Angels WHAT TO DO: John Lackey
The Angels have a $9 million option for 2009 for John Lackey. Should they pick up this option? Should they tear it up and renegotiate more years for John to stay in L.A. of Anaheim now?

Lackey
I think getting Lackey resigned long-term is priority 1B right now. If we don’t have offense it doesn’t matter how great the pitching staff is as shown in the last couple playoff series.
I love Big John he is definitely a keeper. His game 4 performance should have brought the Angels back home to game 5 if only good HK would have showed up.

Whatever It Takes To Keep Him...
Do it. He’s the anchor of this pitching staff. I think Santana’s great but needs someone else to be the big dog on this staff to do his best, and he’s an example of how to lead a pitching staff. I suppose you could jsut pick up the option, but I’d hope the Angels would renegotiate for at least another 3-4 years.

An extention would be great
The Angels need to keep him. NEED TO.
One thing I love about this team is that there are really no big egos, yet they still manage to produce and be an amazing team.
The time is out of joint; oh cursed spite, that ever I was born to set it right.

I wonder how much he'll want
The contract Sabathia signs is going to be huge for Lackey. With the way FA pitching has been going, he’s going to want 5 or 6 years at least $15 million per. That’s a lot of cash for one pitcher. I think Lackey will be good for awhile, but he’s already lost some of his fastball and his peripherals took a hit last year.
With Santana, Saunders, and Weaver, that’s a decent 1-2-3 right there, with Adenhart hopefully figuring in as well. I like John, but I’m just not sure about a huge extension.
Pick up his option this year and see what he wants. If you’re going to sign him to an extension, do it now, before Sabathia breaks someone’s checkbook.

Extend
say, 6 years (including 2009, so in effect a five-year extension), maybe $70 million.
by jjackflash on Oct 10, 2008 8:43 AM PDT 0 recs
Wishful thinking
If Lackey agrees to that, do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, Jon Garland, a number 3 starter in his best year, just got done with a roughly $10 million a year contract. The Angels paid Bartolo $13 million a year in a contract signed 4 years ago.
I just don’t see Lackey taking less than $14 million, and probably $15 million per.

True
I forgot that Johan Santana got 6 years, at $137.5 million. Lackey’s not going to get quite that much, but I guess $105 for six years is probably not out of the question. That’s about $17.5 million per.

Ahhh Hell
Decisions Decisions Decisions.
Just sign everyone, raise than ticket prices and consession prices to pay for their salaries. Might as well just get it over with. It’s not like prices aren’t going up every damn year anyways. Eventually (which is practically happening now) the die-hard fan with or without a family can hardly afford to go to a game, unless you’re not afraid of heights and getting a nose bleed.
Wait, I have an idea ! We can sell seats on the field level and RF Pavilion MVP by thirds of an game (3innings at a time) to allow the “Common Fan” the opportunity to view some of the game.

Agree. I don't think money is the issue to sway him with right now.
I don’t think he likes the world thinking Lester outpitched him in the playoffs. If you consider that Lackey had to face Red Sux hitters while Lester got to face Angel hitters, the world should be a bit more impressed with Lackey that it is right now.
Another year of this shit and Lackey will be wearing pinstipes in 2010.

Lackey got outpitched in game 1. When you have a lead, and lose it on a 2 run homer, you got outpitched.
Game 4, they were even, but I believe Lester was on his way to a complete game shutout. Lackey was going to gave up 1, Howie’s bobble cost him another, unless you think they were going to turn an impossible dp with Ellsbury running.

That misses the point I made about the hitters each had to face.
Lester faced hitters who are far easier to get out than hitters Lackey had to face.

Guess k-rod and Ervin should get a pass too
They had to face some tough hitters too.
I supposed Dice K didn’t outpitch Shields tonight either, those Rays just can’t hit the ball, and the Red Sox can.

yeah seriously
what a ridiculous thing to say. Lack is such a competitor and as he said in the press conference after game one…“its hard to expect a pitcher to not make one mistake during an entire ball game…”(or something to that effect.) Lack’s performances were clutch…he just didnt get the support. We can talk about Lester outpitching him but really??? Did he really OUTpitch him? If Lester did better it was a fraction better…
Layoff Q…Lack threw two awesome games…for you to deny that is ridiculous.

Get Offense to Sign Him
John has said that he needs the Angels to improve the offense before he thinks about resigning. So I think you pick up his option and try and sign as many good position players as you need. Stay away from Sabathia!!!! Then this year try and work out a long term deal with Lackey.

Big John is the Mark Teixeira of the pitching staff. we need Tex as the future centerpiece of our offense, and Lackey NEEDS to be the centerpiece of this pitching staff, no questions asked.

