tenure, but that in and of itself, should raise a red flag. A young and gifted 3rd basemen, suffers from chronic back ailments, and neverending injuries. There are many, many, young athletes, from various sports that see their careers cut short, due to injuries, unfortunately for Dallas, I feel he may be in that group. Let the debat, and hate begin.

by halofolife on Feb 3, 2008 12:08 AM PST reply actions

I don't think he is a young
Mike Schmidt.  I just think that he was an alternative worth looking at considering the Halos have a hole at 3B and he has shown - in small stretches - that he can crush.

Definitely worth throwing $425,000 at, in my opinion.

by jimmuscomp on Feb 3, 2008 10:21 AM PST up reply actions

Inconsistant philosophy
We sign tons of OFs partially because injuries are inevitable and we can therefore maintain good production in the outfield, but we have a gaping hole at 3rd (where any power production is an upgrade) and we cut bait on a cheap bet.

That's why I think, unfortunately, he's finished. And yes, it happens all the time. Also why everybody still  wants to see him thrive elsewhere. There's really not much debate, most fans just wanted to see "what if".

I would have offered league minimum, with a bunch of performance incentives.