Sounds about right. I’d be reluctant to give any more years than that, unless they were team/mutual option years.

Barring any better options
in-house or in free agency the next couple of years I think you gotta tear up the option and come up with some kind of 5 year deal. You’d get Lackey from ages 30-34, hopefully most of them prime years and by the end of it hopefully Santana and Saunders can take over as the lead dogs. BUT if you’re Lackey, no matter if Tex is here or whatever the Angels tell you about upgrading the offense, this close to free agency you might just want the Angels to pick up the option then come back next year breathing fire, in contract-year overdrive to earn a better deal since it might be your best chance at getting it.

if he'll talk extension, do it this winter...
…5/75 tops though. If not, exercise the option, hope for less bloody results next year, and re-sign him then, although it will likely cost more depending on the type of year he has.
This assumes we don’t sign CC. I would imagine some weird chemistry (read: not good) between Big John the leader, and a superstar like CC.

Extend but...
A couple things to take note. Lack was injured early on. Nothing too serious but should be noted. Second, he gave up a lot of long ball this season. I dont have the stats but I am pretty sure more than he ever has.
That being said, I still think we should definitely re-sign him. Despite these few drawbacks from this season, the guy started off amazing and still continued to dominate for the most part. Plus, I remember on more than one occasion him going to the distance and getting very little run support and ended up with an Loss when his performance was definitely WIN material.
I have total confidence that Lack will continue to dominate for years to come. We should remember the drawbacks of this season though and I dont think it would be totally unwise to worry at least a tiny bit about those things continuing to plague him in the next few years when determining what we re-sign him for. However, as I stated early…Lack is all Halo…lets keep it that way.

forget that option, negotiate an extension this winter
4/60. He’s worth it. He gave a little more long ball this year, but hes been great since he’s been here. I’d rather not see Lackey on the bump at the Big A in an away jersey because he’s definitely one of those guys you just dont wanna face.

He is the same every year. A top 1-10 #1. Not easy to come by. AND I think he wants to be here. Should save us some money if he does.

Off Season
Priorities (in order of importance)
1. Tie Up Teixeria (may be wrong spelling but you know what I mean)…We need his bat and his glove otherwise we pi**ed away Kotchman
2. Sign Lackey….He is a proven winner and he is our ace.
3. Bye bye Frankie….Other than 2002..when has Frankie REALLY come up big for us?? Last year Manny Rameriez..this year the “dreaded” JD Drew.
4. Package Shield and Abyar in a trade for a consistent “decent” hitting shortstop (we should have never gotten rid of Cabrerra OR Eck)
Shields since he signed his long term contract hasn’t delieverd. Case in point…2 runs in the top of the 9th against Boston this year…made the score 4 to 1 and put the game out of reach….Not to mention losing the game in the bottom of the 9th in Game 4. Abyar is not the shortstop or the “dial a glove” of our future.
5, Take care of Vlady….because he’s Vlady….PERIOD!!!
6. Hurts to say this but Bye Bye Garret…..it’s just time…use his moeny to secure Teixeria or maybe go get a power hitting third baseman. FIGGY is a GOD….most UNDERRATED player in MLB…move him to left field.
7, Have Gary Matthews valet parking cars..when did he change his name to Andru Jones.
8. Garland?? Who knows…
9. Arrendondo…NEW CLOSER…..
let me know what you think.
GO HALOS!!!

i dont think he was ever really that good. those gold gloves dont really mean anything. he was always an overrated center fielder, and someone was going to get taken to town when they signed him; it just happened to be the dodgers.
id say the similarities are pretty apt.

Huh?
I don’t understand your shortstop comment. Cabrera was not any better than either Aybar or Izturis this year. Garland was far more valuable to the club than O.C. would have been throughout the season. The Angels have six shortstops already; the absolute last thing they need is a seventh (or a new sixth, since you advocate trading Aybar). As for getting rid of Eckstein, that’s why they got Cabrera in the 1st place, and he was better than Eckstein for those three years.

with regards to lackey
I think definitely need him back next year he still had a fantastic year even after missing the better part of two months! And he was a beast in the playoffs… if i am tony r. the first thing i do the next time i have lunch with arte is to liquify his stock market portfolio (which is pretty much guaranteed to be doing but losing him money right now) and make sure we have enough money to sign tex and lackey to whatever they need. these guys are the future of our veterans. We have always been a team filled with young talent (case and point 2002) but without wise veterans in the dugout they are sure to collapse. Tex and John will provide that solid veteran presence for years to come (i know tex is still young but soon enough he will be the core of this team).
